The Theatre of Timberlake Wertenbaker offers the first comprehensive overview of Wertenbaker's playwriting career which spans more than thirty years of stage plays. At the beginning of the twentieth century Britain was amongst the world leaders in the production of machine tools, yet by the 1980s the industry was in terminal decline. Focusing on the example of Britain's largest machine tool maker, Alfred Herbert Ltd of Coventry, this study charts the wider fortunes of this vital part of the manufacturing sector. Taking a chronological approach, the book explores how during the late nineteenth century the industry developed a reputation for excellence throughout the world, before the challenges of two world wars necessitated drastic changes and reorganisations. Despite meeting these challenges and emerging with confidence into the post-war market place, the British machine tool industry never regained its pre-eminent position, and increasingly lost ground to foreign competition. By using the example of Alfred Herbert Ltd to illuminate the broader economic and business history of the British machine tool industry, this study not only provides a valuable insight into British manufacturing, but also contributes to the ongoing debates surrounding Britain's alleged decline as a manufacturing nation.
Sheffield has been synonymous with steelmaking since the eighteenth century and with cutlery for centuries before that. But while it has an extraordinary variety of industrial buildings connected to its metal trades, there is another side to what is England's least known big city. Set amidst magnificent scenery, it has some surprising survivals of its earlier history, as well as handsome public, commercial and religious buildings designed by its Victorian local architects. The leafy western suburbs that rise towards the Peak District were described by Sir John Betjeman as the finest in England. The 1950s and 60s saw the city famed for its innovative public housing, university buildings and churches. After the decline of its manufacturing sector in the 1980s, major new venues for sport and entertainment, the prize-winning Peace Gardens and exciting new buildings such as the Millennium Galleries, Winter Garden and Persistence Works are visible signs of a renaissance in the city's fortunes. This is the first comprehensive architectural guide to Sheffield. It describes the buildings of the city centre and those of the inner suburbs within a two mile radius of it. A major reason for the lack of understanding of argillaceous rocks is that the key to understanding their history lies in their microfabric. This approach combines such techniques as scanning electron microscopy, x-radiography and thin-section petrography. To find out, a concert pianist videotaped her practice as she learned a new piece for performance, the third movement, Presto, of the Italian Concerto by J.S. Bach. The story of how the pianist went about learning, memorizing and polishing the piece is told from the viewpoints of the pianist (the second author) and of a cognitive psychologist (the first author) observing the practice. The counterpoint between these insider and outsider perspectives is framed by the observations of a social psychologist (the third author) about how the two viewpoints were reconciled. The CD that accompanies the book provides for yet another perspective, allowing the reader to hear the polished performance. Ten years after the U. S. Civil War, a group of men in Rhode Island made a conserted effort to rescue the widely scattered writings of Roger Williams. Few sets were printed though, and under the guidance of Perry Miller, The Complete Writings of Roger Williams were brought back in 1963, but still in short numbers. The present collection now makes these volumes available to readers in their original orthography. The theme of religious liberty is dominant in these volumes, running through Williams's correspondence with John Cotton and on through his famous pair of works on The Bloudy Tenent of Persecution.
