What kind of dynamics is a piecewise linear system able to display? How may they generate heteroclinic chaos? How can the coexistence of attractors be designed and characterized? Is it necessary to have equilibrium points to generate chaotic behavior? Chaos theory and complex systems are interesting and evolving topics whose investigation from a theoretical and practical point of view constantly leads to arising questions. Interesting behaviors can be observed in self-excited attractors, hidden attractors and non-self-excited attractors.This book presents some fundamentals of linear system theory and recent approaches to design the three classes of chaotic attractors in piecewise linear systems. Each chapter presents a brief description and basic concepts to provide an overview of linear systems theory; chaos and multistability in integer linear systems; hidden and non-self-excited attractors; and fractional approaches. They also provide example systems to illustrate the concepts and design methods introduced. Some current topics under investigation are addressed from an integer order perspective to make the connection with the fractional order counterpart.This textbook provides a comprehensive introduction, methodologies, and analysis tools to study chaotic piecewise linear systems and will be suitable for undergraduate or graduate students interested in the field of chaos and complex dynamics.

We study the evolution of trade globalization in a set of countries in Latin America (mostly the largest ones) and Asia over the past 25 years. Relying on structural gravity models, we first estimate a proxy of trade globalization that captures the ease of trading internationally with respect to trading domestically. Results indicate that the evolution of trade globalization since the mid-1990s has been similar between the two regions, but very heterogeneous within them. Trade globalization has been particularly strong in agriculture, mining and manufacturing, but has lagged in services. The paper also documents that trade globalization has been particularly strong in agriculture, mining and manufacturing, but it lagged in services. Within region heterogeneity is associated to a set of trade policy instruments, including tariffs, non-tariff measures, WTO membership. and trade agreements. Next, we quantify the economic implications of the estimated globalization trends. Simulations of a multi-sector trade model point to heterogeneous long-term impacts of globalization on GDP—some countries exhibiting substantial gains and others experiencing large losses—, with no single sector playing a preponderant role.

This issue is most apparent in the education system, where Mexican American students receive inferior educations and lack access to higher education. Avoiding the overly-theoretical macro-narrative, this book uses case studies and micro-narratives to suggest possible changes and actions to address this issue. It also explores how the erasure of Mexican Americans’ history and identity mirrors society as a whole.

This practically-focused book presents a computational model for detection and analysis of pedestrian features in crowds from video sequences. The study of human behavior is a subject of great scientific interest and probably an inexhaustible source of research. The analysis of pedestrians and groups in crowds is relevant in several areas of application, such as security, entertainment, environmental and public spaces planning and social sciences. Cultural and personality aspects are attributes that can influence personal behavior and affect the group in which individuals belong. In this sense, we consider different ways of characterizing individuals and groups in crowds with respect to their relationship with the geometrical space and time. We discuss and describe an approach to extract and analyse, from the Computer Science point of view, emotions, personalities and cultural aspects from crowds and groups of pedestrians, using Computer Vision techniques. Extracting characteristics from real pedestrians and crowds, benefits other areas, such as: architecture and design (planning spaces to maximize pedestrian and group-environment fit); security and surveillance (design of evacuation plans considering characteristics of the crowds and detection of abnormal events); entertainment (more realistic crowds in movies and games reproducing characteristics from real pedestrians and crowds); social sciences (understanding of human behavior), among others. A big challenge in this area of research is the comparison with real life data. In this book, we successfully compared the results of the proposed approach with Psychology literature, where several studies aimed to analysis human behavior.
