Until the nineteenth century, music occupied a marginal place in British universities. Degrees were awarded by Oxford and Cambridge, but students (and often professors) were not resident, and there were few formal lectures. It was not until a benefaction initiated the creation of a professorship of music at the University of Edinburgh, in the early nineteenth century, that the idea of music as a university discipline commanded serious consideration. The debates that ensued considered not only music’s identity as art and science, but also the broader function of the university within education and society. Rosemary Golding traces the responses of some of the key players in musical and academic culture to the problems surrounding the establishment of music as an academic discipline. The focus is on four universities: Edinburgh, Oxford, Cambridge and London. The different institutional contexts, and the approaches taken to music in each university, showcase the various issues surrounding music’s academic identity, as well as wider problems of status and professionalism. In examining the way music challenged conceptions of education and professional identity in the nineteenth century, the book also sheds light on the way the academic study of music continues to challenge modern approaches to music and university education.
Charles Booth's pioneering survey, Life and Labour of the People in London, published in 17 volumes between 1889 and 1903, was a landmark in empirical social investigation. His panorama of London life has dominated all subsequent accounts: its scope, precision and detail make it an unrivalled source for the period. In Painted Pottery of Honduras Rosemary Joyce describes the development of the Ulua Polychrome tradition in Honduras from the fifth to sixteenth centuries AD, and critically examines archaeological research on these objects that began in the nineteenth century. Previously treated as a marginal product of Classic Maya society, this study shows that Ulua Polychromes are products of the ritual and social life of indigenous societies composed of wealthy farmers engaged in long-distance relationships extending from Costa Rica to Mexico. Drawing on concepts of agency, practice, and intention, Rosemary Joyce takes a potter's perspective and develops a generational workshop model for innovation by communities of practice who made and used painted pottery in serving meals and locally meaningful ritual practices.

A Place by the River is a collection of historical fiction stories inspired by those who lived in and around the lost riverside villages of the St. Lawrence River before and after the St. Lawrence Seaway and Power Development Project of the 1950s. Formerly located on the north shore of the river, between the city of Cornwall, Ontario, and the town of Morrisburg, these lost villages included the communities of Milles Roches, Moulinette, Dickinson’s Landing, Wales, Farrans’s Point, and Aultsville, and the hamlets of Woodlands, Santa Cruz, and Maple Grove. They were sacrificed for the sake of the St. Lawrence Seaway and Power Project, which inundated their lands. On the Canadian side of the river, more than 6,000 people were displaced and some 200 farms destroyed. These stories provide a glimpse into the lives and the souls of a special people who once lived along this great river. Their lands may now be covered by Lake St. Lawrence, but the spirit of those who once lived there remains. It was their place by the river, and it shall always be so.
