The topic of this book is the theoretical foundations of a theory LSLT -- Lexical Semantic Language Theory - and its implementation in a the system for text analysis and understanding called GETARUN, developed at the University of Venice, Laboratory of Computational Linguistics, Department of Language Sciences. LSLT encompasses a psycholinguistic theory of the way the language faculty works, a grammatical theory of the way in which sentences are analysed and generated -- for this we will be using Lexical-Functional Grammar -- a semantic theory of the way in which meaning is encoded and expressed in utterances -- for this we will be using Situation Semantics -, and a parsing theory of the way in which components of the theory interact in a common architecture to produce the needed language representation to be eventually spoken aloud or interpreted by the phonetic/acoustic language interface. LSLT will then be put to use to show how discourse relations are mapped automatically from text using the tools available in the 4 sub-theories, and in particular we will focus on Causal Relations showing how the various sub-theories contribute to address different types of causality.

This book is the second volume in a set of two books with the same title, but different subtitle, organised around two scientifically distinct but, in fact, strictly interrelated fields of research: sentence level linguistic phenomena; text or discourse level linguistic phenomena where the former is to be described by means of grammatical theories, the latter requires the intervention of extralinguistic knowledge, i.e. knowledge of the world, appropriately stored in lexica or ontologies. the books are organised mainly as an experimental exercise: they illustrate the theoretical background with the output of the system, GETARUNS, that enacts and applies the theory. The architecture of the system is strictly related to the structure of the books. BOOK 1 addresses sentence grammar or what is usually referred to as such by theoretical linguists. It does it by dividing up -- somewhat ideally and sometimes arbitrarily -- what must or needs to be computed at sentence level from what needs not or cannot be computed at the same level, and consequently belongs to discourse grammar. The books also indirectly do another (un)intended subdivision: the one existing between syntax and semantics. Again, it would be impossible not to deal with semantically related issues when talking about syntax or the lexicon. However, semantics with uppercase S, is only treated in Book 2 (already published) where discourse and text level grammar is tackled. Therefore, this book deals with all that concerns the level of sentence grammar in a computational environment, i.e. sentence level parsing. In our approach, knowledge of the world and semantic disambiguation do not interfere with the rules of sentence grammar, and can be thought of as a separate level of computation, provided the lexicon can be structured in such a way to allow a neat subdivision of tasks.
This book addresses state-of-the-art systems and achievements in various topics in the research field of speech and language technologies. In the first section machine translation systems based on large parallel corpora using rule-based and statistical-based translation methods are presented. The Amazonian Ethnobotanical Dictionary presents an exciting new rainforest book, designed and conceived in the rainforest and dedicated to its preservation.The book contains concise accounts of the various uses to which prominent Amazonian plants are put by the local rainforest inhabitants. Although emphasis is placed on plant foods and forest medicines, there is also commentary on other relevant applications, including natural artifacts, house construction, natural pesticides, and ornamental and fodder plants. To many observers, the 1981 election of Henry Cisneros as mayor of San Antonio, Texas, represented the culminating victory in the Chicano community's decades-long struggle for inclusion in the city's political life. Yet, nearly twenty years later, inclusion is still largely an illusion for many working-class and poor Chicanas and Chicanos, since business interests continue to set the city's political and economic priorities. In this book, Rodolfo Rosales offers the first in-depth history of the Chicano community's struggle for inclusion in the political life of San Antonio during the years 1951 to 1991, drawn from interviews with key participants as well as archival research. He focuses on the political and organizational activities of the Chicano middle class in the context of post-World War II municipal reform and how it led ultimately to independent political representation for the Chicano community.
