Spirit Quest 1969: Tripping Through Lands of Enchantment, is the true tale of a disaffected suburban kid hitchhiking through western America to discover the counterculture communes in 1969. In 1969, when he was seventeen years old, Ronald dropped out of high school near Chicago to explore the counterculture in the Rocky Mountains. After taking a huge dose of LSD, he wandered into the Navajo reservation seeking supernatural visions, meeting missionaries and students of Indian lore. He joined a group marriage commune in Taos at the height of the Hippie-Chicano conflict. The domineering personalities he found in communal life disappointed him, but the concept of living together in non-monogamous families inspired him to continue working to improve the concept. Low on cash, Ron decided to return to the city to earn enough money to continue exploring the street scene and New Left world in Chicago and New York, which will soon appear as a follow-up book.
The suggestion that quantum-mechanical tunnelling might be a significant factor in some chemical reactions was first made fifty years ago by Hund, very soon after the principles of wave mechanics had been established by de Broglie, Schrodinger and Heisenberg, and similar ideas were put forward during the following thirty years by a number of authors. It was realised from the beginning that such effects would be particularly prominent in reactions involving the movement of protons or hydrogen atoms, and both theoretical and experimental work received a powerful stimulus in the discovery of deuterium in 1932. During the last twenty years theoretical predictions about the tunnel effect have been supported by an increasing body of experimental evidence, derived especially from studies of hydrogen isotope effects. The present book presents an attempt to summarize this evidence and to indicate the main lines of the basic theory. Details of mathematical manipu lation are restricted mainly to Chapter 2 and the Appendices, and many readers may prefer to confine themselves to the results obtained. The main emphasis has been on the kinetics of chemical reactions involving the transfer of protons, hydrogen atoms or hydride ions, although Chapter 6 gives an account of the role of the tunnel effect in molecular spectra, and Chapter 7 makes some mention of tunnelling in solid state phenomena, biological processes and the electrolytic discharge of hydrogen. Only passing references have been made to tunnelling by electrons.
The major purpose of this book is to review the evidence supporting the concept that intrinsic cell survival programs can be activated by a variety of mildly noxious stimuli or pharmacologic agents to confer protection against the deleterious effects of ischemia/reperfusion (I/R). We begin with a discussion of the concept of hormesis (a term used most extensively in the toxicologic literature which refers to biphasic cellular responses that depend on concentration or intensity of a stimulus), review the seminal studies that led to the discovery of the cardioprotective effects of ischemic preconditioning, and outline its therapeutic potential (Chapter 1). This is followed by a summary of our current understanding of the mechanisms of I/R injury (Chapter 2), as this provides several points of intervention in limiting postischemic tissue injury that may be targeted by the adaptive programs invoked by conditioning stimuli. Chapters 3 and 4 focus on the mechanisms underlying ischemic pre-, post-, and remote conditioning, which establishes the mechanistic rationale for development of pharmacologic conditioning strategies that may mimic the remarkably powerful effects of ischemic conditioning (and are covered in Chapter 5). Lifestyle interventions, including exercise, caloric restriction, and consumption of alcoholic beverages and/or phytochemicals, that may induce hormetic responses will also be reviewed in this chapter. While the promise for conditioning as a therapeutic approach is enormous, there are obstacles to its practical application in patients, which are covered in Chapter 6. The final chapter (Chapter 7) examines the extension of our mechanistic understanding of the signaling pathways invoked by conditioning stimuli into the realm of gene therapy and to the preservation of stem cell viability in the harsh ischemic environment as natural translational outgrowths of preconditioning into therapeutics.

Since the publication of my previous monograph in 1974, important progress has been made in the broad area of calcium research, partic ularly as it pertains to secretory phenomena. The significant advance in methodology, while widening the scope of our knowledge, has caused research in this particular area to become more and more specialized. It has, therefore, become increasingly difficult for researchers to consider and evaluate work outside their own areas of specialization and to com prehend the field from a broad perspective. While many valuable re views on the importance of calcium in cellular function are being pro duced, they have not attempted to pull together all of the existing knowledge into a more general narrative. This volume brings together experimental data and theories from diverse sources, and attempts to synthesize into a broad conceptual framework the massive amount of specialized information that presently exists in the general area of cal cium metabolism and the secretory process. It is impossible in a book of this length to discuss specific references in detail and still maintain readability, so generalizations must be made.

This volume is based in part upon the proceedings of the Calcium Theme held during the 67th Annual Meeting of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, which took place in Chicago, AprillO-lS, 1983. The American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics had the primary responsibility for organizing the scientific program with the assistance of other member societies, including the American Physiology Society, American Association of Pathologists, and American Institute of Nutrition. The purpose of the Calcium Theme was to review progress in the diverse areas of investigation bearing on the ubiquitous role of calcium in biological systems. In addition to contributions from those participating in the Theme, this volume also includes a number of invited papers that were added to fill certain voids in topics covered. The authors were selected because they are investigators active in the mainstream of their particular research area, possessing the acumen to analyze cogently not only their own recent findings but also to relate these findings to their respective area. New information as well as reviews of current concepts generally highlight the individual contributions. Undoubtedly, some readers may argue with the emphasis made and/or the conclusions reached on individual topics. In such cases, other volumes will hopefully provide a forum for alternative points of view. Due to the broad scope of subjects covered and the large number of contributions, the papers have been arranged in three sections.
