An automated selection of simulation algorithms supports users in setting up simulation experiments without demanding expert knowledge on simulation. Roland Ewald analyzes and discusses existing approaches to solve the algorithm selection problem in the context of simulation. He introduces a framework for automatic simulation algorithm selection and describes its integration into the open-source modelling and simulation framework James II. Its selection mechanisms are able to cope with three situations: no prior knowledge is available, the impact of problem features on simulator performance is unknown, and a relationship between problem features and algorithm performance can be established empirically. The author concludes with an experimental evaluation of the developed methods.

The history of the peace movement in the United States was one of dramatic change: in the mid-IKWs it consisted of a few provincial societies; by 1912 it had become eminently respectable and listed among its members an impressive number of the nation's leaders; by 1918 it was once again weak and remote from those who formulated national policy. Along with these fluctuations went equally substantial changes of leadership and purpose that, as C. Roland Marchand emphasizes, reflected the motives of the various reform groups that successively joined and dominated the movement. Most of those who joined were not devoted solely to the cause of world peace, but saw in the programs of the movement a chance for the fulfillment of their own mare immediately relevant goals. Consequently the story of the peace movement reflects the concerns of such groups as the international lawyers who wanted a world court of arbitration as an alternative to war, the business leaders who believed that international economic stability would be endangered by war, and the labor unions who felt that the working class suffered most in war. Dr.techn. Franz Wojda and Ass.Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Dr.techn. Walter Hackl-Gruber by Roland Schuster. It is in accordance to a specialization in leadership and organization. The diploma thesis has its roots in the general system theory and emphasizes on a holistic view on the situation of unemployment in the United States. The chosen approach is a combination of state of the art scientific knowledge from the fields of sociology, psychology and economy. In the previous work performed for the thesis it was detected that the diversity of the basic approach is necessary in meeting the complexity of the issue. The many different factors influencing the chosen topic of unemployment are widespread. Contributing to the theory of systems thinking the goal of the thesis was to find and describe an existing pattern that makes it possible to see the dynamic of the system. The systemic view takes in account that everything is interconnected and hence interacting. Systems thinking states that there are effects and influences on- and by unemployment that are only visible in applying a holistic view. The reason why the present paper is groundbreaking is not so much because of the used scientific knowledge, which is state of the art, but because of the combination of this knowledge. This combination is meant to regard to one of the tasks given by cybernetics in increasing differentiation instead of increasing growth. The basic standpoint is that the quantity of existing knowledge is already enough to create possible approaches for ways to optimize the current situation. Only lacking is the understanding of how all the fragments are connected. Systems thinking, an application of system theory, in this context, is seen as a tool that makes it possible to develop a model to generate this understanding. The thesis provides a brief overview of the United States Unemployment Insurance System and a systems thinking approach used for an interpretation of the current situation in the United States. The dramatic events of the Pearl Harbor attack have been covered in detail from a wide variety of approaches. What came next--the American declaration of war, the intervention of Germany and Italy and the U.S. proclaiming war against them as well--has been given considerably less attention. This detailed volume fills that gap with careful analysis of how the public and Congress reacted to the attack and how it began to modify their past attitudes toward foreign war. Excerpts from the Congressional Record of 1941 support the author's discussion of the debates leading to the decision to declare war. The book explores the rationales defending past conduct by those who had been of both interventionist and anti-interventionist sentiments, as well as their collective effort to forge a national consensus that would support a multi-year international conflict. Emphasis is also placed on the reasoning behind war not being immediately declared on Germany as well as Japan and the motivations behind Germany's decision to enter the conflict on it's own initiative. Lengthy attention is given to Jeanette Rankin, the only House member to vote against the war.

The Naked Communist argues that the political ideologies of modernity were fundamentally determined by four basic figures: the world, the enemy, the secret, and the catastrophe. While the "world" names the totality that functioned as the ultimate horizon of modern political imagination, the three other figures define the necessary limits of this totality by reflecting on the limits of representation. The book highlights the enduring presence of these figures in the modern imagination through detailed analysis of a concrete historical example: American anti-Communist politics of the 1950s. Its primary objective is to describe the internal mechanisms of what we could call an anti-Communist "aesthetic ideology." The book thus traces the way anti-Communist popular culture emerged in the discourse of Cold War liberalism as a political symptom of modernism. Based on a discursive analysis of American anti-Communist politics, the book presents parallel readings of modernism and popular fiction from the 1950s (nuclear holocaust novels, spy novels, and popular political novels) in order to show that, despite the radical separation of the two cultural fields, they both participated in a common ideological program.
