The late great Dubliner, Ronnie Drew, was six months into writing his biography when he was diagnosed with cancer. He had produced warm, witty and insightful material that made it clear that he was a wonderful writer as well as a great singer and storyteller. With the encouragement of his wife Deirdre and his family, he continued to think about the book and conducted a number of interviews to keep things ticking over until he was well enough to resume work on it. But sadly, much as he wanted to, Ronnie did not get to finish his story. However, with the whole-hearted co-operation of his daughter and son, Cliodhna and Phelim, it has been possible to put together Ronnie's work on his memoir along with his other writings, interviews with Cliodhna and Phelim, a wealth of photographs and other material from the family archive, and contributions from close friends, to create a book that is a wonderful portrait of, and a fitting and loving tribute to, the man Bono called 'the king of Ireland'.

In this revisionist study, Ronnie Ellenblum presents an interpretation of Crusader historiography that instead defines military and architectural relations between the Franks, local Christians, Muslims and Turks in terms of continuous dialogue and mutual influence. Through close analysis of siege tactics, defensive strategies and the structure and distribution of Crusader castles, Ellenblum relates patterns of crusader settlement to their environment and demonstrates the influence of opposing cultures on tactics and fortifications. He argues that fortifications were often built according to economic and geographic considerations rather than for strategic reasons or to protect illusory 'frontiers', and that Crusader castles are the most evident expression of a cultural dialogue between east and west.

Noel and Ronnie had eventful military experiences and Mary and Clare had hapless and very unfortunate marriages. Mrs Carroll on her own, performed miracles to create a home and an income for the family, in the absence if the father who had gone off and volunteered for the army. Many families paid a high price for the government policy of evacuation; ostensibly "for their protection" But none suffered more than the Carroll family. Ronnie's family, including his wife of 44 years, died around him. In sadness and desolation he foresaw only a lonely old age in front of him - then came a phone call from Australia

The challenges and disappointments this group faced while pursuing the vision of a better life are starkly revealed throughout this book through an in-depth analysis of documents that are only now being shared with the public. The anguish of the persecuted Jews left behind, and the terrible dilemma to encourage further immigration or not, is concurrently studied through the examination of potent communications between Eliashvilli and Jewish friends and family languishing in Georgia and seeking escape from their unrelenting hardships.
