In Beasts of Burden, Ron Broglio examines how lives—human and animal—were counted in rural England and Scotland during the Romantic period. During this time, Britain experienced unprecedented data collection from censuses, ordinance surveys, and measurements of resources, all used to quantify the life and productivity of the nation. It was the dawn of biopolitics—the age in which biological life and its abilities became regulated by the state. Borne primarily by workers and livestock, nowhere was this regulation felt more powerfully than in the fields, commons, and enclosures. Using literature, art, and cultural texts of the period, Broglio explores the apparatus of biopolitics during the age of Adam Smith and Thomas Malthus. He looks at how data collection turned everyday life into citizenship and nationalism and how labor class poets and artists recorded and resisted the burden of this new biopolitical life. The author reveals how the frictions of material life work over and against designs by the state to form a unified biopolitical Britain. At its most radical, this book changes what constitutes the central concerns of the Romantic period and which texts are valuable for understanding the formation of a nation, its agriculture, and its rural landscapes.

Henry Louis Wallace terrorized Charlotte, North Carolina, from May 1992 to March 1994. Wallace preyed on lower economic-class Black women between 17 and 35 years old. He knew most of his victims, some through his job at Taco Bell, and gained their trust with his friendly demeanor and gentle nature—concealing a monster fueled by drug abuse and rage against women. A rarity in that he was an African American serial killer, his murderous rampage spurred controversy throughout the city. Community members accused local police of ignoring the murders because of the victims' race. Wallace attended the funerals of many of his victims and offered condolences to families. The ensuing investigation became the largest in North Carolina’s history. Wallace was eventually found guilty and convicted of nine counts of murder, but he admitted to more killings while incarcerated; he is potentially responsible for anywhere from 20 to 90 deaths of Black women. Wallace continues to appeal and awaits his execution at Central Prison in Raleigh. Ron was a Sunday school superintendent for more than twenty years and was the leader of a Vacation Bible School for almost fifteen years. This year will mark sixty-six years of serving as a lay supply preacher. He continues to work on community events and projects that many of his former students are involved in. Many of these former students are good friends, as some are approaching their late sixties. Family is extremely important to Ron. He and his wife Cathy, to whom he has been married for fifty-five years this summer, are enjoying their new home in Mount Forest. They are blessed by their three children and spouses, who provide Christian leadership in their environments—and then there are the fourteen grandbabies!

I grew up during the hardships of World War II in a family with limited income and a father devoted to racing pigeons left behind by two brothers who didn’t return from war. Life was tough. My holidays at a fishing village dictated subsistence living and improvisation. With limited schooling my cousins learnt to build canoes, sailing boats, launches and two weatherboard homes designed with pencil sketches. My grandfather surprised me when thirteen years old with seven magic words that helped shape my attitude to life. From being shy, my athleticism led to a range of different sports, and I played with and against some of the greats, including three Australian legends. As a young engineer I earned the respect of my technical staffs and rose to be regarded as a technical expert. This became a stumbling block for further promotion. I found my sport, coaching, life experience, and the study of creativity, held the leadership skills which enabled me to reach the fast lane of business. The financial rewards, the opportunity to experience other cultures and see some world treasures, were balanced by stress, health problems, and lost family time. I believe my story and what I’ve learnt show how to improve motivation, learn new skills, and enhance self-esteem.

We must recognize the importance of water for Great Basin ecosystems and the need to manage it better, and we must acknowledge how rich the Great Basin is in natural history. Salt lakes, wherever they occur, are valuable and provide critically important habitat for migratory water birds, which are unfortunately under threat from upstream water diversions and climate change. Larson’s book will help people understand that the Great Basin is unique and that wise stewardship is necessary to keep it unspoiled.
