This volume continues the publication of Professor Elton's collected papers on topics in the history of Tudor and Stuart England. All appeared between 1973 and 1981. As before, they are reprinted exactly as originally published, with corrections and additions in footnotes. They include the author's four presidential addresses to the Royal Historical Society and bring together his preliminary findings in the history of Parliament and its records. Several of them, which appeared in various collections and Festschriften, have been difficult to find, and some are taken from locations in Germany and the United States unfamiliar to English readers. The eight lengthy reviews here republished examine some of the major questions in the history of the age and throw light on the principles of investigation which underlie the author's own research.

The fix was the immediate removal of Konik as the failed director at theSalisburyVAand recycling him as our new director in the summer of 1996. . On Tuesday April 14th, 1998, an E-Mail was disseminated with following quotation: Weak leadership at the York VA Medical Center has prompted changes in the hospitals administration staff, with hospital Director Gene Konik reportedly asking for reassignment, VA officials said. Mr. Dandridge began to initiate his long-term plan for integratingMurfreesboroandNashvilleVA.One of his famous quotations was: Practice, practice makes perfect. Another of his public quotations was: Having theNashvilleVAsurgical residents perform the surgery would provide world-class surgery to the area veterans. . In the last five years, York has seen four different directors. Gordons office has been bombarded with complaints from ailing veterans and their families about lack luster care. Those whove died as a result of the administrative and service changes cant complain anymore. Current York VA Director David Pennington has never spoken to the press about anything, but did send a memo to the medical staff warning them to get online or get out! Our last crop of veterans is dying because of VA medical mismanagement, and our next batch is being loaded onto airplanes to fly back to an uncertain future. Mr. Sullivan, a gulf War I vet and VA project manager stated: This administration is so absolutely corrupt, incompetent and malevolent; it pales anything that came before it. Why is our economy tanking? The war, the war, the war.

Using a wide range of archival and written sources, Rudi Matthee considers the economic, social and political networks established between Iran, its neighbours and the world at large, through the prism of the late Safavid silk trade. In so doing, he demonstrates how silk, a resource crucial to state revenue and the only commodity to span Iran's entire economic activity, was integral to aspects of late Safavid society, including its approach to commerce, export routes and, importantly, to the political and economic problems which contributed to its collapse in the early 1700s. In a challenge to traditional scholarship, the author argues that despite the introduction of a maritime, western-dominated channel, Iran's traditional land-based silk export continued to expand right up to the end of the seventeenth century. The book makes a major theoretical contribution to the debates on the social and economic history of the pre-modern world.
