This book states that the political systems of China, Vietnam, Cuba and other socialist countries are showing distinct maturity and ability to deal effectively with challenges – the most recent being the COVID-19 pandemic. In order to understand how they have developed their structures, it is time to return to the roots of the Marxist tradition and re-examine the question of socialist governance. It was Friedrich Engels (and less so Marx) who laid out some of the theoretical foundations for socialist governance. On the basis of extensive research in 1870s and 1880s, Engels developed his analysis of the nature of hitherto existing states as a ‘separated public power’; the role of the dictatorship of the proletariat and its exercise of power; the actual meaning of the ‘withering away of the state’, which would be one of the very last outcomes of socialist construction; and the nature of socialist governance itself. On this matter, he proposed a de-politicised public power that would stand in the midst of society and focus on managing the processes of production for the sake of the true interests of society.

Bainton believes that the Christian community started out pacifistic, then developed the just war doctrine, and finally adopted holy war ideals. He traces this trajectory from the Early Church up through the wars and conflicts of the 20th century. This book examines the new economic governance (NEG) regime that the EU adopted after 2008. Its novel research design captures the supranational formulation of NEG prescriptions and their uneven deployment across countries (Germany, Italy, Ireland, Romania), policy areas (employment relations, public services), and sectors (transport, water, healthcare). In the natural sciences today, research and teaching are often carried out on the assumption of evolution. The evolution theory is at present one of the main basic concepts of the scientific community. However, there are at least 75 scientific arguments that invalidate the evolution theory. 95 Theses Against Evolution makes it clear that alternative concepts are necessary, such as ID (intelligent design). This book shows that ID is much more credible than evolution. Though unresolved questions of detail are included, the model of the theory of evolution, primeval soup, and the Big Bang, is not called into question as a basic principle. This paradigm contains fundamental, non-provable extrapolations into the distant past as well as philosophical assumptions that are elevated to scientific dogmas. The assumption of evolution is so deeply rooted in science that only a massive change in thinking can lead to freer handling of questions of origin and development. The 95 Theses described here are intended to contribute to this discussion. Today’s situation is similar to that in the 16th century, when Dr. Martin Luther with his 95 Theses, invited debate on church practices of the time. Hopefully, this publication will have a similar effect.

This thesis is concerned with the numerical solution of boundary value problems (BVPs) governed by nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs). To iteratively solve such BVPs, it is of primal importance to develop efficient schemes that guarantee convergence of the numerically approximated PDE solutions towards the exact solution. The new adaptive wavelet theory guarantees convergence of adaptive schemes with fixed approximation rates. Furthermore, optimal, i.e., linear, complexity estimates of such adaptive solution methods have been established. These achievements are possible since wavelets allow for a completely new perspective to attack BVPs: namely, to represent PDEs in their original infinite dimensional realm. Wavelets in this context represent function bases with special analytical properties, e.g., the wavelets considered herein are piecewise polynomials, have compact support and norm equivalences between certain function spaces and the $ell_2$ sequence spaces of expansion coefficients exist. This theoretical framework is implemented in the course of this thesis in a truly dimensionally unrestricted adaptive wavelet program code, which allows one to harness the proven theoretical results for the first time when numerically solving the above mentioned BVPs. Numerical studies of 2D and 3D PDEs and BVPs demonstrate the feasibility and performance of the developed schemes. The BVPs are solved using an adaptive Uzawa algorithm, which requires repeated solution of nonlinear PDE sub-problems. This thesis presents for the first time a numerically competitive implementation of a new theoretical paradigm to solve nonlinear elliptic PDEs in arbitrary space dimensions with a complete convergence and complexity theory.
