The gift of reading. There could not be a greater Christmas gift. Throughout history, I ask you what circumstances have compelled any and all would-be authors to put quills-to-parchments (or, in more recent generations, put fingertips-to-keyboards) to create their miasma of pages to be collected together and called a book? It s a good question and I haven t a clue as to any short, finite answer. I only know that there are lots and lots and lots of compelling circumstances. In my particular case, at an early age I found myself interested in the How? and Why? of things I had read about or heard about or saw. No doubt there have been others like me throughout history who have bumbled, stumbled and fumbled their way through life because they were looking through curious eyes - and not necessarily through practical, comprehending eyes. Let me tell you, one stumbles frequently when trying to get somewhere while looking upward rather than downward. But it is still a trip worth taking .and while looking upward. In the late 1940s I heard on our family entertainment center (which in the late1940s was only an RCA Victor radio) Gene Autry singing the song, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and I was fascinated by the lyrics of the song. Yet I wanted to know, But why did Rudolph s nose glow? No answers to that question were forthcoming and the question remained in the catacombs of my memory for all the years thereafter. Once I had retired from my career and began to write serialized Christmas stories, I plucked the glowing nose dilemma from its dormancy and began to ask, What if . In order to write this book s first Christmas story, The First Christmas Glowing, I felt compelled to examine (and for story purposes, hypothetically answer) the following What if s : - What if, say a hundred years ago or so, there had been a long-distance message runner making deliveries amongst neighboring villages in the Great Rift Valley of eastern Africa and what if, on one of his runs, the message-runner made a substantive discovery? - What if that substantive discovery, as found on the slope of an old volcano crater, would change Christmases forever and ever? - What if that discovery had something to do with the wing-flap speed of a certain kind of insect? - What if the message-runner put his substantive discovery into a small earthen jar and what if that jar over the course of the next sixty years found its way to a once well-traveled trunk in the home of the brother of a traveling circus entertainer named Maximillian? - What if Maximillian was the uncle of a young girl (his brother s daughter) who also lived in that home? - What if Uncle Max s young niece found the jar and years later would find herself positioned and prepared to come to the aid of one of the most important Christmasses of the 20th Century? - What if there are several other adventures along the way involving magic tricks, singing wolves, a Japanese fishing boat , and an intuitivie Inuit weatherman? - And, yes, what if there is a happy ending, and it is one that you know very well and certainly have even sung about? In order to write this book s second Christmas story, A Long-Distance Christmas Greeting, I had to answer a whole raft of completely different What if s . And that is because the second story has resulted from my memory of an incident that occurred in the mid 1950s. The remembered incident occurred somewhere on the east coast of the United States and involved some historical society or a university or a city council or something-or-other creating a time capsule, filled with objects. The objects were something like tooth paste, Argyle sox, automobile hubcaps, and square-dance instructions, all to be hermetically sealed, buried, and not opened for a hundred years or so... something to provide clear evidence as to how the residents of our country lived back in the 1950s. Made available to the average person via the Internet, handheld devices, and through ordinary objects all around us, expertise will become democratized. Everything will change when anyone has access to expertise in any field and new things will be possible. The democratization of expertise is the foundation on which our society’s revolutions will be built over the next half-century. This book discusses societal and cultural revolutions throughout history brought about by the adoption of new technology and gives brief histories of human cognitive augmentation and artificial intelligence. In the coming cognitive systems era, humans, by collaboratively partnering with cognitive systems, will together achieve expert-level performance—synthetic expertise—with humans performing some of the cognitive processing and cognitive systems performing some. As the capabilities of cognitive systems improve over time, the balance of thinking will shift from being mostly human to mostly artificial. This book introduces the Levels of Cognitive Augmentation to describe this shift. Drawing from previous research in cognitive systems and intelligent agent theory, the knowledge stores required for expertise are identified in a Knowledge Level description of expertise. This book introduces a new abstract level, called the Expertise Level to describe the skills needed for expertise. It has been brought to my attention that not everyone knows what a gamekeeper really is, in fact, while going over some thoughts on the subject before I started writing, I now realize how complex and difficult this task is going to be. He is hired by the Laird, the owner of an estate, to protect all the game from predators and poachers (people who take game illegally). An estate may consist of hundreds of square miles and a few dozen farms also owned by the laird and leased to individual farmers. In the case of very large estates such as this, it would be necessary for him to hire as many as six gamekeepers each with his own section, or beat, to look after. In addition to a small wage, he would also have the use of a house owned by the estate with firewood, coal, milk, and oatmeal included, for as long as he remained in the employment of the laird. A gamekeepers day would start at daybreak and end at dusk seven days a week, but he did have some time to himself during the day when all his work was taken care of. When he was not out setting or checking his traps or snares for rabbits, he would be in his workshop repairing them. He had to maintain about forty traps and twice as many snares. He made all the snares from scratch, including the wooden pegs. He made all his bolt nets too. These were about three feet square with a drawstring woven in and out round the perimeter to which was attached a peg. He usually made them in the long winter evenings, sitting by the fire and listening to the radio. He was also required to protect the nests of game birds, such as partridge, pheasant, and grouse from predators, the worst offender being the hooded crow, a very wily bird that would nest in the tall pine trees. The gamekeeper would build a hide close to the nest and sit and wait sometimes for hours until the crow returned and he could shoot it. Weasels and badgers also created havoc on the birds nests and had to be controlled too. Poachers were always a problem. When he would find some strange traps or snares on his rounds, he would leave them intact and find a secluded spot nearby and wait until the poacher returned and apprehend him. His traps would be confiscated and sent on his way with a swift kick on the posterior and the threat of death should he ever be caught there again. The police were seldom involved. The gamekeeper was well respected in the community and was classed with the doctor, minister, schoolteacher, and policeman and was regarded as one of the main sources of information in rural areas since there were no telephones and few folks had radio. We had a radio (a Christmas gift from the laird), so he was much sought after for information regarding the progress of the war with the Germans. Anyone could depend on him for comfort or advice in any situation, and he was always a willing giver.

About the AuthorRon McLachlan was born in 1951, and now lives and writes in Wemyss Bay, a small coastal town in the west of Scotland. Ron has published a trilogy of novels, and has won, or been shortlisted, in a number of international, national, and local short story competitions. He has written another novel entitled The Saviour, and, in 2005, began a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing, in New Jersey.
