Sam Blain and Ben Fisher migrated to Australia from Great Britain in mid-1871 to work on the steam tug the Young Australian, on the Roper River during the construction of the overland telegraph line. Years later, the families moved to Winton, where Sam and Ben worked as shearers at Oondooroo shed and were involved in the shearers strikes of the 1890s. After many years of hardship, World War I arrived. Ben Fisher's son Jack headed back to the Roper River while Sam Blain's son, Jimmy, who had always been interested in the wings of flight, went over to England to join the RAF. When Jimmy arrived home from the war, he found he had a crippled son. This is the life story of the crippled boy, Johnny Blain, who struggled through everyday life but strode to follow in his father's footsteps in the wings of flight.

Combating hate speech offline and online: a new tool to help young people and educators to confront, dismantle and replace hateful narratives. Online hate speech has become a major form of human rights abuse, with serious, sometimes tragic consequences, both online and offline. Hate speech cannot be allowed to proliferate without being challenged and exposed in its nature: prejudicial views on social groups combined with fake news which feed phobias and fears, seem attractive as narratives. Narratives give a meaning to information presented because they connect with what people believe, or want to believe in.Their widespread presence online accredits their claims for legitimacy. But narratives are rarely the truth and never the whole truth. When they are used to oppress people, as in hate speech, the fundamentals of a pluralistic and democratic society are undermined, and the lives and dignity of people are at risk. Counter narratives are thus needed to discredit and deconstruct the narratives on which hate speech is based. Alternative narratives are also needed to reinforce positive values and perspectives which support human rights and democratic citizenship, such as solidarity, respect for diversity, freedom and equality. Young people need to occupy online public space with positive narratives based on hope and love. This manual presents communicative and educational approaches and tools for youth and other human rights activists to develop their own counter and alternative narratives to hate speech. It is designed for working with young people from the age of 13, and is based on the principles of human rights education and youth participation. Anyone can take action against speech. By providing insights into hate speech and human rights, and a methodology for producing counter narratives, We Can makes that action easier, more effective and positive. The Council of Europe launched the No Hate Speech Movement campaign to mobilise young people for human rights online and to combat hate speech. Education plays a central role in the campaign. This manual complements Bookmarks - A manual for combating hate speech online through human rights education, also published by the Council of Europe.

Rejecting essentialist notions of language and culture, this Element demonstrates how inscriptions of identity such as race, ethnicity, nationality, and class can be used to critically examine the dynamics of situated intercultural encounters and to understand how such interactions can index competing and colluding ideologies. By examining identity research from different parts of the world, it casts a light on how identities are performed in diverse intercultural contexts and discusses research methodologies that have been employed to examine identity in intercultural communication.

An unplanned stop in a town they hadn't previously visited develops a relationship with an unorthodox young couple who create an even stronger desire in Bob and his bride to look more seriously toward moving to the area. It is while struggling to justify their decision that a nemesis from the past appears, which not only threatens their plans for the immediate future, but their very lives as well.

Thinking he would purchase some land and send for his son Josue and wife Molly and their son Juan to leave Spain and start a new life in Australia. When the Gonzaleys finally settled on the land they experienced nothing but hardship. Continuous drought and fierce confrontation from their neighbours the aboriginals and Police Troopers led by the ruthless Henry Blunder were only some of the setbacks they had to deal with.

Reading Abbey was built by King Henry I to be a great architectural statement and his own mausoleum, as well as a place of resort and a staging point for royal itineraries for progresses in the west and south-west of England. Fromthe start it was envisaged as a monastic site with a high degree of independence from the church hierarchy; it was granted enormous holdings of land and major religious relics to attract visitors and pilgrims, and no expense wasspared in providing a church comparable in size and splendour with anything else in England. However, in architectural terms, the abbey has, until recently, remained enigmatic, mainly because of the efficiency with which itwas destroyed at the Reformation. Only recently has it become possible to bring together the scattered evidence - antiquarian drawings and historic records along with a new survey of the standing remains - into a coherent picture.This richly illustrated volume provides the first full account of the abbey, from foundation to dissolution, and offers a new virtual reconstruction of the church and its cloister; it also shows how the abbey formed the backdropto many key historical events. Ron Baxter is the Research Director of the Corpus of Romanesque Sculpture in Britain and Ireland.

The Cloud! It sounds so fluffy and soft. Amorphous, remote, floating above the world. Run it in the Cloud, we cay. A modern metaphor, but once we had another name, a more descriptive name for using someone else's computer. We called it time-sharing. Today we mix the idea of using distant computers and the idea of communicating via a network and call the combination The Cloud, imagining we have invented something new. But it isn't so new after all. Beginning in the 1960s, a company created a successful business making remote computer services available inexpensively to anyone via a network built for that purpose. Companies offered online resources from banking to research, email to instant messaging, and the ability to run applications on powerful, remote computers and access them from anywhere. In doing so, they created the first cloud. They called it Tymnet, and the company was Tymshare. I worked for Tymnet for more that 12 years, from the beginning of 1980 until 1992. The people I worked with were some of the finest anywhere, and the memories of my years with Tymnet are among my fondest.
