He flew dozens of dangerous ground-attack missions over occupied Europe through bad weather, heavy flak, and enemy fighters before being shot down in early 1945 and ending the war in a German prisoner of war camp. Ron Pottinger served for six years during World War II, most of it flying combat missions in the Royal Air Force. He lives in England.

Arrangements have numerous applications in a wide range of areas – examples include geographic information systems, robot motion planning, statistics, computer-assisted surgery and molecular biology. Implementing robust algorithms for arrangements is a notoriously difficult task, and the CGAL arrangements package is the first robust, comprehensive, generic and efficient implementation of data structures and algorithms for arrangements of curves. This book is about how to use CGAL two-dimensional arrangements to solve problems. The authors first demonstrate the features of the arrangement package and related packages using small example programs. They then describe applications, i.e., complete standalone programs written on top of CGAL arrangements used to solve meaningful problems – for example, finding the minimum-area triangle defined by a set of points, planning the motion of a polygon translating among polygons in the plane, computing the offset polygon, finding the largest common point sets under approximate congruence, constructing the farthest-point Voronoi diagram, coordinating the motion of two discs moving among obstacles in the plane, and performing Boolean operations on curved polygons. The book contains comprehensive explanations of the solution programs, many illustrations, and detailed notes on further reading, and it is supported by a website that contains downloadable software and exercises. It will be suitable for graduate students and researchers involved in applied research in computational geometry, and for professionals who require worked-out solutions to real-life geometric problems. It is assumed that the reader is familiar with the C++ programming-language and with the basics of the generic-programming paradigm.

If you search on references to Ron Silliman in Against Expression: An Anthology of Conceptual Writing, edited by Craig Dworkin and Kenneth Goldsmith (Northwestern University Press, 2011), you find the following: table of contents, pg. xv, Ron Silliman, 531, from Sunset Debris, 28; In the opening to Great Expectations: A Novel (New York: Grove, 1983), Kathy Acker appropriates, deforms, summarizes, and rewrites passages from Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations and Pierre Guyotat’s Eden, Eden, Eden to solve the equation plagiarism + pornography = autobiography. For the formulation of this equivalence, see Ron Silliman‘s “E-Mail Interview” (Quarry West 34 [1998]: 13). 53; as is the entirety of Ron Silliman‘s “Sunset Debris.” In an interview with Tom Beckett, Silliman explains that “every sentence is supposed to remind the reader of his or her inability to respond” (The Difficulties 2, no. 2 [1985], 45). But the work has in fact provoked rather than stifled response. In the Tapeworm Foundry, Daren Wershler proposes that one “write a poem answering in order of occurrence all of the questions posed by ron silliman in sunset debris.” Following a pioneering attempt by Michael Waltuch and Alan Davies’s poem “?s to .s”, which set out to answer all of the interrogatives in Silliman‘s related Chinese Notebook, several poets have taken up Wershler’s challenge, including Arielle Brousse (in Tapeworm: A Collaborative Exhibition [Philadelphia: Kelly Writers House, 2008]) and Christian Bök in Busted Sirens (in Interval(le)s 2.2–3.1 [2008–9]: 142–47. 117; Christian Bök composed Busted Sirens by feeding the questions from Ron Silliman‘s “Sunset Debris” to the XML-dialect software agent Alicebot (Artificial Linguistic Internet Computer Entity Robot). 222; Robert Fitterman here performs a grammatical analysis of Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises, eliminating all sentences that do not begin with the first person singular pronoun. The result reads very much like Ron Silliman‘s “Berkeley” (This 5 [Winter 1974]: n.p.) 415; Little and much / Low and high / Rotten and fresh. —Ron Silliman 418; Other examples of homophonic translation include Ron Silliman‘s rendition of Rilke’s Duino Elegies as “Do We Know Ella Cheese?” (Roof 5, 1978) 531; John Cage claimed that he often found questions more interesting than answers. Ron Silliman, echoing Cage’s sentiment, constructed an entire section of his book The Age of Huts (New York: Roof, 1986) from nearly forty pages of questions. Ranging from the personal to the found to the absurd, Silliman‘s gesture serves to displace the authorial figure, as well as any notion of a stabilized, centered text. The doctrine of "free trade" is second only to that of "free markets" in undergirding ideological support for our current global economic structures and rules. From David Ricardo’s "comparative advantage principle" to James Meade’s Neoclassical or mainstream economics proof of self-adjusting free trade equilibrium, the free trade doctrine has had a lasting and destructive hold on Neoclassical economic thinking since its inception. The Global Free Trade Error provides a detailed analysis of these foundational models and counter-poses these to alternative Neo-Marxist "unequal exchange" models of global trade and finance. In the first part of the book the three core free trade models alluded to above are respectively demonstrated to be: overdetermined, inapplicable, and infeasible. In particular, Ricardo’s parable is shown to support managed trade rather than free trade as Ricardo and two centuries of economic texts have claimed. In the second part of the book, unequal exchange analyses of global trade are shown to provide logically coherent and useful insights into global trade and finance. In the third and final part of the book, this unequal exchange perspective is used, within a general "demand and cost" setting, to develop a set of global managed trade principles for a more equitable and sustainable world trade regime. This book will be of great interest to those who study political economy, history of economic thought, and international trade, including trade agreements and tariffs.
