In Greene's writings we notice a genuine concern with social and political conflicts at different places in the world. But at the same time they bear witness to a distinct involvement in problems of human nature and behaviour. In this respect we can formulate some dominating preoccupations, such as the stressing of antitheses and antagonisms, which he calls himself 'cleavage'; the questioning of loyalty and the claiming of the right to disloyalty; the repercussion of childhood experiences, in particular the father-son relationship, on adult life; and the transcendental dimension in human experience. From a psychoanalytic viewpoint we analyse the various elaborations of these general themes in the work of Greene as symbolizations of specific unconscious phantasies, defined in the writings of Freud, Klein, Fairbairn, Kernberg, Kohut and Winnicott. This analysis of the imaginary world of an author is conceived as analogous to a clinical psychoanalysis. It is a hermeneutical activity based on the countertransference experience, evoked by the reading of the text, while taking into account the manifold strategies of symbolizing in a literary work, the choice of the genre, themes, text-construction, tropes, word-plays, figurative language, repetition, discontinuity, parallelism, plot and characters.

In this richly evocative novel--the moving story of one boy's coming of age--acclaimed author Roland Merullo will make you nostalgic for a small Massachusetts city called Revere even if you've never been there. Providing a window into an unspoiled America of forty years ago, In Revere welcomes you to the fiercely loyal and devoted Italian-American family of the Benedettos. Although he was orphaned as a child, young Anthony Benedetto was always surrounded by family, and the vibrant warmth of the Revere community. His Uncle Peter, a former Golden Gloves boxer whose days of glory were behind him, believed Tonio was bound for great things. So did his daughter Rosie, Tonio's favorite cousin, who would take many wrong turns--away from Tonio--through adolescence. His gentle grandparents, who took him in, encouraged him to claim a future outside of Revere, but the warm, unconditional love of his family, and the smells and sounds of Revere stay with him forever.
Nine-year-old "e;Skid"e; Beaumont's family is stuck in the mud. Following his father's decision to relocate and build a new home, based on a drunken vision that New Orleans would rapidly expand eastwards into the wetlands as a result of the Seventies oil boom, Skid and his brothers grow up in a swampy area of Louisiana. But the constructions stop short, the dream fizzles out, and the Beaumonts find themselves sinking in a soggy corner of 1980s Cold War America. As things on the home front get more complicated, Skid learns of his mother's alleged magic powers and vaguely remembers some eerie stories surrounding his elder brother Frico. These, as well as early events that Skid saw with his own eyes, convince him that Frico has a gift to fix things by simply sketching them. For the next few years, Skid's self-appointed mission to convince his brother to join him in his lofty plan to change their family's luck and the world they live in will lead to even more mystery and high drama in the swamp. Atmospheric, uplifting and deeply moving, Sketcher - Roland Watson-Grant's stunning debut - is a novel about the beauty of life no matter how broken it is.
This book displays my severe confusion on my own sexual orientation starting at the young age of twelve years old not totally understanding myself or my place in life until the age of fifty years old. I also write about my personal struggles with homophobia from others, verbal abuse (both mentally and physically), society labeling, and raising my two loving daughters through some very turbulent, trying years. In addition, I tackle my suicidal thoughts, the death of both my parents, and the family values learned. I also explain what it is like living with AIDS daily, dealing with the stigma from AIDS, my strength, my sheer determination of never giving up and taking full responsibility for my own life without blaming anyone.

In the middle of the night a taxi driver noticed a rumbling noise under his car during an empty ride. Whilst traveling down Fördestrasse, the taxi had caught a body on the road and dragged it along for almost twenty metres. The man on the street was already dead by that time. It was likely that another vehicle had run him over at the place where hitchhikers used to stand. For years, undesirable hitchhikers had been intimidated here with gestures and steering manoevers. Was it the brainless fascist skinheads again, who already before went on a manhunt in their car on the bicycle path towards the Olympic Centre? A 15-year-old pseudo-punk joins the Kiel punk scene and experiences a blatant and wired time, which culminated in the Hanover Chaos Days 1983. It is puzzling why he suddenly joined the new skinhead scene around the wicked ex-punks Gonnrad and the Konz brothers. What got him into it? When the teenager later realises that the first skins are taking on right-wing radical tendencies, he tries to break away from the scene, but that doesn't turn out to be that easy. Finally he pulls the ripcord after another incident, even if he would have liked to remain a skinhead – England-style and working-class just like in the beginning. He manages to get out after a brutal fight with Stidi, one of the chief skins. The price is high. His face is smashed and his reputation ruined. Many punks are resentful and can't forgive him for the excursion into the strange world of skinheads. Even for the skins it is not over and done with yet. There is massive trouble on both sides. It was the madness of the 80s, a time full of self-destructive punks, scolding old Nazis, marauding skinheads and streetclubs, aspiring young Nazis and overtaxed policemen at the Chaos Days. After a crime against a rocker, a disoriented skinhead ended up at a New Year's Eve party of ordinary people: I remember there was a lot of light in the flat. The bright light and the white wallpaper hurt in my eyes. In my booze state I scribbled something on the white wallpaper in the hallway: Oi! Oi! Oi!, the battle cry of the skinheads. But I was afraid that this could be brought back to us, and I painted a T before: Toi! Toi! Toi!

Any scholarship that addresses the evolution of Christian perspectives on warfare generally references this book. first published in 1960. Although the scholarship of this work is now outdated and critiqued, Bainton's work is foundational in the area. Bainton believes that the Christian community started out pacifistic, then developed the just war doctrine, and finally adopted holy war ideals. He traces this trajectory from the Early Church up through the wars and conflicts of the 20th century. Finally, Bainton adds his critique of current militaristic ideas, especially in regards to atomic warfare. (from a review by Andrew Lumpkin)
