Barthes's lectures move from the desire to write to the actual decision making, planning, and material act of producing a novel. He meets the difficulty of transitioning from short, concise notations (exemplified by his favorite literary form, haiku) to longer, uninterrupted flows of narrative, and he encounters a number of setbacks. Barthes takes solace in a diverse group of writers, including Dante, whose La Vita Nuova was similarly inspired by the death of a loved one, and he turns to classical philosophy, Taoism, and the works of François-René Chateaubriand, Gustave Flaubert, Franz Kafka, and Marcel Proust. Ich glaube, das Völkchen wittert eine neue Hinrichtung. Wissen sie am Ende, daß wir schon seit Wochen keine Gage mehr gerochen haben, daß der Fundus gepfändet ist und die Vollstreckungszündschnüre überall glimmen? "Es gibt Wunder," meint treuherzig unsere Naive und heult in die frische Schminke hinein, "glaubt mir, es gibt Wunder. Denkt an die Auferweckung des Lazarus. Und Jesus hat aus Wasser Wein gemacht, und mit einem Brot viele Tausende gespeist. Es gibt Wunder." Man sieht, unsere Naive ist bibelfest. In the late fifteenth century, the production of print editions of Claudius Ptolemy’s second-century Geography sparked one of the most significant intellectual developments of the era—the production of mathematically-based, north-oriented maps. The production of world maps in England, however, was notably absent during this "Ptolemaic revival." As a result, the impact of Ptolemy’s text on English geographical thought has been obscured and minimalized, with scholars speculating a possible English indifference to or isolation from European geographic developments. Tracing English geographical thought through the material culture of literary and popular texts, this study provides evidence for the reception and transmission of Ptolemaic-based geography in England during a critical period of geographic innovation and synthesis, one that laid the foundation for modern geographical representation. With evidence from prose romance, book illustration, theatrical performance, cosmological ceilings, and almanacs, Mirror of the World proposes a new, interdisciplinary literary and cartographic history of the influence of Ptolemaic geography in England, one that reveals the lively integration of geographic concepts through narrative and non-cartographic visual forms.

Post-Petrarchism offers a theoretical study of lyric poetry through one of its most long-lived and widely practiced models: the lyric sequence, originated by Francis Petrarch in his Canzoniere of the late fourteenth century. A framework in which poems are suspended according to some organizing or unifying principle, the lyric sequence emerges from European humanist culture as a poetic discourse that represents personal experience and operates as a kind of fiction. Here Roland Greene proposes that since Petrarch the lyric sequence has survived in European and American literatures--from Shakespeare's Sonnets to The Waste Land to Trilce--as a complex in which formal, generic, and cultural designs intersect, and as an embodiment of lyric discourse at its most extensive, inclusive, and ambitious. Enabled by a theoretical introduction to the genre at large, the book treats the founding and elaboration of the vernacular sequence in six major texts by Petrarch, Philip Sidney, Edward Taylor, Walt Whitman, W. B. Yeats, Pablo Neruda, and Martin Adan. Throughout Greene shows how Petrarchism has evolved as lyric discourse through its exposure to such events as the Reformation and Puritanism, the settlement of the New World, and the various modernisms of Europe and the Americas. Originally published in 1991. Der Deutsche bei seiner Gründlichkeit und fachwissenschaftlichen Präzision bedurfte einer längeren Zeit der einzelnen Fortentwickelungen, und dazu traten die ungeheuren Schwierigkeiten der Materialbeschaffung, 13 die namentlich für die Motorenlieferung sehr oft unangenehme Ueberraschungen brachten. Nur die erstaunliche Organisation der deutschen Fliegerwaffe, die Tüchtigkeit der Flugzeugbesatzungen und die unglaublichsten Anstrengungen der Industrie vermochten es, im Wettbewerb kraftvoll hervorzutreten.
