In Abolitionists Remember, Julie Roy Jeffrey illuminates a second, little-noted antislavery struggle as abolitionists in the postwar period attempted to counter the nation's growing inclination to forget why the war was fought, what slavery was really like, and why the abolitionist cause was so important. In the rush to mend fences after the Civil War, the memory of the past faded and turned romantic--slaves became quaint, owners kindly, and the war itself a noble struggle for the Union. Jeffrey examines the autobiographical writings of former abolitionists such as Laura Haviland, Frederick Douglass, Parker Pillsbury, and Samuel J. May, revealing that they wrote not only to counter the popular image of themselves as fanatics, but also to remind readers of the harsh reality of slavery and to advocate equal rights for African Americans in an era of growing racism, Jim Crow, and the Ku Klux Klan. These abolitionists, who went to great lengths to get their accounts published, challenged every important point of the reconciliation narrative, trying to salvage the nobility of their work for emancipation and African Americans and defending their own participation in the great events of their day.

Loss and grief are an inherent part of chronic illness. But while much has been written on grief associated with death and dying, the grief and losses accompanying chronic illness have received relatively little scholarly attention. In Chronic Pain, Loss, and Suffering, Ranjan Roy, a leading expert on chronic pain, addresses the complex issues related to loss among those with chronic illness. For many patients with chronic intractable pain disorders, the course of their illness is unpredictable and varied. Many seeming losses are transient and can be redeemed over time, for instance, through retraining and physical therapy, but are still serious and pose a challenge to the common understanding of the grief process. Clinical understanding of grief is undergoing a revolution. From its Freudian roots, it is shifting more and more to a social-psychological perspective. Widely acclaimed as a horror movie actress, Fay Wray is best remembered for her performances in King Kong and four other classic 1930s film thrillers, Doctor X, The Most Dangerous Game, Mystery of the Wax Museum and The Vampire Bat. The rationale for the design of structural analogues of a normal metabolite is that such compounds may interfere in the utilization or function of the metabolite. A compound which is effective in this respect may be called an antimetabolite. To be successful in chemotherapy of bacterial, viral, or tumor growth, an antimetabolite should adversely affect some vital metabolic reactions in the parasite or parasitic tissue without seriously endangering the host tissue. If a metabolic process of the offending growth is different from that of the host, it is likely that the metabolism or activity of a compound, structurally related to a metabolite involved in that process, will also be different in these cells. Such differences are useful for devising effective drugs with selective actions. Sulfanilamide, a structural analogue of para aminobenzoic acid, interferes with the utilization of this metabolite in the synthesis of folic acid, an essential factor for growth. Bacteria synthesize their own folic acid and are incapable of utilizing exogenously available folic acid. However, the situation is exactly opposite in the animal host. That is, animal tissues cannot synthesize folic acid and are absolutely dependent upon exogenous sources. These differences in metabolism make possible the use of sulfanilamide as a selective inhibitor of growth. Other antibacterial or antiparasitic drugs, such as penicillin (BURCHALL, FERONE and HITCHINGS, 1965) and inhibitors of dihydrofolate reductase (HITCHINGS and BURCHALL, 1965; HITCHINGS, 1964; BURCHALL and HITCHINGS, 1965) have analogous desirable selective toxicity effects.

When he left England in 1630 in search of religious freedom and opportunity during the Great Migration to the New World, pilgrim Edward Fitz Randolph Jr. could never have imagined the vast impact his descendants would have on the creation of America. Originally settling in Plymouth Colony, he later moved his family to New Jersey after the Puritan theocracy denied the very freedom he had sought. In 1669 the Fitz Randolphs became a founding family of New Jersey. Edward and his sons were farmers and major landowners who quickly became leaders in the development of the province, holding offices in both the local and provincial governments. Some Fitz Randolph family members were Quakers and early leaders of the movement to abolish slavery in the pre-Revolutionary War period. Another helped establish Princeton University. During the Revolutionary War some were heroes on the battlefield. Afterwards Fitz Randolphs were vanguards of the Industrial Revolution. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries they were architects, prominent physicians, bankers, social activists, judges, authors and members of Congress. Four relatives of Edward Fitz Randolph Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth Blossom, became presidents of the United States. Other Fitz Randolph family members transformed a mid-nineteenth-century manufacturing company into a ten-billion-dollar corporation by the beginning of the twenty-first century. In Philadelphia, Captain Edward Randolph, a hero at the Battle of Paoli, became a prominent entrepreneur after the Revolutionary War. His firm, Coates and Randolph based on 2nd Street was a major shipping and grocery enterprise in early Philadelphia history. His son, Dr. Jacob Randolph, a brilliant surgeon, succeeded Dr. Philip Syng Physick, “Father of American Surgery,” as Chief Surgeon and lecturer at Pennsylvania Hospital—the first hospital in the nation. Captain Randolph’s daughters, Julianna and Rachel, were founders of the Western Association of Women for the Relief an employment for the Poor—probably the country’s first job training program in America. Thousands of Pilgrims migrated to the New World seeking religious freedom and opportunity in the seventeenth century. Millions of immigrants followed over the next four centuries.
