Across central and eastern Europe after World War II, the newly established communist regimes promised a drastic social revolution that would transform the world at great pace and pave the way to a socialist future. Although many aspects of this utopian project are well known - such as fast-paced industrialisation, collectivisation and urbanisation - the regimes even sought to transform the ways in which their citizens interacted with each other and the world around them. Using a unique analytical model based on an amalgam of anthropology, sociology, history and extensive archival research, award-winning scholar Roman Krakovsky here considers the Czechoslovakian attempt to 'reinvent the world' - 'time' and 'space' included - in this all-encompassing way. Ranging from WWII to the fall of the Berlin Wall, his innovative analysis variously considers the impact of Stakhanovism, the impossible-to-achieve production targets intended to assert socialism's future potential; the attempt to replace Sunday's Christian attributes with socialist ones; and the profound changes brought about to the public and private spheres, including the culture of informing and the ways this was circumvented. Across a wide range of case studies Krakovsky demonstrates both the far-reaching extent of the communist vision and the inherent flaws and contradictions that gradually destabilised it. Beginning with his employment by a Hungarian family as piano tutor in 1879, Mahler's contacts with Hungary spanned a full quarter of a century. They included the most significant period of some three years when he directed the Royal Hungarian Opera, exercising artistic control over a major institution for the first time, and ended with his guiding from afar of an early and astonishing performance of the complete Third Symphony in Budapest in 1905. Published accounts (especially of his work between 1888 and 1891) are variously anecdotal, inaccurate or incomplete. This work, then, is the first comprehensive examination of Mahler's connections with Hungary, based on primary sources (many published in English here for the first time) and documented secondary evidence. While Chapter III, devoted to Mahler's three seasons as director, is the focus and bulk of the book, Chapters II and IV provide a socio-cultural setting for the period, essential to an understanding of his lot as opera director. The framing chapters concern Mahler's road to Budapest on the one hand, and his Hungarian contacts after 1891 on the other. With its rich offering of documents and many illustrations, this book presents a scholarly, yet highly readable and fascinating account of an important part of Mahler's life and career.

In light of the dramatic growth and rapid institutionalization of human-animal studies in recent years, it is somewhat surprising that only a small number of publications have proposed practical and theoretical approaches to teaching in this inter- and transdisciplinary field. Featuring eleven original pedagogical interventions from the social sciences and the humanities as well as an epilogue from ecofeminist critic Greta Gaard, the present volume addresses this gap and responds to the demand by both educators and students for pedagogies appropriate for dealing with environmental crises. The theoretical and practical contributions collected here describe new ways of teaching human-animal studies in different educational settings and institutional contexts, suggesting how learners – equipped with key concepts such as agency or relationality – can develop empathy and ethical regard for the more-than-human world and especially nonhuman animals. As the contributors to this volume show, these cognitive and affective goals can be achieved in many curricula in secondary and tertiary education. By providing learners with the tools to challenge human exceptionalism in its various guises and related patterns of domination and exploitation in and outside the classroom, these interventions also contribute to a much-needed transformation not only of today's educational systems but of society as a whole. This volume is an invitation to beginners and experienced instructors alike, an invitation to (re)consider how we teach human-animal studies and how we could and should prepare learners for an uncertain future in, ideally, a more egalitarian and just multispecies world. History aside, Roman Mac's story is also a moving human document. There is tragedy, heartbreak and heroic endurance here, both witnessed and lived. And Roman depicts it all in modest, straightforward style not only the great struggle that was going on around him, but also the struggle that was going on within himself. We see and feel the rustic joys and travails of village life, the destruction and loss that war, Nazism and Communism bring upon it, and we, too, struggle along the "winding path to freedom" with a young boy who manages to keep his faith, his humanity and not the least of accomplishments amidst so much suffering and sorrow his sense of humor through it all. Although I was already familiar with Ukrainian history and, as an aide to Presidents Nixon, Ford and Reagan, was 2 ROMAN D. MAC an eye witness to the last chapters of the Cold War, reading Roman Mac's story made me understand more fully what that colossal struggle was really like for the ordinary people who bore the brunt of it. His gift of making us see it all as he saw it then, through a young boy's eyes, brings alive both the brutality of battle and magic, solitary moments in the still forest with only woodland creatures as companions. We feel the pelting snow and piercing cold, we smell the smoke of the campfires, and we hear both the whiz of bullets and the deep, moving chords of the freedom fighters'songs, just as the young Roman Mac did more than half a century ago. Then, with the battle over, we follow a troubled but determined young man on the road to a new life in the west. We share the ups and downs of a new series of trials and tests from which he emerges once again with his humanity and his humor intact. By book's end, we feel as if we've walked beside him all the way, and we, too, experience his joy in achieving success, dignity and a happy family life in America. Thank you, Roman Mac, for sharing and showing us so much, and for doing it with such clarity, honesty and goodness of heart.
