Born on a farm near Anahuac, Texas, in 1875 and possessed of only a fourth-grade education, Ross Sterling was one of the most successful Texans of his generation. Driven by a relentless work ethic, he become a wealthy oilman, banker, newspaper publisher, and, from 1931 to 1933, one-term governor of Texas. Sterling was the principal founder of the Humble Oil and Refining Company, which eventually became the largest division of the ExxonMobil Corporation, as well as the owner of the Houston Post. Eager to "preserve a narrative record of his life and deeds," Ross Sterling hired Ed Kilman, an old friend and editorial page editor of the Houston Post, to write his biography. Though the book was nearly finished before Sterling's death in 1949, it never found a publisher due to Kilman's florid writing style and overly hagiographic portrayal of Sterling. In this volume, by contrast, editor Don Carleton uses the original oral history dictated by Ross Sterling to Ed Kilman to present the former governor's life story in his own words. Sterling vividly describes his formative years, early business ventures, and active role in developing the Texas oil industry. He also recalls his political career, from his appointment to the Texas Highway Commission to his term as governor, ending with his controversial defeat for reelection by "Ma" Ferguson. Sterling's reminiscences constitute an important primary source not only on the life of a Texan who deserves to be more widely remembered, but also on the history of Houston and the growth of the American oil industry.

Repopulation in Orleans Parish has slowed considerably; the parish remains at best two-thirds of its former size; thousands of former residents who wish to return face barriers of many kinds. Heroic efforts at rebuilding have occurred through the efforts of individual neighborhood associations and voluntary associations who have attempted to address serious losses in affordable housing and health care services. Walking to New Orleans traces how a dominant but paradoxical model of the relation between the human and natural worlds in Western culture has informed many environmental and engineering dilemmas and has contributed to the history of social inequities and injustice that anteceded the disasters of the hurricanes and subsequent flooding. It proposes a model for collaborative recovery that links principles of ethics and engineering, in which citizens become active, ongoing participants in the process of the reconstruction and redesign of their unique locus of habitation. Equally important, it gives voice to the citizens and associations who are desperately working to rebuild their homes and lives both in urban New Orleans and in the villages of coastal Louisiana.

Track housing was designed to mass-produce shelter and appliances relieved the hard work of washing clothes, cleaning floors, and preparing food.Cheek, as he came to be called, was prepared for anything life could throw at him. Known in the world of racing, Carroll Cheek was something of an enigma. He knew mechanics. He could build any type of engine. This understanding seemed natural to him as he did not go to college or trade school to learn mechanics. While he had jobs in the world of automobile mechanics, dairy distribution, and his own company of oil and gas storage, Delta Tank, he always migrated back to his first love-building and restoring engines. He built race car engines. He built airplane engines. He built dune buggy and motorcycle engines. To say he liked to "go fast'" is an understatement. He loved to go fast! The faster, the better. He far exceeded the nine lives allotted to any human being. He survived multiple race car, motorcycle, and airplane crashes. He lived with someone else's liver in his body. He made surviving death an art. This is the story of a man who knew few boundaries, always creating new ones, and lived life on his terms. This is the story of the life and times of Carroll B. Cheek.

A historical and legal examination of the conflict and interplay between settler and indigenous laws in the New World As British and Iberian empires expanded across the New World, differing notions of justice and legality played out against one another as settlers and indigenous people sought to negotiate their relationship. In order for settlers and natives to learn from, maneuver, resist, or accommodate each other, they had to grasp something of each other's legal ideas and conceptions of justice. This ambitious volume advances our understanding of how natives and settlers in both the British and Iberian New World empires struggled to use the other’s ideas of law and justice as a political, strategic, and moral resource. In so doing, indigenous people and settlers alike changed their own practices of law and dialogue about justice. Europeans and natives appealed to imperfect understandings of their interlocutors’ notions of justice and advanced their own conceptions during workaday negotiations, disputes, and assertions of right. Settlers’ and indigenous peoples’ legal presuppositions shaped and sometimes misdirected their attempts to employ each other’s law. Natives and settlers construed and misconstrued each other's legal commitments while learning about them, never quite sure whether they were on solid ground. Chapters explore the problem of “legal intelligibility”: How and to what extent did settler law and its associated notions of justice became intelligible—tactically, technically and morally—to natives, and vice versa? To address this question, the volume offers a critical comparison between English and Iberian New World empires. Chapters probe such topics as treaty negotiations, land sales, and the corporate privileges of indigenous peoples. Ultimately, Justice in a New World offers both a deeper understanding of the transformation of notions of justice and law among settlers and indigenous people, and a dual comparative study of what it means for laws and moral codes to be legally intelligible.

Ice hockey was established at the University of New Hampshire in 1914, but the first team was short-lived. Ten years later, football coach Hank Swasey put together a team that marked the official beginning of intercollegiate ice hockey at UNH. Wildcat Hockey: Ice Hockey at the University of New Hampshire documents the early years of the program with photographs of players, various outdoor rinks, and horse drawn ice scrapers. After a four-year absence during World War II, ice hockey returned to UNH in 1947.Wildcat Hockey includes photographs of the colorful players, whose success was enhanced by the installation of the first artificial ice rink in 1955 and the opening of Snively Arena in 1965. The hiring of coach Charlie Holt in 1968 and the transition to Division I marked a new era in ice hockey at UNH, as did the creation of its first women's ice hockey team in 1977. Wildcat Hockey provides a visual record of the exploits of the men and women who have put UNH on the collegiate ice hockey map. Their efforts are marked by the move to the Whittemore Center in 1995, to the 1998 Women's National Championship, and to regular trips to the Frozen Four for both teams. This collection draws on the rich photographic sources in the university archives and the campus photographic services.
