The relationship between God and Jesus is the means and the model for God’s renewal of humanity. Jesus is the “firstborn” of God’s future human society, but he will not be the last. God’s purpose is to have a family made up of the completed and glorified humans we were always meant to become. What an exciting future God is planning for us! Human potential in the hands of God exceeds our wildest imagination. Although Jesus’s roles and titles are often seen as separating him from the rest of us humans, they actually embed him deeply in our humanity. Jesus was, is, and always will be one of us. Becoming completed humans like Jesus is a road we are called to travel, as we learn to increasingly depend upon God’s promise to provide the gifts of forgiveness and empowerment. Let’s take the journey together with our brother who is “the Son of God” and “the Son of Man (Humanity).”

Our sins against Jews can be just as horrendous when they flow from our ignorance, arrogance, and privilege as when they are the expression of outright prejudices. This book is a plea for Christians to live up to the challenge Jesus, as well as the great writing prophets of the Old Testament, set for us. We must learn to tell the truth rather than hiding from it, to shed the tears of broken hearts, choose turning from our old ways to new paths, and practice trusting that God will bless the efforts. Although the author believes it is important to know that the mostly Jewish writers of the New Testament were not rejecting their Jewish roots, and certainly were not anti-Semitic, he acknowledges that church history ensures that there is almost no other way to hear some passages today. We can choose a new path that honors Jesus and honors all we owe the Jewish people past and present.

This book offers a historical-materialist reading of the opening chapters of the book of Genesis in an attempt to revive their potential to engage people in truthful discussions about power and pleasure. For the past two millennia, biblical stories have been told and discussed in countless settings; whether one lives in Europe or in a country that was colonized by Europeans, the biblical symbolic universe remains present. This book offers a method to explore the social and political meanings of its most theological content by visiting two historical settings in which biblical modes of expression intersected with the demands of an economic-political process: Jerusalem and its province during the Persian period (5th–4th centuries bce) and Brazil of the early colonial period (16th century ce). Though distant in time and space, both were moments of comparable transformation: individuals with financial resources and military power arrived from the East to seize control over lands and means of production, subjugating the population to a distant king. By turning to these two historical settings, Ron Naiweld examines how the narratives of Genesis resonated in these environments, how they were used to legitimize imperial power structures, and how they opened these structures to scrutiny. More than 1,000 men held the rank of brigadier general during the Civil War, but a surprising number remain unknown to all but the most ardent scholar.
