Focusing on the mother's experience of pain and her contribution to its control, this accessible text covers the background to historical and scientific understanding of pain and considers methods of researching and measuring pain. Now in its 2nd edition, Pain in Childbearing and its Control explores pregnancy, labour and puerperal pain, along with fetal and neonatal pain. As well as approaching the topic in considerable depth, the word 'pain' is interpreted broadly. Throughout the text, research-based theoretical approaches to pain and pain control are presented within the context of care. The possibility of caring interventions being iatrogenic, or aggravating the woman's pain, lends this book a perceptively political orientation. In his landmark book, The Time Paradox, internationally known psychologist Philip Zimbardo showed that we can transform the way we think about our past, present, and future to attain greater success in work and in life. Now, in The Time Cure, Zimbardo has teamed with clinicians Richard and Rosemary Sword to reveal a groundbreaking approach that helps those living with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to shift their time perspectives and move beyond the traumatic past toward a more positive future. Time Perspective Therapy switches the focus from past to present, from negative to positive, clearing the pathway for the best yet to come: the future. It helps PTSD sufferers pull their feet out of the quicksand of past traumas and step firmly on the solid ground of the present, allowing them to take a step forward into a brighter future. Rather than viewing PTSD as a mental illness the authors see it as a mental injury—a normal reaction to traumatic events—and offer those suffering from PTSD the healing balm of hope. The Time Cure lays out the step-by-step process of Time Perspective Therapy, which has proven effective for a wide range of individuals, from veterans to survivors of abuse, accidents, assault, and neglect. Rooted in psychological research, the book also includes a wealth of vivid and inspiring stories from real-life PTSD sufferers—effective for individuals seeking self-help, their loved ones, therapists and counselors, or anyone who wants to move forward to a brighter future.

This fascinating and wide-ranging book charts developments in the teaching and study of handwriting over the course of the twentieth century. The book shows how changing educational policies, economic forces and inevitable technological advance have combined to alter the priorities and form of handwriting. This 'long and sometimes sorry story' tells also of the sheer pain and hard work of children forced to follow the style of the day, and of the reformers who have sought to simplify the teaching and learning of handwriting over the years. Illustrated throughout with examples from copybooks and personal handwriting from across the world, the book is a compelling historical record of techniques, styles and methods.
In this reflective autobiography, Rosemary Sassoon, a leading expert on handwriting and typography, looks back on her long and varied career, paying special attention to her unorthodox progression through a variety of fields. She details the route that took her from design to the educational and medical aspects of handwriting problems, then on to research and a PhD and finally to working in the area of legibility in type design. In telling the story of an unusual and unusually successful life, Sassoon takes up a number of philosophical questions about what it is that comes together to form our characters, and what role chance and coincidence play in our lives.

The Handy Helpers are excited about going to summer campthat is, everyone except Beth Anne. Her parents want her to go to a free camp for children with disabilities. Beth Anne begs them to let her go to camp with her friends. Finally, her parents admit they dont have enough money to pay the camp fees. With help from some of the seniors, the Handy Helpers are able to raise the money Beth Anne needs. So why has Beth Anne suddenly changed her mind and wants to go to the special camp after all? I would give this book a five-star rating because the children are so kind and humble. I love how Beth Anne is generous and selfless to everyone. I would recommend this book to anyone. I love how each story has a moral to them, and shows you how to be a great friend. - Morgan Damschen I think its so sweet how they all really need each other, but some of them dont see it at first because they are afraid of being hurt. But it all works out in the end. I love all the funny little things that happen to all the kids while reading about their escapades. Once I start reading, I dont want to put the book down. - Sadie Mullins I like Spike because hes a lot like me. I think hes funny, and I like how when he does do something he shouldnt, he gets it and makes it right. - Wylie Mullins Its cool to see the way they help each other and have fun doing it. I also like that this series brings up going to church, and that God plays an important role in their lives. Ive grown up going to church, and I can relate to the Handy Helpers making church a part of their lives. I think Handy Helpers is a great series to read and reread. - Sierra Mullins
There was a smell of blood mingling with the smell of burning that still clung about scorched timber and blackened thatch, and a great wailing rose from the watching crowd. The old High Priest dipped a finger in the blood and made a sign with it on Phaedrus's forehead, above the Mark of the Horse Lord." So began the ceremony that was to make young Phaedrus, ex-slave and gladiator, Horse Lord of the Dalriadain. Phaedrus had come a long way since the fight in the arena that gained him his freedom. He had left behind his old Roman life and identity and had entered another, more primitive, world—that of the British tribes in the far north. In this world of superstition and ancient ritual, of fierce loyalties and intertribal rivalry, Phaedrus found companionship and love, and something more—a purpose and a meaning to his life as he came fully to understand the significance of the Mark of the Horse Lord. First published in 1965, The Mark of the Horse Lord, set in second-century Britain, has been acclaimed by many readers as the finest of Rosemary Sutcliff's many novels, imparting true insight into the nature of leadership, identity, heroism, loyalty, violence, and sacrifice.
′The book fulfils its purpose admirably...[It] should be required reading for all Primary and Secondary headteachers - they lead the policy making in schools′ - Journal of the Writing Equipment Society `This excellent new text from the handwriting specialist Rosemary Sassoon will be of great interest to secondary school SENCOs and a range of other staff supporting children who are experiencing difficulties with handwriting′ - SENCO Update A considerable proportion of pupils leave primary school unable to write well enough to deal with the demands of secondary school. This innovative new book aims to help teachers and SENCOs to work alongside pupils to help them address their own difficulties. The book has three parts: Part one explores the various issues which underpin any discussion of handwriting: letterforms; the pros and cons of handwriting models; how to help children write at speed; writing posture; pens and pen hold; left-handedness; talking to parents; and some of the common causes of handwriting problems. Part two presents a series of examples of handwriting in photocopiable form, aimed principally at the pupils but with full teacher support, designed to show pupils a range of handwriting problems, helping them them to self-diagnose and work towards improvement. Each page offers practical tips and help for pupils with difficulties. All of the photocopiable material is also provided in electronic format on the companion website. Part three sets out a diagnostic technique for teachers to follow, outlining three approaches to tackling handwriting problems: a quick, small-group assessment; providing one-to-one help; and working with a whole class. Each approach is outlined in detail, offering advice on effective observation, procedures to follow in giving appropriate practical help to pupils, and how to assess progress. Part three also offers guidelines for designing checklists, and the role of surveys and research. Authoritative, wide-ranging and full of practical help, this book will be particularly useful for secondary teachers, secondary SENCOs and teaching support staff. Rosemary Sassoon is an independent consultant and lecturer, based in Sevenoaks, Kent. She is the author of Handwriting: The Way to Teach it, Paul Chapman Publishing, 2003.

This novel traces a year in the life of Clare MacMillan, who is happily married and lives in Cape Town. Largely through the consciousness of Clare, the story is told of the ups and downs, the joys and sorrows that occur over the period of a year in the life of her family. This eventful year encompasses momentous family events, during which Clare needs to hold her nerve and maintain her balance. Her Christian faith is at the centre of her life, and sustains her, alongside the love of her husband and two sons. It is the permutations in the lives of these four family members that give the novel its drama and intensity. The narrative weaves easily through the different seasons of the year, keeping and engaging our interest all the way through. While the ending of the novel may not be conventional, it is ultimately life-affirming, and we are left with a positive feeling. We are moved by the love felt and shown between the characters, and by their courage and generosity of spirit, especially that of Clare as she consistently holds her family together. The young men Jerome and Matthew have their own narratives which are interwoven with those of their parents. The reader is drawn to all the characters with their dramas and melodramas. Ultimately faith triumphs over the events that challenge it, and hope helps overcome loss. It is a positive story of love and courage, faith and hope.
This book was written to explain a situation where those who seemed to have everything became only dust to be swept into the sea. Or so it seemed, but that dust had life within it and was to sow another future in another land.
