Roy Masters, in his delightfully shocking book "Eat No Evil," quickly dispels all of the myths surrounding our fascination with food. Rather than offer the public another health food diet, he bypasses the mumbo jumbo of the experts and strikes straight to the heart of the matter, unearthing for the first time the hidden cause of our cravings. If you had been born, say, two thousand years ago, you wouldn't need this book. You would be sustaining yourself naturally by eating all the right foods. But, alas, you were born in the twentieth century, as if in a cage, a bleak environment of steel and concrete and supermarket-processed food. Need I say more about the devitalized, bran-stripped junk you are eating? So now it behooves you to thread your way back through the maze of food traumas and conditioning to discover what God intended you to do with the natural bounty he provided. Food is to the intestines what truth is to the spirit. In both cases, we must keep a clean house. The problem is that a wrong person cannot possibly eat right food. You will see that the primary emphasis is on the spiritual weaknesses that led you into temptation in the first place. Bear in mind that you must get right to eat right.
An overview of the evolution of Australian sport during the 20th Century, Higher Richer Sleazier is a lament for the innocence and good sportsmanship of a former time. In today's Winning-Is-Everything world what has sport - and we as viewers and society as a whole - lost as a result? In the Australian Dreamtime, sports stars were inspired amateurs, filled to overflowing with the glorious Olympic dreams of Baron de Coubertin. Guys who had begun by banging a golf ball with a stump against a water tank and just got better and better at it; golden girls who ran and swam gloriously before settling down as wives and mothers. What would happen today if a modern athlete, sponsored to the hilt and laden with logos, stopped a world-record-setting run to lend a hand to a fallen comrade, as John Landy did with Ron Clarke in 1956? Would he become a national hero, as Landy did, or would he now be considered a bit suss, 'holier-than-thou' and not quite right, the way much of the media portrayed Adam Gilchrist when he walked? Today it's a cut-throat world of big money, poisonous rivalries, sledging and the temptation to dabble in performance-enhancing drugs. Aussie sports fans love winners; but they still value sportsmanship. In a timely polemic, the eloquent Roy Masters explores how we have come to this and how we might be able to juggle the inherent inconsistencies in our vision of sport in the 21st Century.
When do the football codes burn brightest? When the fireflies of controversy dance around them. They say best men are moulded out of faults, and, for the most, become much more the better, for being a little bad. Shakespeare, Measure for Measure Roy Masters examines the sex scandals, fierce rivalries, gambling excesses, boardroom rants, bar room bust-ups, media headbutting and taxi-hijacking that have taken place across all codes of football in Australia over the last few years. Bringing together historical perspective and contemporary insight, Bad Boys provides a glimpse into the past when 'to be a fan was an act of faith' and checks the pulse of the new generation of over-indulged players in a media saturated age. Roy Masters is a legend in the world of sport and an esteemed media commentator, and he offers plenty of stories from his own days coaching, covering, and watching 'bad boys'. Without shying away from the salacious stories and out-of-bounds antics, Roy brings genuine analysis and investigation into the current state of play and what can be done to apportion the blame, improve the behaviour and put footballers' actions into a larger social context. Chapters include 'Bad Boys and Bad Blood, 'Birds', 'Brawls', 'Betting', 'Bonding and Busted Bodies' and 'the Bench'. Covering stories across league, union, AFL and football - past and present - this book will provoke intra- and inter-code discussions across the country. Come on, you know you want to hang out with the Bad Boys...
Bethlem Hospital, popularly known as "Bedlam", is a unique institution. Now seven hundred and fifty years old, it has been continuously involved in the care of the mentally ill in London since at least the 1400s. As such it has a strong claim to be the oldest foundation in Europe with an unbroken history of sheltering and treating the mentally disturbed. During this time, Bethlem has transcended locality to become not only a national and international institution, but in many ways, a cultural and literary myth. The History of Bethlem is a scholarly history of this key establishment by distinguished authors, including Asa Briggs and Roy Porter. Based upon extensive research of the hospital's archives, the book looks at Bethlem's role within the caring institutions of London and Britain, and provides a long overdue re-evaluation of its place in the history of psychiatry.
First Published in 1983. Social problems have assumed a growing importance in France, as in all developed countries, especially since the end of the last century. While traditional early nineteenth century liberalism denied the existence of social problems as such, believing the greatest possible economic freedom to be the sole solution to all evils, the emphasis is still placed more and more insistently on the need for a definite and concerted welfare effort, to increase the material well-being of individuals and families. Since the second edition of this book was published in 1962, legislation and welfare services, and social reality itself have changed as much through circumstances as through political and economic evolution. It follows that the present edition of this book is, in fact, an almost wholly new book. It attempts to present a comprehensive view of French social life, drawing attention especially to welfare services and legislation as they are at the beginning of 1979.

Most of the Directors I've worked with needed someone to talk to who is deep inside the heart of the movie. - Mick Audsley, Film Editor Film editing is understood by the industry to be one of the most crucial contributions to film-making. World-class British editors such as Antony Gibbs and Anne Coates have received recognition of their importance in Hollywood and experienced British Editors have important roles in a surprising number of major American movies . This book attempts to explain this mot elusive of roles by allowing editors to describe in their own words what they do and to bring them into the critical and public spotlight. It is the most comprehensive survey of its kind to date and is based upon interviews with many distinguished editors who have worked on films as diverse as Blade Runner and Carry on Up the Khyber, Die Hard 2 and Blow Up, American Beauty and Performance. The British Film Editor also provides a detailed history of editing, together with extensive filmographies.
Britain has a rich heritage of school buildings dating from the later Middle Ages to the present day. While some of these schools have attracted the attention of architectural historians, they have not previously been considered from the educational viewpoint. Even schools of little or no architectural interest are important sociologically, since the changing architecture of schools reflects changing ideas about how children should be educated and organized for teaching purposes. Documentary material relating to education is often fragmentary, and buildings may thus constitute the only real source of knowledge about the development of particular schools and can also throw light on general educational history. Originally published in 1971 and 1977, these books are, therefore, not only a major contribution to architectural history but also a study in the development of educational ideas and practices from the fourteenth to the twentieth century.
Naturally occurring salt tolerant and halophytic plants (trees, shrubs, grasses, and forbs) have always been utilized by livestock as a supplement or drought reserve. Salt tolerant forage and fodder crops are now being planted over wide areas. Increasingly, large-scale production of fodder on formerly abandoned irrigated cropland has allowed salt t
This careful, sometimes innovative, mid-level commentary touches on an astonishingly wide swath of important, sensitive issues - theological and pastoral - that have urgent resonances in twenty-first-century life. This thorough commentary presents a coherent reading of 1 Corinthians, taking full account of its Old Testament and Jewish roots and demonstrating Paula's primary concern for the unity and purity of the church and the glory of God. Those who preach and teach 1 Corinthians will be grateful to Ciampa and Rosner for years to come and scholars will be challenged to see this letter with fresh eyes.
Kung Fu has evolved from a traditional means of defence to become a system of attacking and defending oneself, with or without weapons, exercising the body and maintaining good physical and mental health. As such, these practices have found an international following. Yet what has remained a largely unexplored area is the scientific principles behind these martial arts. This book not only covers the brief history of Chinese martial arts, but also brings together the wisdom of a Kung Fu grand master with a scientist and teacher to explain the scientific reasons why Kung Fu is the powerful practice that it is. Using the principles of physics, biomechanics and biology, with a number of drawings showing some basic postures of Kung Fu, the authors present a deep understanding of how the styles, the specific movements and methods of attack and defence operate.
This book is a collection of papers presented at an interdisciplinary workshop at the Calgary Institute for the Humanities in May 1980. The three broad issues covered are: the physician-patient relationship, the allocation of responsibility among doctors and nurses, and the political and social framework of the health care system. The first set of essays is concerned with the moral and legal aspects of the physician-patient relationship. The link between knowledge and power is examined as well as the moral dilemmas posed by medical technology. These initial essays would alone justify this publ.

First published in 1983, Teaching Under Attack examines the nature and direction of the attack on the education service, and on the teaching profession in particular. It examines the effects of cuts on UK schools and also considers how far the activities of teachers’ unions can counteract such trends. It looks at the issue of teachers’ st
Who among us has not at some point asked, what is the meaning of life?' In this extraordinary book, an eminent social scientist looks at the big picture and explores what empirical studies from diverse fields tell us about the human condition. MEANINGS OF LIFE draws together evidence from psychology, history, anthropology, and sociology, integrating copious research findings into a clear and conclusive discussion of how people attempt to make sense of their lives. In a lively and accessible style, emphasizing facts over theories, Baumeister explores why people desire meaning in their lives, how these meanings function, what forms they take, and what happens when life loses meaning. It is the most comprehensive examination of the topic to date.
In the late 1980s, the relationship between physical activity or exercise and aging was one of great contemporary interest. On the one hand there was a growing elderly population in industrialized societies seeking an active rather than a passive retirement, while on the other hand there was much current interest in the benefits to health of physical activity. The first edition of this book, published in 1978, was acknowledged as a major review of the field. In the years since its publication, however, there were many advances in our knowledge, made evident by the fact that this second edition, originally published in 1987, contains over 50 percent more references, 1840 in total. The author shows how far we can improve our adaptation to the aging process through an increase in personal fitness. Aimed at gerontologists, physicians in geriatric medicine and sports medicine, as well as other interested in human performance (for example, the physiologist, physical educator, ergonomist and physiotherapist), the book would remain a standard reference work on this subject for many years.
An Exploration of the Magic Rites and Practices of Traditional Witchcraft, both Past and Present, Nice and Naughty. The truth is, Magic is the stuff of Witchcraft; the very life-blood that gives vibrancy in all its other aspects. We are all born with a capacity for practicing Magic, yet it is a topic that strikes fear into many for what it might actually do to them. Magic has a bad reputation, notwithstanding that it guided our ancient ancestors to initially develop the survival skills and techniques that have ultimately led to our modern-day world of science and technology. Magic means pushing the boundaries of what might just be possible. It implies change and therefore unsanctioned Magic has always been seen as a threat to the status quo. Nevertheless, it is a fascinating discipline; exploring, developing, and expanding one’s own mental powers. It entails a quest. From the Magic of Love and Sex to Witcherie with a Purpose demands skill, determination, and ability. From Astral Projection to Psychic Protection; from Magical Healing to communicating with spiritual entities from the Astral; the practice of Traditional Witchcraft demands a knowledge of Apies Magic, both the Nice and the Naughty; but best not the practice of its really naughty aspects. A Witches’ Canon, Part 1, provides a fact-based referenced guide for those wishing to further explore the Religion and Celebratory Rituals of Traditional Wicca. A Witches’ Canon, Part 2, has been written to provide a practical, referenced guide to the social aspects of Traditional Wicca; of Coven Organization, Initiations, Rites, and Rituals. A Witches’ Canon, Part 3, is a fact-based referenced guide to the practice of Magical Witchcraft, both nice and naughty. But then, if it isn’t fun, then it ain’t worth doing.
