Exceptional Children: Integrating Research and Teaching provides a com prehensive introduction to the constantly changing area of special educa tion. The book is research-based, and its title reflects our opinion regarding the important link between research and classroom practice. There is one feature of Exceptional Children: Integrating Research and Teaching that warrants attention and perhaps justification; it was written specifically to address the graduate student or sophisticated undergraduate student mar ket. As such, the book is written at a higher level and with a greater concept density than typical introductory special education texts. We feel that this type of book is very much needed and will be received favorably by the special education community. There are also several unique features of Exceptional Children: Integrat ing Research and Teaching that we feel will be quite valuable. First, we have emphasized the area of teaching practices and not simply included basic facts about definitions, characteristics, and causes. Although some intro ductory texts include information about teaching considerations, that area is not discussed as in depth as it is in our text. We feel that it is important that readers not only understand the educational needs of exceptional chil dren, but also can identify the best educational practices to meet those needs.

Rev. Thomas Christie was the third Canadian minister to accept a call to present the Gospel of Jesus to Indentured East Indians in Trinidad W. Indies. The Foreign Mission Board of the Synod of Nova Scotia had already sent Rev. John Morton (1868) and Rev. Kenneth Grant (1870) to that island. Rev. Christie was posted in the third Mission Field in the Couva Ward in the County of Caroni, in 1874. Three estate schools were already built and opened and he served as corresponding Manager to these. As an evangelist he preached to East Indians, white Presbyterians and to emancipated Blacks. At one time he trained teachers in pedagogy. In his second term a Presbyterian church was built. He did ground-breaking work in school management and in evangelism. Although his ministry was short-- a little over nine years, yet his faithful works under challenging circumstances are grounds for numbering him as a pioneer Presbyterian. Excerpts from his many letters are quoted and these give readers an understanding of his expected joys and unexpected sorrows.

With access to recently available firsthand accounts by Chinese, Japanese, British, and American witnesses and previously top secret U.S. intelligence records, Spector tells for the first time the fascinating story of the deadly confrontations that broke out–or merely continued–in Asia after peace was proclaimed at the end of World War II. Under occupation by the victorious Allies, this part of the world was plunged into new power struggles or back into old feuds that in some ways were worse than the war itself. In the Ruins of Empire also shows how the U.S. and Soviet governments, as they secretly vied for influence in liberated lands, were soon at odds. At the time of the peace declaration, international suspicions were still strong. Joseph Stalin warned that “crazy cutthroats” might disrupt the surrender ceremony in Tokyo Bay. Die-hard Japanese officers plotted to seize the emperor’s palace to prevent an announcement of surrender, and clandestine relief forces were sent to rescue thousands of Allied POWs to prevent their being massacred. In the Ruins of Empire paints a vivid picture of the postwar intrigues and violence. In Manchuria, Russian “liberators” looted, raped, and killed innocent civilians, and a fratricidal rivalry continued between Chiang Kai-shek’s regime and Mao’s revolutionaries. A rare memoir of serving as an AOP pilot—one of the most daring and dangerous jobs in World War II. Includes maps and photos. In April 1943, a young officer arrived at Penshurst to join C Flight, 653 Squadron. He was no ordinary pilot, and this was no ordinary RAF outfit. Lyell Munro was a soldier and 653 was an Air Observation Post Squadron whose pilots were Royal Artillery and whose ground crew were RAF. AOP pilots were expert gunners, skilled flyers, and incurable rule breakers. Flying from airstrips just behind the front lines, without armament and often with no parachute, they controlled the fire of hundreds of guns and their enemies learned to dread the sight of the little green Austers in the skies above the battlefield. An incautious movement, a puff of smoke or a chance flash of reflected sunlight could bring tons of high explosives raining down. They flew alone without ground control, scanning the skies constantly while they directed the guns. Closing at over 250mph, an attacking ME 109 left no time for indecision. Reactions had to be instinctive and evasive action instant. Failure was fatal. After the war ended, the survivors went back into civilian life and few histories mention them or what they did. Lyell’s is one of only two personal accounts that are known to exist, and it is likely that there will be no more. Written for his family and his comrades in C Flight, Above the Battle is a story told without heroics, but with a deep affection for the men with whom he flew and worked.

Ronald Bruce Lantz (Ron) and Donna have been married more than fifty-five years. They reside in Austin, TX. where they have lived for the last twenty-five years. Dr. Lantz holds BS and MS degrees in Chemical Engineering from Iowa State University. He started working for California Research Corporation (Chevron), in the San Francisco, CA area and, after receiving his PhD, worked for Jersey Production Research in Tulsa, OK and Esso Production Research in Houston. Both the latter companies are now part of Exxon. After starting an environmental firm, Intera, and leading it for almost twenty-five years, he retired. He and his three sons own a family venture capital investment firm in which he remains active. He treasures his time with his wife, his sons and daughter-in-laws, his grandchildren, as well as his many school, golf and rotary friends.
