Sequestered within the heart of a cosmopolitan city is an exotic world—a place where diamonds, astronomically priced, are bought and sold on the strength of a handshake, and business disputes are resolved according to ancient Jewish principles of arbitration. Yet it is also a modern industry facing the same fundamental global changes affecting all businesses today. In Diamond Stories, Renée Rose Shield leads us into the unexamined realm of wholesale diamond traders in New York. Related to several well-respected traders, she had unprecedented access to a society normally closed to outside inquiry. Here she deftly blends her personal relationship and her anthropological training to provide an insightful exploration of this tradition-bound industry, the new challenges it faces, and the ways both industry and individuals adapt to and endure change.Shield begins with a fascinating history of diamond mining, combining the story of the De Beers cartel, the role of Jews in the trade, and the part diamonds have played both in war and liberation. Throughout, she incorporates commentary by current diamond traders. Succeeding chapters explore the evolving nature of both the global trade and the New York diamond district. Shield takes a close look at the increasingly complex ethnic makeup of the district, illuminates the rarely documented work done by women, chronicles the resilient system of arbitration, and reveals the ways in which many traders work well into their eighties and nineties. Their long lives of work, cushioned by the trade's social environment, offer hints for successful aging in general.

In this “heady tale of romance, intrigue, and empowerment” (Pam Jenoff, New York Times bestselling author) during the Gilded Age, a determined and remarkable female journalist is determined to uncover the truth of the legendary Hope Diamond—from the New York Times bestselling author of Tiffany Blues. New York, 1910: A city of extravagant balls in Fifth Avenue mansions and poor immigrants crammed into crumbling Lower East Side tenements. A city where the suffrage movement is growing stronger every day, but most women reporters are still delegated to the fashion and lifestyle pages. But Vera Garland is set on making her mark in a man’s world of serious journalism. Shortly after the world-famous Hope Diamond is acquired for a record sum, Vera begins investigating rumors about schemes by its new owner, jeweler Pierre Cartier, to manipulate its value. Vera is determined to find the truth behind the notorious diamond and its mysterious curses, especially when her reporting puts her in the same orbit as a magazine publisher whose blackmailing schemes led to the death of her beloved father. Appealing to a young Russian jeweler for help, Vera is unprepared when she begins falling in love with him…and even more unprepared when she gets caught up in his deceptions and finds herself at risk of losing all she has worked so hard to achieve. “Vivid…[and] memorable” (Publishers Weekly), Cartier’s Hope is “a twisting tale of greed, revenge, and masked identities that put love and lives at risk. A fast-paced historical novel that shines with as much intrigue and mystery as the Hope Diamond itself” (Beatriz Williams, New York Times bestselling author).
A century ago the average person knew little to nothing about Eastern religions like Buddhism or Hinduism. But as globalization has brought the East and West together, eastern religious teachings and practices are rapidly influencing more and more western culture and beliefs. For example, in 1900 an estimated 1% of North Americans believed in Hindu or Buddhist reincarnation compared with approximately 25% of the U.S. population who believe in reincarnation today. With missionary zeal, Hindu gurus and Buddhist monks—such as the Dali Lama of Tibetan Buddhism and the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi of Transcendental Meditation—have traveled to the West to spread their beliefs. Some eastern religious beliefs and practices have been popularized in western culture through meditation, feng shui, martial arts, acupuncture, and Asian medicine. But the foundational beliefs of the eastern religious worldview remain in stark contrast to the Christian worldview. Christianity and Eastern Religions helps Christians understand their own beliefs as well as those of other religions. The pamphlet contains a detailed comparison of Christianity with 11 Eastern religions, including the major types of Hinduism and Buddhism. Christianity and Eastern Religions looks at the following topics:Key Beliefs on God and the purpose of life/salvationOrigins, founders, and other major historical figuresSacred writingsDistinctive practices and major celebrations denominations, and number of adherentsThe focus on the Dalai LamaProfiles of other Eastern religions, including Sikhism, Confucianism, Taoism, Shinto, as well as beliefs and practices such as reincarnation and karma, yoga, Eastern meditationThe growth of Eastern religions and what it means to ChristiansThis pamphlet also teaches the scriptural basis for why Christians Believe there is a God who is personal, powerful, and has a fatherly interest in our livesBelieve that there is only one physical life, and then the judgmentBelieve that man can never be good enough to evolve to perfection, inner peace, or pleasing GodBelieve that Christ is the only wayBelieve that Christ is the means to inner peace, blessedness, and pleasing God
People play bridge for different reasons. Some play bridge because of their competitive nature. Others play for the social interaction. Still others do it for mental exercise and health reasons. Some do it for sheer fun and enjoyment. And many play bridge for a combination of all of these. Regardless of your reason(s) for playing bridge, I think it is not unreasonable to assume that you would like to play better and with greater consistency and, even if winning is not necessarily your sole objective per se, to prevail occasionally at the table. Bridge---From A to Z is not for the beginning bridge player. Nor will reading this book make you a bridge superstar overnight. But if you read it judiciously and put its principles into practice, it will enable you to make that critical breakthrough, and literally take your game to the next level! In Bridge---From A to Z, I have enumerated 26 fundamental bridge principles, one for each letter of the alphabet, as the title suggests. To reinforce these principles, I have included numerous instructive bridge hands, almost all of which are taken from actual duplicate competition. As most bridge players know, duplicate bridge is a game of skill. However, as in most games, the elements of luck (both good and bad) are there. You might play easy hands against strong players or difficult hands against weaker players, or just the opposite may be the case.. The opponents may give you gifts. Or they may fix you. These are things over which we have little or no control. Conversely, there are things over which we do have control. And these are the things I have emphasized in this book. One does not need to have a background in higher mathematics to be a good bridge player. Certainly, some innate analytical ability is a big plus. Famous fictional detectives, such as Sherlock Holmes, Charlie Chan, and Ellery Queen, would probably have made great bridge players! But the things that are really important---listening, counting, focusing---are relatively simple to understand and execute. And the bottom line is that you have to do this yourself. No one---not a pro, a teacher, a mentor---can do them for you. In reading and absorbing the principles enumerated in Bridge---From A to Z, you will feel more confident in your own inherent ability to play bridge at a higher level. And in so doing, irrespective of your specific reason(s) for playing bridge, I believe you will derive more fun and enjoyment from this wonderful game we all love so much.
The study of lattice varieties is a field that has experienced rapid growth in the last 30 years, but many of the interesting and deep results discovered in that period have so far only appeared in research papers. The aim of this monograph is to present the main results about modular and nonmodular varieties, equational bases and the amalgamation property in a uniform way. The first chapter covers preliminaries that make the material accessible to anyone who has had an introductory course in universal algebra. Each subsequent chapter begins with a short historical introduction which sites the original references and then presents the results with complete proofs (in nearly all cases). Numerous diagrams illustrate the beauty of lattice theory and aid in the visualization of many proofs. An extensive index and bibliography also make the monograph a useful reference work.
