Document from the year 2018 in the subject Health - Public Health, University of the Witwatersrand, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this paper is to investigate how operations strategy and lean concepts can be applied within the south Africa’s healthcare organisations and the degree to which both Lean and operations strategy are understood by senior-level National Health Service (NHS) personnel, based on the process of ongoing longitudinal cases studies. Further interviews and data analysis will examine actual performance of Lean capabilities within the NHS.
Project Report from the year 2017 in the subject Computer Science - Programming, , language: English, abstract: This report covers the work that was carried out by a group of researchers on CNC (Computer Numerical Control) programming and machining. The task was to choose and design a creative item to be machined using CNC machining, which then required to write a code using CNC language. Prior to the machining process, we did a Computer Aided Design (CAD) drawing of the Mercedes Benz logo. The logo was further modified with the final model drawn using Auto Desk Inventor. We used foam for our model and a 10 diameter end mill tool. The main problem that was experienced was the cutting time; the model took longer to be complete. The cutting time was affected by the complexity of the design, chosen tool size and the cutting technique. We learnt from the demonstration that the shorter the constructed code the more robust it is, using a bigger tool is more efficient in terms of saving energy and time, and that if the code is correct the CNC machine model becomes identical to that of the product Design.
This book begins by looking at the peoples of Africa at the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and goes on to study the commercial and ideological penetration of Africa by the outside world. The partition and colonisation of Africa by the European powers are discussed, and there is comprehensive discussion of the colonial rule between 1885 and 1960. The last third of the book is concerned with the history of independent Africa during the last years of the twentieth century. The new edition covers events up to the middle of 2003, and takes account of the fresh perspectives brought about by the end of the Cold War and the new global situation following the events of September 11, 2001. It is also concerned with the demographic trends, with the ravages of diseases such as AIDS and malaria, and with the conflicts waged by warlords.
Project Report from the year 2017 in the subject Engineering - General, , language: English, abstract: There exist some fields in which the learning curves can be applied; they have a much wider applications including manufacturing and marketing strategy. However, they underlay the concept of continuous improvement, pricing decisions, work scheduling, standard setting, direct labour budget etc. Learning curve states that decreasing man hours are required to accomplish any repetitive task as the operation is continued; then knowledge of learning curve can be useful both in planning and control. Estimates of learning curves are used in many applications in organizations and they can be effective with the job which is repetitive in nature particulars with same machinery and tools; thus this study aims at improving the application of the learning curve which describes how knowledge is acquired and retained when people repeat a process. The overall purpose of this report is to determine whether or not the learning curve theory can be replicated. Data will be gathered based on the England flyer folding instructions; thereafter we will be plotting the learning curve by calculating the cumulative average, estimating the table of unit improvement curves and determining the learning rate. When a new product or process is started, performance of worker is not at its best and learning phenomenon takes place. As the experience is gained, the performance of worker improves, time taken per unit reduces; and then his productivity goes up. Thus, people who learn always increase their experience, they gain skill and ability from their own experience and the results throughout processes are improved. The usual use of learning curves is to estimate the labor hours and thereby much of the cost, of a manufactured good that is built in significant quantities.
Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2017 in the subject Engineering - Mechanical Engineering, University of the Witwatersrand, language: English, abstract: A combined 3D linear and circular interpolation principle is developed on the basis of the 3D linear and circular interpolation principles. The task was to choose and design a creative item to be machined using CNC machining, which then required to write a code using CNC language. Prior to the machining process, we did a Computer Aided Design (CAD) drawing of the workpiece. The drawing was further modified with the final model drawn using Auto Desk Inventor. We used foam for our model and a 31 diameter end mill tool. The main problem that was experienced was the cutting time; the model took longer to be complete. The cutting time was affected by the complexity of the design, chosen tool size and the cutting technique. Besides, we learnt from the demonstration that the shorter the constructed code the more robust it is, using a bigger tool is more efficient in terms of saving energy and time, and that if the code is correct the CNC machine model becomes identical to that of the product Design.
Project Report from the year 2017 in the subject Engineering - Industrial Engineering and Management, , language: English, abstract: The conventional approach of biodiesel production is transesterification, using oil and alcohol in the presence of a catalyst with glycerol as a by-product of the reaction. Product quality is dependent on the type and amount of catalyst, type of oil feedstock, alcohol-to-oil ratio, etc. In terms of the best process, currently the alkali catalyzed process is the most profitable while the enzymatic based one is even more promising due to the lower consumption of energy and water; however it requires that the enzyme cost is reduced. The reason that biodiesel is not utilized widely around the world is due to the high cost of raw materials. To overcome this, one can use lower quality oils, such as Waste Cooking Oil (WCO). A lot of research has been carried out on the production of biodiesel from fresh vegetable and animal oil sources but the use of Waste Cooking Oil, such as palm oil, etc. has not been well documented. Then the aim of this current project is to analyze and optimize the conditions for biodiesel production from Waste Cooking Oil, by investigating interaction effects among process variables (temperature, oil-to-methanol molar ratio and catalyst loading) using SPC and other tools. Thus this project focuses on making biodiesel processes better and more efficient.
