How is it that we feel with fictional characters and so approve or disapprove of their actions? For many British Enlightenment thinkers writing at a time when sympathy was the pivot of ethics as well as poetics, this question was crucial. Asserting that the notion of the sympathetic imagination prominent in Romantic criticism and poetry originates in Moral Sentimentalism, this study traces the emergence of what became a key concept of intersubjectivity. It shows how, contrary to earlier traditions, Francis Hutcheson and his disciples successively established the imagination rather than reason as the pivotal faculty through which sympathy is rendered morally effective. Writing at the interface of ethics and poetics, Adam Smith, Lord Kames and others explored the sympathetic imagination as a means of both explaining emotional reader response and discovering moral distinctions. As a result, the sentimental novel became the sight of ethical controversy. Arguing against the dominant view of research which claims that the novel of sensibility is mostly uncritically sentimental, the book demonstrates that it is precisely in this genre that the sympathetic imagination is sceptically assessed in terms of its literary and moral potential.

In the past few decades, biodegradable polymers have reached significant importance in fields of biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. They have become preferred candidates for the manufacture of therapeutic forms, for instance, orthopaedics devices, temporary bone screws and spins, three-dimensional scaffolds for tissue engineering or drug delivery systems for sustained and targeted release. Each of these applications requires material with specific physical, biological, and chemical properties, as well as specific degradation profile. These polymers (natural or synthetic) undergo hydrolytic or enzymatic degradation, which both have some advantages and disadvantages. In Communists and Their Victims, Roman David identifies and examines four classes of justice measures—retributive, reparatory, revelatory, and reconciliatory—to discover which, if any, rectified the legacy of human rights abuses committed during the communist era in the Czech Republic. Conducting interviews, focus groups, and nationwide surveys between 1999 and 2015, David looks at the impact of financial compensation and truth-sharing on victims' healing and examines the role of retribution in the behavior and attitudes of communists and their families. Emphasizing the narratives of former political prisoners, secret collaborators, and former Communist Party members, David tests the potential of justice measures to contribute to a shared sense of justice and their ability to overcome the class structure and ideological divides of a formerly communist regime. Complementing his original research with analysis of legal judgments, governmental reports, and historical records, David finds that some justice measures were effective in overcoming material and ideological divides while others obstructed victims' healing and inhibited the transformation of communists. Identifying "justice without reconciliation" as the primary factor hampering the process of overcoming the past in the Czech Republic, Communists and Their Victims promotes a transformative theory of justice that demonstrates that justice measures, in order to be successful, require a degree of reconciliation.

Document from the year 2018 in the subject Pharmacology, grade: 1, , course: Pharmaceutical Technology, language: English, abstract: The aim of this book is to provide a brief but comprehensive overview on the issue of drug bioavailability improvement by preparation of a perspective dosage form – liquisolid systems. The introduction chapter about drug solubility and bioavailability is followed by a description of the general methods which could be used to improve drug bioavailability using approaches of chemistry, physical modification, and primarily pharmaceutical technology. Benefits and practical use of each method are documented by examples. The main part of the book is aimed at characterization and description of liquisolid systems (LSS) – perspective dosage form for bioavailability improvement. Elementary principles of LSS formulation are described in detail, e.g. how to perform a preformulation study; how to choose the correct type and amount of excipients; how to evaluate the dosage forms, etc. All the above mentioned principles are documented with practical examples. The book could be used as a textbook for students of natural, medical and pharmaceutical sciences as well as by researchers in this field or industrial area. Contemporary pharmacotherapy is characterized by the increasing amount of active substances that are only poorly soluble in water. This may lead to the limitation of their systemic absorption on oral administration which is closely related to the bioavailability. This category is estimated to include more than forty percent of active substances that are in general use. So far, this poor aqueous solubility has been improved by physical or chemical modification of the active substance. In general, such changes are very expensive and troublesome, often leading to problems in stability, marketing authorization process, or administration comfort of the particular drug. This is one of the reasons why modern pharmaceutical technology has focused on those dosage forms that can increase the bioavailability of some active substances while maintaining suitable stability and administration comfort. Several processes that improve solubility, respectively bioavailability have been described and published. These include micronization, nanocrystals, and formulation of solid dispersions. Only recently, a novel trend has appeared – to take advantage of good solubility of active substances in chosen solvents, that is, to use the active substances in a liquid phase.

Historic Myanmar elections in November 2015 paved the way for an NLD government led by Aung San Suu Kyi to take office in March 2016, and saw the country deepen its graduated transition away from authoritarian rule. Nevertheless, military forces that for decades dominated national politics remain privileged in a constitutional framework designed to deliver 'discipline-flourishing democracy'. In August 2017, the military intensified its campaign of ethnic cleansing of Myanmar's Rohingya Muslim minority, and more than 750,000 refugees fled to neighbouring Bangladesh. One critical question that now confronts the fifty million people of this Southeast Asian nation is whether their push for greater democracy is strong enough to prevail over the resistance of a powerful military machine and swelling undercurrents of intolerance. What are the prospects for liberal democracy in Myanmar? This book addresses this question by examining historical conditions, constitutionalism, popular support for democracy, major political actors, group relations and tolerance, and transitional justice. To probe the meaning and purchase of key concepts it presents a rich array of evidence, including eighty-eight in-depth interviews and three waves of surveys and survey experiments conducted by the authors between 2014 and 2018, all of which are triangulated with constitutional and legal texts and reports issued locally and globally. The analysis culminates in the concept of limited liberalism, which reflects an at times puzzling blend of liberal and illiberal attitudes. The book concludes that a weakening of liberal commitments among politicians and citizens alike, allied with spreading limited liberal attitudes, casts doubt on the prospects for liberal democracy in Myanmar.
