American readers will rarely see these two thrillers from the 30s by Britain's Roland Daniel. THE SIGNAL (1933) begins with a rich man receiving in the mail five beans (!) just before he's dispatched with a pistol by an unknown hand. Sounds like something Harry Stephen Keeler might have opined. And Fu Manchu has nothing on the inscrutable and titular Wu Fang, whose sordid machinations threaten a young American woman, her Secret Service beau, his cockney sidekick and Superintendent Bill Saville of the Yard. The wily celestial, introduced in 1934, has picked up some new tortures by 1937, and can't wait to try them on the whole crowd.
William Ewart Gladstone (1809-98) was the outstanding statesman of the Victorian age. He was an MP for over sixty years, a long serving and exceptional Chancellor of the Exchequer and four times Prime Minister. As the leader of the Liberal party over three decades, he personified the values and policies of later Victorian Liberalism. Gladstone, however, was always more than just a politician. He was also a considerable scholar, a dedicated Churchman and had a range of interests and connections that made him, in many respects, the quintessential Victorian. Yet important aspects of Gladstone's life have received relatively little recent attention from historians. This study reappraises Gladstone by focusing on five themes: his reputation; his representation in visual and material culture; his personal life; his role as an official; and the ethical and political basis of his international policies. This collection of original, often multidisciplinary studies, provides new perspectives on Gladstone's public and private life. As such, it illustrates the many-sided nature of his career and the complexities of his personality.
Kingston playwright R.C. Sherriff came to fame with his First World War drama Journeys End, which was based on his own experiences as a young officer on the Western Front. Its success made him a household name and opened the door to a highly lucrative career as a novelist, playwright and screenwriter in Hollywood and in Britain. Many of his movies The Invisible Man, Goodbye Mr Chips, The Four Feathers Odd Man Out, Quartet, and, of course, The Dam Busters are still well known, but the man behind them much less so. This book rediscovers Sherriff using his own words his letters, diaries, published and unpublished manuscripts to shed light on a man who ironically gained his greatest success from the trench warfare he found so difficult to bear.

London Poor, is a novel about love in a time of poverty and inspiration. The protagonist an Igbo born in Merseyside and brought up in Belfast by professional parents who seeks a career as a young man in London, but falls into despair and becomes an artist fighting demons and dreams alike. He meets Sibby a Jamaican English woman younger than he with the merest blush of almond skin. She is a curator at the Courtauld where he falls in love. The two of them through ordinary days explore their sexuality, inhibitions, and prejudices, and aspire to joy, pure joy. as the novel unfolds through the arts and work, and home and street life, London becomes a place where a man might save his soul and a woman be taken to paradise. There is nothing artificial about this novel, it is a work of fiction, but realistic in nature. Strengths: Vivid description, juxtapositions - “I was burning with lust and fear, as a mentally insane, unemployed upper middle class” (9) - “My heart felt so big, it filled the whole room, I thought I was in love; with this Nwoke or a moment!” (27). - “The charcoal snapped several times and the portrait looked like a jigsaw of, eyes, nose, mouth, cheeks, chin and forehead, and lips” (34-35).

Rising from a humble background in rural southern Ireland, John Tyndall became one of the foremost physicists, communicators of science, and polemicists in mid-Victorian Britain. In science, he is known for his important work in meteorology, climate science, magnetism, acoustics, and bacteriology. His discoveries include the physical basis of the warming of the Earth's atmosphere (the basis of the greenhouse effect), and establishing why the sky is blue. But he was also a leading communicator of science, drawing great crowds to his lectures at the Royal Institution, while also playing an active role in the Royal Society. Tyndall moved in the highest social and intellectual circles. A friend of Tennyson and Carlyle, as well as Michael Faraday and Thomas Huxley, Tyndall was one of the most visible advocates of a scientific world view as tensions grew between developing scientific knowledge and theology. He was an active and often controversial commentator, through letters, essays, speeches, and debates, on the scientific, political, and social issues of the day, with strongly stated views on Ireland, religion, race, and the role of women. Widely read in America, his lecture tour there in 1872-73 was a great success. Roland Jackson paints a picture of an individual at the heart of Victorian science and society. He also describes Tyndall's importance as a pioneering mountaineer in what has become known as the Golden Age of Alpinism. Among other feats, Tyndall was the first to traverse the Matterhorn.
