This jointly authored book extends understanding of the use of sport to address global development agendas by offering an important departure from prevailing theoretical and methodological approaches in the field. Drawing on nearly a decade of wide-ranging multidisciplinary research undertaken with young people and adults living and working in urban communities in Zambia, the book presents a localised account that locates sport for development in historical, political, economic and social context. A key feature of the book is its detailed examination of the lives, experiences and responses of young people involved in sport for development activities, drawn from their own accounts. The book's unique approach and content will be highly relevant to academic researchers and post-graduate students studying sport and development in across many different contexts.

The Stanley Creek community, named for a gold prospector, began in the mid-1700s as one of the earliest settlements in Gaston County. Gold was mined in the area until the California Gold Rush. Among the prominent people visiting the area was André Michaux, botanist and adventurer, who discovered the tree he named Magnolia macrophylla. In 1860, the Wilmington, Charlotte & Rutherford Railroad came through the area on land owned by the Brevard family. Brevard's train depot was the primary rallying point for soldiers leaving for the Civil War and for sending supplies to troops. Around the end of the 1890s, Stanley Creek Cotton Mills was organized, beginning the textile era, which continued until 2000. Two Stanley men patented a dyeing machine, and Gaston County Dyeing Machine Company was born. Many of Stanley's men went to fight in the nation's wars, some losing their lives. Several athletes went on to major-league baseball, and a nationally recognized sculptor lived in Stanley.
Social exclusion is one of the most pressing challenges in post-industrial societies, encompassing economic, social, cultural and political dimensions. This important new book critically examines the relationship between sport and social exclusion, from global and cross-cultural perspectives. The book analyses sport and social exclusion by focusing on three key questions: How does social exclusion affect participation in sport? How is social exclusion (re)produced, experienced, resisted, and managed in sport? How is sport used to combat social exclusion and promote social inclusion in other life domains? To answer these questions, the authors discuss and critically reflect on existing knowledge and in-depth case studies from Europe, Australasia, Africa and Latin America. In the first half of the twentieth century, many of Toronto's immigrant Jews eked out a living in the needle-trade sweatshops of Spadina Avenue. In response to their expliotation on the shop floor, immigrant Jewish garment workers built one of the most advanced sections of the Canadian and American labour movements. Much more than a collective bargaining agency, Toronto's Jewish labour movement had a distinctly socialist orientation and grew out of a vibrant Jewish working-class culture. Ruth Frager examines the development of this unique movement, its sources of strength, and its limitations, focusing particularly on the complex interplay of class, ethnic, and gender interests and identities in the history of the movement. She examines the relationships between Jewish workers and Jewish manufacturers as well as relations between Jewish and non-Jewish workers and male and female workers in the city's clothing industry. In its prime, Toronto's Jewish labour movement struggled not only to improve hard sweatshop condistions but also to bring about a fundamental socialist transformation. It was an uphill battle. Drastic economic downturns, hard employer offensives, and state repressions all worked against unionists' workplace demands. Ethnic, gender, and ideological divisions weakened the movement and were manipulated by employers and their allies. Drawing on her knowledge of Yiddish, Frager has been able to gain access to original records that shed new light on an important chapter in Canadian ethnic, labour, and women's history.

The primary goal of this text is to support social work students in HBSE 1 courses to develop a conceptual framework for understanding and meeting the challenges they will likely encounter in 21st century practice. Through contemporary scholarship in human development, ecology, and systems theory, we build on social work's classic bio-psycho-social-spiritual framework. Our interdisciplinary, developmental, ecological-systems framework addresses the ways in which human beings shape, and are shaped within, complex and dynamic national and international contexts across the lifespan. We attempt to establish a bridge between undergraduate courses in the social, behavioral and biological sciences; and social work practice courses. We begin by establishing a framework for understanding human behavior in the social environment through chapters providing an historical overview of the interdisciplinary roots of the developmental-ecological systems framework, the brain and development, and the role of empirical evidence on social work practice.
