The son and grandson of educators, Roland graduated from Vanderbilt University at age twenty and spent his early working years as a teacher and National Park Service historian in Washington, D.C. Like most members of the “greatest generation,” he saw his world change abruptly on December 7, 1941, with the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He served as a captain in a front-line infantry battalion in Europe, fought in the most crucial sector in the Battle of the Bulge, and earned a Purple Heart fighting in the Remagen Bridgehead. The author describes his many close brushes with death, the loss in battle of numerous cherished friends, the massive destruction of major German cities, and his postwar depression. Blending his own observations with current scholarship, he draws a striking comparison between World War II and the American Civil War. Using the GI Bill, Roland earned his doctorate in history at Louisiana State University and spent time with some of the most recognizable names in the historical profession, including Bell Irvin Wiley, T. Harry Williams, and Francis Butler Simkins. He returned to the military as assistant to the chief historian of the army during the Korean War before pursuing an academic career in earnest. Roland taught history for eighteen years at Tulane University and for another eighteen at the University of Kentucky, at the same time immersing himself in research and writing numerous books and journal articles. He officially retired in 1988 at the age of seventy but continues to be an active scholar, author, editor, and lecturer. A succinct and satisfying epic of the life of a thoughtful citizen-soldier and scholar, My Odyssey through History is also a valuable remembrance of major twentieth-century events.

The history of the peace movement in the United States was one of dramatic change: in the mid-IKWs it consisted of a few provincial societies; by 1912 it had become eminently respectable and listed among its members an impressive number of the nation's leaders; by 1918 it was once again weak and remote from those who formulated national policy. Along with these fluctuations went equally substantial changes of leadership and purpose that, as C. Roland Marchand emphasizes, reflected the motives of the various reform groups that successively joined and dominated the movement. Most of those who joined were not devoted solely to the cause of world peace, but saw in the programs of the movement a chance for the fulfillment of their own mare immediately relevant goals. A gift of a golden necklace and a diary from the girl starts Devo Mannix on a quest to solve a 120-year-old Civil War mystery in an attempt to clear her family name. Upon returning home, Devo finds he has inherited a 1,016-pound antique magical steamer trunk without the key to open it. In a search to find the key, Devo; his talking dog, Speeler; and his friend Julie are held captive by an unscrupulous ex-convict. Speeler, the talking dog, comes up with a plan for escape that sends their captive to the hospital, seeking medical attention. Eventually, the plan backfires, resulting in Devo being thrown into the magical streamer trunk and held prisoner. Devos eventual escape from the trunk solves one of the mysteries of the trunk concerning its contents and the original owner.

I took the train east, all the way to El Paso, Texas. I was sure that the train making twenty miles an hour would get me to the mountain pass west of the Texas line ahead of them. The best they could hope for would be twenty or twenty-five miles a day on horseback. If New Orleans really was their destination they would almost certainly have to use this particular route. Of course they might swing north, but that didn’t make a lot of sense either, travelers using the northern route lately had been killed by roaming bands of renegade Indians that the troopers had not been able to stop. And south, well south, south they would have to swing into Mexico where the beginning of a revolution was in the making. So that would not be a smart move either. No, I would pick me a good spot overlooking the pass and be waiting for Ben and Sam Melody when they came through on their way to Louisiana. I wasn’t exactly sure just how I was going to approach these killers. But I had made a deal with Ruth Tyrell, and if I could, I would bring her two murdering nephews in alive rather than dead. If I could. I even went so far as to borrow two sets of shackles from Marshal Rex Bulett when I left Yuma. So I guess you could say I was thinking I could bring them in alive. Killing them would not be hard, killing a man is easy, capturing him alive is an altogether different thing. If I were able to get them afoot I might get the job done. I deplore killing animals to get the men I’m after, that might be the only choice available to me. And along those lines I bought two cheap horses and lead them behind me when I rode out of El Paso. I instinctively knew that stepping out into the road, blocking their path, and ordering them to surrender would not work. They would force me to shoot them, and being on horseback, the advantage would be on their side. Horses don’t like gunfire, some of them get really jumpy, and will go wild on you in a minute. I might not be able to place my shots and one or both could end up dead. But if they were afoot then the upper hand would fall back on my side. Unless I could get really lucky and walk up on them in a night camp, I might have to shoot their horses from under them. It was a dilemma no doubt, but I had given my word, and if a man has nothing else in this ole world he has that. But I also know that a man’s word, spoken, or implied, along with his belief in self worth is the most important treasure he will ever possess.

In the late fifteenth century, the production of print editions of Claudius Ptolemy’s second-century Geography sparked one of the most significant intellectual developments of the era—the production of mathematically-based, north-oriented maps. The production of world maps in England, however, was notably absent during this "Ptolemaic revival." As a result, the impact of Ptolemy’s text on English geographical thought has been obscured and minimalized, with scholars speculating a possible English indifference to or isolation from European geographic developments. Tracing English geographical thought through the material culture of literary and popular texts, this study provides evidence for the reception and transmission of Ptolemaic-based geography in England during a critical period of geographic innovation and synthesis, one that laid the foundation for modern geographical representation. With evidence from prose romance, book illustration, theatrical performance, cosmological ceilings, and almanacs, Mirror of the World proposes a new, interdisciplinary literary and cartographic history of the influence of Ptolemaic geography in England, one that reveals the lively integration of geographic concepts through narrative and non-cartographic visual forms.
