Winner - 2022 Richard Wall Memorial Award, Theatre Library Association Beginning in the 1920s, audiences around the globe were seduced not only by Hollywood films but also by lavish movie theaters that were owned and operated by the major American film companies. These theaters aimed to provide a quintessentially “American” experience. Outfitted with American technology and accoutrements, they allowed local audiences to watch American films in an American-owned cinema in a distinctly American way. In a history that stretches from Buenos Aires and Tokyo to Johannesburg and Cairo, Ross Melnick considers these movie houses as cultural embassies. He examines how the exhibition of Hollywood films became a constant flow of political and consumerist messaging, selling American ideas, products, and power, especially during fractious eras. Melnick demonstrates that while Hollywood’s marketing of luxury and consumption often struck a chord with local audiences, it was also frequently tone-deaf to new social, cultural, racial, and political movements. He argues that the story of Hollywood’s global cinemas is not a simple narrative of cultural and industrial indoctrination and colonization. Instead, it is one of negotiation, booms and busts, successes and failures, adoptions and rejections, and a precursor to later conflicts over the spread of American consumer culture. Samuel ÒRoxyÓ Rothafel (1882Ð1936) built an influential and prolific career as film exhibitor, stage producer, radio broadcaster, musical arranger, theater manager, war propagandist, and international celebrity. He helped engineer the integration of film, music, and live performance in silent film exhibition; scored early Fox Movietone films such as Sunrise (1927); pioneered the convergence of film, broadcasting, and music publishing and recording in the 1920s; and helped movies and moviegoing become the dominant form of mass entertainment between the world wars. The first book devoted to RothafelÕs multifaceted career, American Showman examines his role as the key purveyor of a new film exhibition aesthetic that appropriated legitimate theater, opera, ballet, and classical music to attract multi-class audiences. Roxy scored motion pictures, produced enormous stage shows, managed many of New YorkÕs most important movie houses, directed and/or edited propaganda films for the American war effort, produced short and feature-length films, exhibited foreign, documentary, independent, and avant-garde motion pictures, and expanded the conception of mainstream, commercial cinema. He was also one of the chief creators of the radio variety program, pioneering radio broadcasting, promotions, and tours. The producers and promoters of distinct themes and styles, showmen like Roxy profoundly remade the moviegoing experience, turning the deluxe motion picture theater into a venue for exhibiting and producing live and recorded entertainment. RoxyÕs interest in media convergence also reflects a larger moment in which the entertainment industry began to create brands and franchises, exploit them through content release Òevents,Ó and give rise to feature films, soundtracks, broadcasts, live performances, and related consumer products. Regularly cited as one of the twelve most important figures in the film and radio industries, Roxy was instrumental to the development of film exhibition and commercial broadcasting, musical accompaniment, and a new, convergent entertainment industry.

The North Australian Pastoral Company is one of Australia’s largest and oldest private cattle companies. It began in the 1877 rush to take up land in the Northern Territory. A vast area of the Barkly Tableland was leased by a partnership of five men: Queenslanders William Collins, William Forrest and Sir Thomas McIlwraith, and Englishmen Sir William Ingram and John Warner. Today, the family-based company which evolved from the partnership still holds the greater part of that original land as Alexandria Station – the biggest cattle station in the Northern Territory. Descendent of three original partners still hold shares in the NAP company. The title – You Can’t Make it Rain – derives form a poignant comment of Phillip Forrest, managing director and chairman of NAP, shortly before he resignation in 1936. Forrest wrote. ‘I have done my best over a long trying period, but I cannot make it rain.’ The comment is a telling reminder of the over-riding importance of water for pastoralists, and of the often grim struggle for survival in that industry. You Can’t Make It Rain is the story of one notable survivor.

This book is full of rich and expressive examples of insult and invective for all occasions from all over Scotland. These have been passed down through the centuries or have emerged in modern times, proving that clever insults are infinitely more amusing and memorable than good jokes. And so, happy reading. In today’s political and economic climate, broad and easy agreement with the basic premise of labor law – to stimulate the economy by putting more money into the pockets of working people – is not likely. Bad economic times are generally not good for labor organization and labor standards. There is, of course, still an important for labor and employment and good practices to help resolve employment disputes. New York University’s venerable and prestigious Center for Labor and Employment Law has always been dedicated to the underlying principles of labor law as expressed in the National Labor Relations Act seventy-five years ago, despite recent economic challenges unforeseen at that time. The Center’s 2010 conference (the 63rd in this highly influential series) was built around a stocktaking of the current condition of labor law in the United States, focusing on the continuities and disparities that characterize practice in the field today. This volume contains papers presented at that meeting, all here updated to reflect recent developments. Extending beyond the NLRA itself, contributors discuss the effects of later legislation such as the Wagner and Taft-Hartley Acts of 1947, agencies such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs, and proliferating connections between labor relations law and intellectual property law. Experts from both the practicing bar and academia – eighteen in all – call on their unique strengths to address such issues as the following: new applications of the § 10(j) injunction; remedies for unlawful discharges in organizing campaigns; confidentiality agreements; “legitimate employer interests”; reasonableness standard for enforcement of covenants not to compete; criminal prosecutions under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act; the role of statistical evidence in systemic discrimination cases; certification for class actions; cultivating a “plan/prevent/protect” culture of compliance; and employee representation election regulation. The contributors emphasize the ways in which labor law and policy can be part of the great conversation about how to restore prosperity, encourage business, and create good jobs. Dedicated to ensuring a realistic and fair national labor policy for the future, this important publication offers definitive current scholarship toward that goal. For 1970, the Road Runner had its strongest year yet as it housed the best street V-8s Chrysler had to offer. Author Scott Ross retraces the history of the Road Runner and brings the 1970 model year into full focus. The stripped-down Road Runner exemplified the essence of a purpose-built muscle car: brute power and stunning acceleration. A new aggressive grille and Air Grabber hood provided an audacious yet tasteful performance statement. The back-to-basics 'Bird had a unique character with its iconic cartoon Road Runner graphics and beep-beep horn.

Underneath the skin, the Road Runner lived up to its persona. The 335-hp 383 was one of fastest 383s Chrysler built because it was fitted with the 440 camshaft, heads, and manifolds for even more performance. The 440 Six Pack car generated 390 hp and gained a reputation as a stout street performer. And at the top, the conservatively rated 425-hp 426 Hemi set the standard for performance. The Road Runner was lighter than the Cuda and somewhat overbuilt as it was one of the toughest and most consistent muscle cars. To transfer all this power to the ground, the Road Runner was equipped with the A-833 4-speed or TorqueFlite 727 automatic. With a torsion-bar suspension and heavy-duty rear end, the Road Runner handled well. However, these are just a few of the highlights of this complete story. This study is an investigation of the arrival, planting, and expansion of the Church of England in Loyalist New Brunswick. The obstacles encountered in setting up missions in the frontier both before and after the arrival of Bishop Charles Inglis are documented. It is revealed that the origins, qualifications, zeal, and adaptability of the colony's missionaries were key factors in the Church's foundation and success. Legislated establishment, although British policy, proved half-hearted and of little benefit in colonial New Brunswick. While imperial attention to colonial religious policy was short-lived, the continued interest and aid of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG) was crucial. inability to fully understand and appreciate the New Brunswick reality, the SPG remained the only secure source of clerical income. Given the frontier economy, SPG funds were critical to the Church, but it was in the end the exertions of Bishop Inglis and his small band of former New England missionaries who effected, the establishment and long-term viability of the Church of England in Loyalist New Brunswick.
