The activities and teaching strategies in Writing for the Real World will help students to realize the importance of writing. Personal writing activities emphasize writing as a source of lifelong learning and pleasure through diary and journalentries, autobiographies, personal letters, and illustrated stories and poems. School writing activities give them practice in taking notes, responding to readings, writing in specific content areas, completing research papers, answering questions onessay tests, and writing timed essays for assessment. Workplace writing activities give students experience in the kind of writing they may be required to do in the workplace. The focus of Research Writing Across the Curriculum is to teach middle years students the entire research process. This certainly includes a review of current literature, but also teaches students how to test their own hunch from this review of secondary sources. Students learn how to conduct their own research using models across the curriculum. Students will gain valuable skills for the kind of writing that they will need and use later in life.
