True to her Southern storytelling roots, Ronda gathers together [her family's] stories-- plus those of Jeff Foxworthy, Alan Jackson, Dale Earnhardt, and Paula Deen, among others-- revealing how their dark times turned brighter than they could have imagined."--Front jacket flap.
Come to me all who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Jesus spoke these words centuries ago, yet still the invitation to approach God to receive rest for wearied and burdened hearts continues to beckon through the ages. The writer of Hebrews echoed those words of Jesus after his death on the cross and resurrection from the dead when he described the God of Christianity as, One who has been tempted in every way, just as we areyet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Approaching the Throne of Grace is an A to Z compilation of characters, each of them weary and burdened in ordinary ways. Some cry out to God and receive grace, while others receive grace not realizing they were in need. As each story is told, and the Throne of Grace is approached, grace is woven in and around a community of people. This forms a tapestry of Gods grace, poured out and lived out in the lives of each of the characters and the people whose lives they touch.
In Gods Word to a Widows Heart, author Ronda Little Martin provides daily inspiration from Gods Word for those recovering from personal loss. A widow herself, Martin is the cofounder of PHOEBE Connections, which connects widows for fellowship and service. This collection gathers the daily devotionals that she writes each day to the widows of PHOEBE Connections based upon her own devotion time with God. They are designed to inspire, strengthen, comfort, and encourage widows in their journey to overcome grief and to gain new identity and purpose in Jesus Christ. Martin spends the early part of each morning reading and personally applying Gods Word. She then shares whatever message of inspiration He gives her with the ladies of PHOEBE Connections via e-mail, social media, and the PHOEBE website. Therein, she seeks to fulfill Pauls command in 2 Corinthians 1:4 to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction through the comfort we ourselves receive from God. From Determine to Sing a New Song to Just Keep Asking, Gods Word to a Widows Heart can strike a chord with anyone who is dealing with profound, personal loss.
The journals of this well known Catholic writer detail the graces that sustained her during a mid-life crisis. It was in the year 1977 that I first started saving my journal entries. The excerpts from the journals (1977-1995) describe special graces and reflections as I staggered through more decades of my life--years that included a bout with breast cancer, the death of my parents, the suicide of our beloved son, and the death of my dear husband in 1993. (Excerpt from introduction) Dr, Chervin's journals are insightful, inspiring and challenging.

IN THE MIDST OF BI-POLAR DISORDER YOU'LL FIND A PRAISE The National Institute of Mental health estimates that 16.2 million U.S adults had at least one major depressive episode in 2015. This represents 6.7 percent of the U.S adult population. Depression is most common un ages 18-25 and in individuals belonging to two or more races. Women are twice as likely as men to have had a depressive episode. This is a day in time where it’s also effecting teenagers from the age of 12-16. The great nation of Israel lies in ruins, God's temple ransacked and plundered, His people consumed by Babylon. A once unparalleled nation is reduced to slaves, widows, and beggars, their god mocked as a jester. Kefira, a headstrong young Jew, struggles to survive in the empire of Persia, orphaned in the wake of her nation's destruction. No longer a child but not yet a woman, she has grown up with no home, dowry, or anything to call her own. Hopeless and destined for poverty, her prayers for deliverance seem to go unanswered—until she discovers a strange and beautiful red egg. Rakhshan, a mercenary, then intrudes upon her and her discovery, bringing with him allure, intrigue, and a hostile dragon. Despite the growing uncertainty of his allegiance, the miraculous occurs: from her relic hatches the most powerful creature in all the empires—a colossal dragon of Israel, the last of his kind. Her awe of him grows into a fierce love that will endanger her life, as she becomes the most critical piece in a game of power between nations, condemned to deceit, conspiracy, and marriage against her will. Her only moor against despair is the uncertain friendship of Rakhshan, and the eroding belief that her God still sees her, and the silent prayer that the miracle of her dragon will not cost her everything.
In late December 1788 a worried Spanish official in Mexico City set down his fears about a new and aggressive northern neighbor. Viceroy Manuel Antonio Florez offered a gloomy prediction about the future of Spanish-United States relations in the West. He already knew about the steady march of frontiersmen toward St. Louis and now came troubling word of Robert Gray's ship Columbia on the Northwest coast. All this seemed to fit a pattern, a design for Yankee expansion. "We ought not to be surprised," warned the viceroy, "that the English colonies of America, now being an independent Republic, should carry out the design of finding a safe port on the Pacific and of attempting to sustain it by crossing the immense country of the continent above our possessions of Texas, New Mexico, and California." Canadian fur merchants and Russian bureaucrats also viewed the young republic as a potential rival in the struggle for western dominion. The viceroy's vision of the future proved startlingly accurate. Within the next two decades an American president would authorize a federally funded expedition to find just the sort of transcontinental route Florez imagined. Equally important, a New York entrepreneur would propose and put into motion an ambitious plan to make the Northwest an American political and commercial empire. John Astor's Pacific Fur Company, with Astoria as its central post on the Columbia River, was Florez's nightmare come true. Astoria had long represented either a daring overland adventure or simply a failed trading venture. The Astorians surely had their share of adventure. And the Pacific Fur Company never brought its founder the profits he expected. But all those involved in the extensive enterprise knew it meant more. Thomas Jefferson once described Astoria as the "germ of a great, free and independent empire," believing that the entire American claim to the lands west of the Rockies rested on "Astor's settlement at the mouth of the Columbia." And John Quincy Adams, the expansionist-minded secretary of state, labeled then entire Northwest as "the empire of Astoria." This book seeks to explore Astoria as part of a large and complex struggle for national sovereignty in the Northwest. The Astorians and their rivals were always engaged in more than trading and trapping. They were advance agents of empire. -- from Preface

This is the first full-length biography of Elizabeth Palmer Peabody, one of the three notable Peabody sisters of Salem, Massachusetts, and sister-in-law of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Horace Marm. It traces the intricate private life and extraordinary career of one of nineteenth-century America's most important Transcendental writers and educational reformers. Peabody was a reformer devoted to education in the broadest, and yet most practical, senses. She saw the classroom as mediating between the needs of the individual and the claims of society. She taught in her own private schools and was an assistant in Bronson Alcott's Temple School. In her contacts with Ralph Waldo Emerson's Transcendental circle in the 1830s, and as publisher of the famous Dial and other imprints, she took a mediating position once more, claiming the need for historical knowledge to balance the movement's stress on individual intuition. She championed antislavery, European liberal revolutions, Spiritualism, and, in her last years, the Paiute Indians. She was, as Theodore Parker described her, the Boswell of her age.

When people think of Lockhart today, they think of barbecue. However, Lockhart's history and culture are much more. As Spanish land grants were awarded to Anglos to settle this virtually uninhabited territory, they came to what is now Lockhart because of the many springs, live oaks, rolling hills, and good soil. First were Native Americans, like the friendly Tonkawa tribe, and then in 1840, a few Anglo families settled on Plum Creek, six miles from today's town center. In August 1840, the legendary Battle of Plum Creek ended the Great Comanche Raid, clearing the way for further settlement. Farming and ranching led to a melting pot of ethnic entrepreneurs who opened related businesses around the square of the Caldwell County seat. Cattle and cotton became kings and, even today, remain leading agribusinesses. Dubbed the "Barbecue Capital of Texas" by the Texas Legislature, Lockhart can boast that over 1.2 million people visit annually to eat barbecue.
