The transformation of acoustics into electro-acoustics, a field at the intersection of science and technology, guided by electrical engineering, industry, and the military. At the end of the nineteenth century, acoustics was a science of musical sounds; the musically trained ear was the ultimate reference. Just a few decades into the twentieth century, acoustics had undergone a transformation from a scientific field based on the understanding of classical music to one guided by electrical engineering, with industrial and military applications. In this book, Roland Wittje traces this transition, from the late nineteenth-century work of Hermann Helmholtz to the militarized research of World War I and media technology in the 1930s. Wittje shows that physics in the early twentieth century was not only about relativity and atomic structure but encompassed a range of experimental, applied, and industrial research fields. The emergence of technical acoustics and electroacoustics illustrates a scientific field at the intersection of science and technology. Wittje starts with Helmholtz's and Rayleigh's work and its intersection with telegraphy and early wireless, and continues with the industrialization of acoustics during World War I, when sound measurement was automated and electrical engineering and radio took over the concept of noise. Researchers no longer appealed to the musically trained ear to understand sound but to the thinking and practices of electrical engineering. Finally, Wittje covers the demilitarization of acoustics during the Weimar Republic and its remilitarization at the beginning of the Third Reich. He shows how technical acoustics fit well with the Nazi dismissal of pure science, representing everything that “German Physics” under National Socialism should be: experimental, applied, and relevant to the military.

Life on earth arose through the creative interplay of prebiotic conditions on earth and the everlasting reliable macrocosmic changes of light and darkness. The first life molecules were confronted with the Earth's two-faced environment manifesting itself as a rhythm of a damaging light phase (day) and a harmless low light dark phase (night) produced by the apparent celestial movements within the earth-moon-sun system. It required two mutually complementing molecule types: ribonucleic acids and peptides, which had to adapt jointly to that fundamental duality in order to achieve a 'duration across change'. Both combined into a helically intertwined ribonucleopeptide filament as the initial molecular structure of life on earth. The predictable alternation of a damaging (UV irradiation, high-energy sun light) and a non-damaging (low-energy moon light) phase lead to the inclusion of rhythmic repair and timing in molecular life from begin on. The ribonucleopeptide filament responded to the dual qualities of its environment by behaving like an 'oscilloid'. Rhythmically alternating contraction to prevent damage during daytime and expansion to allow self-sustained repair during nighttime initiated the oscillation of the primordial biological timer as a molecular reflection of the macrocosmic time on Earth impacted by the light/dark rhythm. Macrocosmic time is both circular, because days, months and years consist of recurring cycles of light and darkness, and linear, because successive days, months and years are not identical repeats of the preceding ones and follow each other in a row. Corresponding to this yin/yang structure of macrocosmic time, biological time is also cyclical and linear at the same time. Under this perspective, life arose as an earth-bound molecular pattern instructed by celestial rhythms. Interestingly, there exists a correspondence to the dual, mutually complementing molecular basis of life in ancient Chinese mythology. A helically intertwined ribonuclopeptide filament represents an equivalent, a living reflection, of the T'ai chi symbol with its mutually complementing, inseparable black and white components that illustrate the fundamental duality of darkness and light or night and day on Earth. Yang and Yin, and Ch'ien and K'un, constitute the basic duality of the yin/yang philosophy and the ancient Chinese Book of Changes, the I Ging, respectively. Fu-hsi and Nü-kua, the personified versions of this basic duality, are characterised by their helically intertwining snake- or dragon-like lower bodies. Together, they are linking Earth to Heaven.

Psychiatry conventionally regards spirit possession and dramatic healing rituals in non-European societies as forms of abnormality if not mental illness. Roland Littlewood, a psychiatrist and social anthropologist, argues that it is necessary to take into account both social process and personal cultural meaning when explaining psychiatric illness and "deviant" behavior. Littlewood brings anthropological and psychiatric literature to bear on case studies of self-poisoning, agoraphobia, hysteria, chronic fatigue syndrome, post-traumatic stress, male sexual violence, and eating disorders. He contends that Western psychiatric illnesses are themselves "possession states"--patterns by which individual agency is displaced through an idiom of alien intrusion whether of a spirit or a disease.Pathologies of the West is simultaneously an original approach to psychiatric illness in its international perspective and an introduction to recent developments in the social anthropology of medicine. It examines critically the relevance of phenomenological, structural, and ethological approaches to understanding extreme personal experience. This report describes a screening study of in all ninety-nine conventional and emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in the Nordic environment. In addition, extractable organic fluorine (EOF) was analysed. The latter can provide the amount, but not identity, of organofluorine in the samples, which in turn can be used to assess the mass balance between known and unknown PFASs. The study was initiated by the Nordic Screening Group and funded by these and the Nordic Council of Ministers through the Chemicals Group.A total of 102 samples were analyzed in this study, including bird eggs, fish, marine mammals, terrestrial mammals, surface water, WWTP effluents and sludge, and air. Samples were collected by institutes from the participating countries and self-governing areas; Denmark, Faroe Islands, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden.

This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the metallographic study of ancient metals. Metallography is important both conceptually as a microstructural science and in terms of its application to the study of ancient and historic metals. Metallography is a well-established methodology for the characterization of the microstructure of metals, which continues to be significant today in quality control and characterization of metallic properties. Not only does the metallographic examination of ancient metals present its own challenges in terms of sample size and interpretation of evidence, but it must be integrated with archaeological data and cultural research in order to obtain the most meaningful results. Issues of authentication and the establishment of fakes and forgeries of metallic artefacts often involve metallographic evidence of both metal and patina or corrosion interface, as an essential component of such a study. The present volume sets out the basic features of relevant metallic systems, enhanced with a series of examples of typical microstructural types, with illustrative case studies and examples throughout the text derived from studies undertaken by the two authors. This book provides a comprehensive presentation of metallography for archaeologists, archaeometallurgists, conservators, conservation scientists and metallurgists of modern materials.

Every effort has been made to be as inclusive as possible of articles, theses, book chapters and books, both in English and in French, relating to the history of medicine. No single electronic source can replace this bibliography. The contents are divided into three sections. The first is a listing of material expressly biographical. Section two lists material under a wide variety of subject headings related to medicine, and the third is a complete listing of the authors who have contributed these articles. Simply organized and easy to use, this bibliography will be of value to historians, archivists, librarians, and anyone interested in the history of medicine.
