Spiritual seekers from many traditions have used darkness as a method for exploring hidden aspects of unconscious and super-conscious states, and for embracing the deeper recesses of the self. Heaven and Buxton show how experiencing complete darkness, even for only a period of hours, brings about a remarkable clarity and mental stillness, and thus provides a springboard for creativity, intuition, and spiritual development.
The history of San Pedro and its uses for healing, creativity, and conscious evolution • Includes interviews with practicing San Pedro shamans on their rituals, cactus preparations, and teachings on how San Pedro heals the mind and body • Contains accounts from people who have been healed by San Pedro • Includes chapters by Eve Bruce, M.D., and David Luke, Ph.D., on San Pedro’s effects on psychic abilities and its similarities to and differences from ayahuasca San Pedro, the legendary cactus of vision, has been used by the shamans of Peru for at least 3,500 years. Referring to St. Peter, who holds the keys to Heaven, its name is suggestive of the plant’s visionary power to open the gates between the visible and invisible worlds, allowing passage to an ecstatic realm where miraculous physical and spiritual healings occur, love and enthusiasm for life are rekindled, the future divined, and the soul’s purpose revealed. Exploring the history and shamanic uses of the San Pedro cactus, Ross Heaven interviews practicing San Pedro shamans about ancient and modern rituals, preparation of the visionary brew, experiences with the healing spirit of San Pedro, and their teachings on how the cactus works on the mind, body, and illness. He investigates the conditions treated by San Pedro as well as how it can enhance creativity, providing case studies from those who have been healed by the cactus and accounts from those who have been artistically and musically inspired through its use. Psychedelic researchers Eve Bruce, M.D., David Luke, Ph.D., and journalist Morgan Maher contribute chapters delving into San Pedro’s effects on conscious evolution and psychic abilities as well as its similarities to and differences from ayahuasca. Exploring plant communication and the vital role of music in San Pedro ceremonies, Heaven explains how healing songs are communicated by the sacred plants to the shamans working with them, much in the same way that other gifts of San Pedro--from healing to inspiration to expanded consciousness--are passed to those who commune with this ancient plant teacher.
The first practical guide to the transformative uses of salvia • Explains how salvia connects you with your higher purpose and aids you in envisioning your unique path in life • Describes appropriate methods of use, a shamanic diet to increase effectiveness, and the meaning of the symbols experienced during salvia’s ecstatic embrace • Explores recent clinical research into salvia’s long-term positive psychological effects and its potential as a treatment for Alzheimer’s, depression, and addiction Salvia divinorum has been used since ancient times by the Mazatec shamans of Mexico for divination, vision quests, and healing. Known by many names--nearly all associated with the Virgin Mary, who has come to symbolize the spirit of salvia--this plant ally is now regarded as the most powerful natural hallucinogen. Providing the first practical guide to the shamanic, spiritual, and therapeutic uses of salvia, Ross Heaven shares his in-depth quest to connect with the spirit of this plant teacher. He explores recent clinical research into its many long-term psychological effects, such as increased insight and self-confidence, improved mood and concentration, and feelings of calmness and connection with nature, as well as salvia’s potential for combating diseases like Alzheimer’s, depression, and even cocaine addiction. Reviewing the traditional Mazatec ceremonies surrounding salvia’s harvest and use, Heaven describes appropriate methods of consumption, typical dosages, and the shamanic diet he used to increase salvia’s effectiveness. Examining firsthand accounts of salvia journeys from around the world, he decodes the meaning of the symbolic images experienced during salvia’s ecstatic embrace and details the interplay between salvia and the lucid dreaming state. Comparing salvia to ayahuasca and the San Pedro cactus, Heaven explains that salvia’s greatest strength as a shamanic plant ally lies in its ability to connect you with your higher purpose and aid you in envisioning your unique path in life.
FOUNDATIONS takes an in depth approach to the design and function of ministry and discipleship. We find in the modern Church a great need for discipleship and spiritual training. Many believers, who "know to do good," struggle in their daily spiritual life as they long for an expression of overcoming faith. FOUNDATIONS leads the reader into a meaningful recognition of their place in Christ. He is our righteousness and God's grace and goodness leads every saint into a repentant and firm faith. There are two kinds of "knowledge" spoken of in the Bible, which are information and application. Information is knowledge that "puffs up" (1 Corinthians 8:1), due to the potential it has to lure people into believing that the more information they have about the Bible, the more mature they are. Hosea speaks about the second type of knowledge when he wrote: "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge." He was expressing our need for the application of God's word that is necessary for the salvation of our souls and the impartation of Christ-likeness every Christ needs. The application of spiritual truth is the key to an overcoming faith and a renewed mind. Because of this, FOUNDATIONS offers a functional approach to Discipleship and spiritual training which develops the believer's ability to stand firm in the faith they profess. With this in mind; Solomon asked God for an understanding heart (i.e., "a hearing heart" - 1 Kings 3:9), because he understood that in order for anyone to be inclined toward wisdom they had to first hear God. FOUNDATIONS is designed to help the believer mature in their faith by expanding their ability to renew their mind while they develop an understanding heart, so they can learn to hear the Holy Spirit in a clarifying way. Every saint must mature in their ability to hear God as they read the Bible and listen to the Holy Spirit, and this is more readily accomplished through the discipleship process and through spiritual growth. FOUNDATIONS is an exegetical study that was compiled over twenty-eight years of pastoral and ministry experience. It is a study of the Scripture that dives deeply into the ways of God as it also expounds on many of the principles, practices, and doctrines found in the Scriptures. FOUNDATIONS is a practical tool for the serious disciple, and an aid for every Church leader.
Samuel "Roxy" Rothafel (1882–1936) built an influential and prolific career as film exhibitor, stage producer, radio broadcaster, musical arranger, theater manager, war propagandist, and international celebrity. He helped engineer the integration of film, music, and live performance in silent film exhibition; scored early Fox Movietone films such as Sunrise (1927); pioneered the convergence of film, broadcasting, and music publishing and recording in the 1920s; and helped movies and moviegoing become the dominant form of mass entertainment between the world wars. The first book devoted to Rothafel's multifaceted career, American Showman examines his role as the key purveyor of a new film exhibition aesthetic that appropriated legitimate theater, opera, ballet, and classical music to attract multi-class audiences. Roxy scored motion pictures, produced enormous stage shows, managed many of New York's most important movie houses, directed and/or edited propaganda films for the American war effort, produced short and feature-length films, exhibited foreign, documentary, independent, and avant-garde motion pictures, and expanded the conception of mainstream, commercial cinema. He was also one of the chief creators of the radio variety program, pioneering radio broadcasting, promotions, and tours. The producers and promoters of distinct themes and styles, showmen like Roxy profoundly remade the moviegoing experience, turning the deluxe motion picture theater into a venue for exhibiting and producing live and recorded entertainment. Roxy's interest in media convergence also reflects a larger moment in which the entertainment industry began to create brands and franchises, exploit them through content release "events," and give rise to feature films, soundtracks, broadcasts, live performances, and related consumer products. Regularly cited as one of the twelve most important figures in the film and radio industries, Roxy was instrumental to the development of film exhibition and commercial broadcasting, musical accompaniment, and a new, convergent entertainment industry.
The tension between executive prerogative in times of emergency and the importance of maintaining and preserving the rule of law has been a perennial concern for modern democratic states. The Lockean Commonwealth reappraises John Locke's contribution to this timely topic. By paying careful attention to the arguments put forward in Locke's famous Two Treatises on Government, Ross J. Corbett advances a new interpretation of Locke's political agenda, one that argues that the interplay between "prerogative" and "legislative supremacy" formed the axis around which turned the practical component of Locke's political theory. With a firm grasp of Locke's historical context, Corbett is able to show how Locke's attempts to balance these competing interests provides insight, not only into the development of the liberal democratic state, but also into questions that trouble us to this day and into questions of political life more generally.
The subtitle of Maggie Ross's new book captures its essence, for it is about silence and our need to behold God. Beholding is a notion that we are in danger of losing. It is often lost in translation, even by the NRSV and the Jerusalem Bible. Beholding needs to be recovered both in theology and practice. Ross is very aware of "poor talkative Christianity." There is a twofold plea to enter into silence--for lack of silence erodes our humanity--and to behold the radiance of God. This is a book full of deep questioning and the testing of our assumptions. Throughout there is a great love for the world and for our humanity, accompanied by sadness that we are so easily distracted . . . . We are invited into a silence that is not necessarily an absence of noise, but is a limitless interior space. Ancient texts are used in new and exciting ways, and many of our worship practices are challenged. She is in no doubt that "the glory of the human being is the beholding of God." --adapted from a review in The Church Times (London) by Canon David Adam.
Some observers expect China to become an economic superpower. Others expect it to fragment into pieces. Is China nationalistic and on the march, or is it a stumbling Communist dinosaur? Is it already a billion-citizen member of the global village? Is it, as the Clinton administration claimed, a "strategic partner" of the U.S.? Ross Terrill addresses the question upon which all these others depend: Is the People's Republic of China, whose polity is a hybrid of Chinese tradition and Western Marxism, willing to become a modern nation or does it insist on remaining an empire? Since the collapse of three thousand years of Confucian monarchy in 1911, China has neither established a successful political system nor adjusted to being a nation state. Today it stands as the most contradictory of major powers, hovering between an unsustainable tradition and a yet-to-be-born political form that would support its new society and economy. Hanging in the balance are the prospect for freedom within China (for both Chinese and non-Chinese citizens of the People's Republic), the future of America's relations with China, and the security of China's neighbors. Drawing upon Terrill's long experience studying China as well as upon new research, this enlightening and rigorous book will be a must-read for everyone who has a stake in the future of the global world order.

This is the second in a series of five volumes on the lexicon of Proto Oceanic, the ancestor of the Oceanic branch of the Austronesian language family. Each volume deals with a particular domain of culture and/or environment and consists of a collection of essays each of which presents and comments on lexical reconstructions of a particular semantic field within that domain. Volume 2 examines how Proto Oceanic speakers described their geophysical environment. An introductory chapter discusses linguistic and archaeological evidence that locates the Proto Oceanic language community in the Bismarck Archipelago in the late 2nd millennium BC. The next three chapters investigate terms used to denote inland, coastal, reef and open sea environments, and meteorological phenomena. A further chapter examines the lexicon for features of the heavens and navigational techniques associated with the stars. How Proto Oceanic speakers talked about their environment is also described in three further chapters which treat property terms for describing inanimate objects, locational and directional terms, and terms related to the expression of time.

This illuminating study offers a radical new understanding of how the Aztecs and other Mesoamerican societies conceived of time and history. Based on their enormously complex calendars that recorded cycles of many kinds, the Aztecs and other ancient Mesoamerican civilizations are generally believed to have had a cyclical, rather than linear, conception of time and history. This boldly revisionist book challenges that understanding. Ross Hassig offers convincing evidence that for the Aztecs time was predominantly linear, that it was manipulated by the state as a means of controlling a dispersed tribute empire, and that the Conquest cut off state control and severed the unity of the calendar, leaving only the lesser cycles. From these, he asserts, we have inadequately reconstructed the pre-Columbian calendar and so misunderstood the Aztec conception of time and history. Hassig first presents the traditional explanation of the Aztec calendrical system and its ideological functions and then marshals contrary evidence to argue that the Aztec elite deliberately used calendars and timekeeping to achieve practical political ends. He further traces how the Conquest played out in the temporal realm as Spanish conceptions of time partially displaced the Aztec ones.
The Corpus Aristotelicum (The Complete Aristotle) is the collection of Aristotle's works that have survived from antiquity through Medieval manuscript transmission. These texts, as opposed to Aristotle's lost works, are technical philosophical treatises from within Aristotle's school. Reference to them is made according to the original texts of Aristotle, which in turn is based on ancient classifications of these works. This complete Book consist of (Contents): Biography (About Aristotle) Part 1: Logic (Organon) Part 2. Universal Physics Part 3: Human Physics Part 4: Animal Physics Part 5: Metaphysics Part 6: Ethics and Politics Part 7: Aesthetic Writings Aristotle, Greek Aristoteles, (born 384 BCE, Stagira, Chalcidice, Greece—died 322, Chalcis, Euboea), ancient Greek philosopher and scientist, one of the greatest intellectual figures of Western history. He was the author of a philosophical and scientific system that became the framework and vehicle for both Christian Scholasticism and medieval Islamic philosophy. Even after the intellectual revolutions of the Renaissance, the Reformation, and the Enlightenment, Aristotelian concepts remained embedded in Western thinking. Aristotle's intellectual range was vast, covering most of the sciences and many of the arts, including biology, botany, chemistry, ethics, history, logic, metaphysics, rhetoric, philosophy of mind, philosophy of science, physics, poetics, political theory, psychology, and zoology. He was the founder of formal logic, devising for it a finished system that for centuries was regarded as the sum of the discipline; and he pioneered the study of zoology, both observational and theoretical, in which some of his work remained unsurpassed until the 19th century. But he is, of course, most outstanding as a philosopher. His writings in ethics and political theory as well as in metaphysics and the philosophy of science continue to be studied, and his work remains a powerful current in contemporary philosophical debate.
Glory and glorification are familiar words in Christendom’s alphabet soup. These words are sipped and enjoyed as part of religious sustenance. But what exactly is the nature of glory and glorification? Professor Kingwell unveils the breadth and depth of meaning of these words. He takes us on an exploratory and reflective journey. He provides many valuable insights and useful reflections.
While translating the Bible into Boko, a language of Benin Republic in West Africa, Dr Jones grappled with the meaning of the expression ‘kingdom of God’. It seemed impossible to find an expression in Boko which would convey the correct meaning in its various contexts. What could it mean to enter or inherit the kingdom of God? Why did Jesus say the kingdom of God is near, or among people? How do we expect the prayer ‘your kingdom come’ to be worked out? Jesus said we should be concerned above all with God’s kingdom, and yet on questioning Christians and pastors, local and international, I few people are able to explain the meaning and relevance of the kingdom of God. Those who do know something usually interpret the kingdom according to their view of the millennium, resulting in very different interpretations of end-time events. Some interpret the kingdom as God’s sovereignty over the universe, others as ‘God’s rule in our hearts’, ‘Christ’s present salvation and its benefits’, or ‘the new life in Christ’. Many think of heaven as our destination, and the kingdom becomes a shadowy doctrine, rather than the glorious truth that God has made the saints to be a kingdom of priests who will reign with the Messiah over the earth. This new look at the theology of the kingdom of God clarifies many of the riddles concerning the kingdom and presents a new understanding of Jesus and his ministry as the Messiah. The book explains clearly what Jesus meant by this unique and cryptic phrase, and it makes sense in every context. The kingdom is truly a pearl of great price to be eagerly awaited as the return of the Messiah draws ever nearer.
Traces the history of the idea of art as an ethical movement, interpreting the good as nature's abundance, giving rise to an ethics of inclusion, expressed in art.
That Measure for Measure, a work of the dramatist's maturity, remains the focus of unresolved controversy calls into question the adequacy of Shakespeare criticism to be answerable to "what he hath left us." This book illustrates a way to conduct eclectic and historical criticism capable of manifesting this problematic play's coherence. It closely studies as drama, according to the conventions demonstrably presupposed, the play indicated by the text when construed as Shakespeare's extant provisions for its performance." "Analysis shows that Measure for Measure's principal interest cannot be character as such, but rather the searching play of thought, about a rich nexus of issues radical to our humanity, projected through the staged action it informs. To apprehend it, attention to structure, dramaturgy, and methods of representation is as essential as studying how Shakespeare uses ideas received from his co-creating culture." "Through this study, Measure for Measure emerges as a great play; uniquely daring in conception, scope, and comic purgation; humanely wise and balanced in outlook; brilliant in dramaturgical wit; exhilaratingly entertaining; and perhaps Shakespeare's most sophisticated work, though its coherence has often previously been clouded by misconstrual."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. About this book, many valuable lessons are taught and may be learned if the reader has a very high appreciation of the scriptures, especially of someone who attended Bob Jones University to study the Hebrew and Greek in depth immediately after he was saved. Essentially, the reader must be receptive to tearing down the walls of traditional teaching and lifting up the openness of what the Bible actually says. If so, Ross Holmes, missionary, teacher, pastors up-to-date articles he has penned for everyone, but particularly students and lovers of the Bible will prove rewarding riches indeed His writings get down to the Scriptural nitty-gritty, NOT what does Brother So-and-So teach? There are twenty-seven chapters of Bible principles the Lord intends for us to inquire into. It is our privilege to put on our thinking caps and ride along on this exciting journey with many stop-overs to search the Scriptures ourselves, to add our knowledge to the different curves and stops. The lessons begin about The enemies of God, Armageddon, Flesh Opposed to God, Three Disobedient Prophets, Satans Methods, Riches, the Heavens, Hell, Gehenna, the third Heaven, and much more. We who have known Brother Holmes personally have observed his the Lord comes first humble life. He was saved at twenty-one, was never religious by his own words, attended church occasionally, but never prayed, never thought of God. With the result that he came to the Lord without any baggage of traditional teaching. He devoured the Scriptures unimpaired. He came to them with no preconceived set ways. He was open to What saith the Lord. It goes without saying, he wasnt perfect, but his overpowering determination that others should study their Bibles and join him in his quest for knowing his destination because of Gods Great Love for everyone was fully illuminated. The well known verse, John 3:16, was the first verse he believed: For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Praise the Lord.
Literate world history took shape during the course of the third millennium BCE chiefly in the Mesopotamian land of Sumer. There is a vast difference between the way secular scholars process this data and the way believers in the Bible can and should process it. By accepting at face value both the chronological perspective of the Bible and the high longevities of the Noahic patriarchs, biblicists can make sense of Sumerian data and revolutionize the image of world history at its source. This book details the genealogical comparisons of all the nations mythological pantheons with the Genesis Chapter 10 list of post flood patriarchs and establishes a foundation for building a true history of mankind. 420 pp.
Quantum Mechanics makes visible God has founded the material realm, His creation, on enigmas and inexplicable microscopic events. Not a mathematician, scientist or physicist of the past nor any of the present day, understands the astonishing performance of the atomic and subatomic realm. The quantum field is astounding - Christian testimonies of 'quantum' like experiences and Gods revelation of His activity with matter are even more astonishing. Time travel has eluded scientists, but God sent Bruce D Allen back in time before he had time to think about it. Gods response to his questions? "Don't limit me." Quantum Mechanics is the study of the very very small. One million atoms lined up side by side would fit on the period at the end of this sentence. Yet they are the source of nuclear power. God has given us the simple version in the first chapters of Genesis. Quantum Mechanics has uncovered the elaborate complexity behind the simple words in Genesis. The quantum field has many surprises. It might be more correct to say it is all surprises. Albert Einstein could not accept the riddles of the quantum. He held out for common sense to prevail. He was disappointed. The discoveries of Quantum Mechanics are in use in many fields. We have learnt to use it while accepting we will probably never understand it. We have come upon the secrets of God.
* Was Adam the first man created or were there others before him? * Was Cain really Adam's Son? * Was there other beings on Noah's ark besides the animals, which explains the different nationalities? * Is there really a rapture or will we be here during the tribulation There is much much more included in this book.
Equivocation replaced Thomistic analogy as a means of predicting God in the minds of many seventeenth-century divines. In this study, Professor Asals analyses George Herbert’s use of language as a method of devotion in his major cycle poem, The Temple. Tracing the logical notion of equivocation (here the extensive us of puns and pun-like verbal devices) as prediction through other influences on his poetry, she argues that the very basis of Herbert’s work lies in its responsibility in predicting God as One and Love. Asals explains that, for Herbert, the act of writing a poem—the actual handwriting—was a sacramental and ceremonial act of worship recreating Christ’s death on the cross: ink becomes blood. The sign on the printed page points sacramentally to the blood it signifies. Thus, the domain of Herbert’s poetry reaches from earth to heaven and from heaven to earth. Continuing with an examination of Herbert’s language, including aspects of phonology, morphology, and syntax, Asals reveals its two-fold significance in expression and meaning. Through a detailed reading of the entire corpus, she investigates the profound influence of Augustinianism and Wisdom literature on the way poetry works and explores the meaning of gesture and its importance to Herbert’s Anglicanism—his belief in the importance of ceremony. In the final chapter, on the topos of Magdalene, its relationship to Herbert’s mother, and his mother’s importance to his writing, Asals argues that Anglicanism as a way to God (and God as a way to himself) is at the very core of Herbert’s poetics. This book establishes a new critical milieu in which Herbert may be interpreted and sheds new light on the poetry of other writers of the period.
