Following a description of the physical and biological characterization of the four North American deserts together with the primary adaptations of plants to environmental stress, the authors go on to present case studies of key species. They provide an up-to-date and comprehensive review of the major patterns of adaptation in desert plants, with one chapter devoted to several important exotic plants that have invaded these deserts. The whole is rounded off with a synthesis of the resource requirements of desert plants and how they may respond to global climate change.

A new and 50% enlarged, entertaining, but fundamentally serious selection of the most rewarding places to visit the most visited and beloved country in the world. Places described have gone from 101 to 150 in this edition. Sicily, Calabria and Apulia are the subjects of greater focus. Towns (additions include Bergamo, Pesaro, Cremona and Todi), villages, museums and individual monuments are discussed, characterised and described. A guide book in its own right, but above all a thoughtful, opinionated and supremely well-informed guide, supplement and corrective to conventional guides. Note this is not a guide to hotels, restaurants and other amenities.
This collection of current, thought-provoking articles, written by leading Canadian and international criminologists, highlights the range and significance of research on the causes and prevention of youth crime.
This fourth volume in the comprehensive series “fills a gap in the existing narrative” of WWII’s Mediterranean air war (Journal of Military History). The fourth volume in this momentous series commences with the attacks on the Italian island fortress of Pantellaria, which led to its surrender and occupation achieved almost by air attack alone. The account continues with the ultimately successful, but at times very hard fought, invasions of Sicily and southern Italy as burgeoning Allied air power, now with full US involvement, increasingly dominated the skies overhead. The successive occupations of Sardinia and Corsica are also covered in detail. This is essentially the story of the tactical air forces up to the point when Rome was occupied, just at the same time as the Normandy landings were occurring in northwest France. With regards to the long-range tactical role of the Allied heavy bombers, only the period from May to October is examined, while they remained based in North Africa, with the narrative continuing in a future volume. This volume also delves into the story of “the soldiers’ air force.” Frequently overshadowed by more immediate newsworthy events elsewhere, the soldiers’ struggle was often of an equally Homeric nature. “No future publication on the Mediterranean air war will be credible without use of this series.” —Air Power History
