Love poetry dominated European literature during the Renaissance. Its attitudes, conventions, and values appeared not only in courtly settings but also in the transatlantic world, where cultures were being built, power exercised, and policies made. In this major contribution to our understanding of both the Age of Exploration and early modern lyric, Roland Greene argues that love poetry was not simply a reflection of the times but a means of cultural transformation. European encounters with the Americas awakened many forms of desire, which pervaded the writings of explorers like Columbus and his contemporaries. These experiences in turn shaped colonial society in Brazil, Peru, and elsewhere. The New World, while it could be explored, conquered, and exploited, could never really be "known"—leaving Europe's desire continually unrequited and the project of empire unfulfilled. Using numerous poetic examples and extensive historical documentation, Unrequited Conquests rewrites the relations between the Renaissance and colonial Latin America and between poetry and history.

In this original experiment in critical semantics, Roland Greene considers how these five words changed over the course of the sixteenth century and what their changes indicate about broader forces in science, politics, and other disciplines. Greene discusses a broad swath of Renaissance and transatlantic literature - including Shakespeare, Cervantes, Camoes, and Milton - in terms of the development of these words rather than works, careers, or histories. He creates a method for describing and understanding the semantic changes that occur, extending his argument to other words that operate in the same manner. Aiming to shift the conversation around Renaissance literature from current approaches to riskier enterprises, Greene also challenges semantic-historicist scholars, proposing a method that takes advantage of digital resources like full-text databases but still depends on the interpreter to fashion ideas out of ordinary language. In Greene's writings we notice a genuine concern with social and political conflicts at different places in the world. But at the same time they bear witness to a distinct involvement in problems of human nature and behaviour. In this respect we can formulate some dominating preoccupations, such as the stressing of antitheses and antagonisms, which he calls himself 'cleavage'; the questioning of loyalty and the claiming of the right to disloyalty; the repercussion of childhood experiences, in particular the father-son relationship, on adult life; and the transcendental dimension in human experience. From a psychoanalytic viewpoint we analyse the various elaborations of these general themes in the work of Greene as symbolizations of specific unconscious phantasies, defined in the writings of Freud, Klein, Fairbairn, Kernberg, Kohut and Winnicott. This analysis of the imaginary world of an author is conceived as analogous to a clinical psychoanalysis. It is a hermeneutical activity based on the countertransference experience, evoked by the reading of the text, while taking into account the manifold strategies of symbolizing in a literary work, the choice of the genre, themes, text-construction, tropes, word-plays, figurative language, repetition, discontinuity, parallelism, plot and characters.
Post-Petrarchism offers a theoretical study of lyric poetry through one of its most long-lived and widely practiced models: the lyric sequence, originated by Francis Petrarch in his Canzoniere of the late fourteenth century. A framework in which poems are suspended according to some organizing or unifying principle, the lyric sequence emerges from European humanist culture as a poetic discourse that represents personal experience and operates as a kind of fiction. Here Roland Greene proposes that since Petrarch the lyric sequence has survived in European and American literatures--from Shakespeare's Sonnets to The Waste Land to Trilce--as a complex in which formal, generic, and cultural designs intersect, and as an embodiment of lyric discourse at its most extensive, inclusive, and ambitious. Enabled by a theoretical introduction to the genre at large, the book treats the founding and elaboration of the vernacular sequence in six major texts by Petrarch, Philip Sidney, Edward Taylor, Walt Whitman, W. B. Yeats, Pablo Neruda, and Martin Adan. Throughout Greene shows how Petrarchism has evolved as lyric discourse through its exposure to such events as the Reformation and Puritanism, the settlement of the New World, and the various modernisms of Europe and the Americas. I chose The Last Eve as the title of this book because early in the Bible study, we learn that sin first came into a perfect world by the first Eve. She was created to be a helper for the first man Adam, who was first created, put in a perfect garden, and given instructions to dress and keep it. Also, he was given for food all that grew in the garden except the fruit of one tree, the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Eve, who was created after Adam and from a part of Adam, was told by Adam of the instructions given to him by the Creator; otherwise, she could not have known that fruit from that tree was forbidden. Her desire to elevate herself above that which the Creator had given her is precisely the desire of women today and the reason a once great country, the United States of America along with the rest of the world, has now become so divided. As the apostle said, we can be nothing and have nothing except it be given to use by the One who created us. Passage of the Nineteenth Amendment to the US Constitution giving women the right to vote gave her the opportunity she desired to again take that which is forbidden to her, to have authority over men (1 Timothy 2:12). The Congress of the United States is now nearly half women, who can be accurately described as the last Eve because like the first Eve, they have taken which is forbidden to them. They take part in making laws which have authority over men as well as women. At the judgment, those men who allow it will hear as the first Adam did because you have hearkened to the voice of your wife!
