This book draws together theoretical and applied aspects of extracellular hydrolytic enzymes in spoilage, and thus provides information and analysis of interest to microbiologists and biochemists, as well as up-to-date methods and recommendations of value to food scientists and processors. The first section deals with psychrotroph proteinases, lipases, and phospholipases in milk and dairy products, and covers such aspects as producer microorganisms, biochemical classification of enzymes, physical and biochemical properties, thermal stability, regulation and control of synthesis and assay methods. Particular emphasis is placed on commercially important areas such as physical and biochemical effects in food components and influence on shelf life and product quality. The problems of standardization and control of enzymes in dairy products, as well as areas for future research, are critically examined. The poorly understood role of psychrotroph extracellular enzymes in meat, fish, and poultry is also discussed in a separate section under such headings as physical and biochemical effects on tissue and contribution to growth and penetration of the producer organism.

Only a few scattered issues are missing from this series: from 1903, Feb 25, May 13, and Jun 24; from 1904, Jan 6 and Mar 9; and from 1905, Feb 22, Jul 5, Aug 2, Oct 11, Nov 29, and Dec 27. These clippings from the Mountain Eagle come from microfilm purchased from the State Archives in Montgomery. Every issue of the Eagle was examined column by column to capture all available information regarding births, deaths, marriage notices, and relevant news items and information regarding the early history of Walker County and the surrounding area. Death notices were compared against available cemetery records at FindAGrave.com and were annotated. The history of Walker County is written in the pages of its early newspapers. This book will be a valuable asset to the serious student of Walker County genealoty and history.

Palmer in June of 1901. Palmer sold the paper to R.L. and J.E. Griffin in 1902, but by the end of January of 1903, the paper was purchased by Joseph Robert Rosson. Cullman County was established in 1877 in large part from the west side of Blount and the east side of Winston counties. Today, the few old cemeteries which existed in those counties in the early days are found within the borders of Cullman. The cemetery listings in this four volume set were conducted by the author beginning in 2003 and ending in early 2006. An attempt was made to personally visit every cemetery in Cullman County and record information from each readable monument. Volume 3 of this series covers alphabetically cemeteries G through M, beginning with the Good Hope Baptist Church Cemetery and concluding with the Mt. Vernon (West) Baptist Church Cemetery. The volumes are filled with photos of many of the old cemetery sites and notes describing the company and unit of most of the old Civil War era veterans. This set of books is vital to any serious student of Cullman County genealogy and history.

The Blount Count Journal published in Oneonta from 1909 to 1918. Compared to other Blount County papers, the Journal was only a small blip on the journalistic radar in Blount County. However, it is an often overlooked and untapped source of great genealogical and historical knowledge. While some of the articles mirror those published in its contemporary publications, often the Journal captured other obituaries and news missed by the Democrat. Most of the original copies of the Journal were found in the court house in Oneonta. These were reviewed for notices of births, marriages, obituaries and interesting news items. Missing issues from the court house were reviewed at the State Archives in Montgomery. This book will add to the body of knowledge of Blount County, Alabama and will serve as a useful tool for area genealogists and historians.

Where do children go and what do they do outdoors? How do they evaluate their own environment? What are their likes and dislikes? What would they like to see added or changed? How can the outdoor environment support healthy child development? How is the impact of the environment affected by its social and physical characteristics? How can its developmental impact be strengthened through public policy? These are some of the questions addressed by Childhood’s Domain, originally published in 1986, in which children, as ‘expert’ research collaborators, describe their largely unseen life outdoors. On field trips to secret play places around their homes, in streets, in parks, and in places laid waste and abandoned by adult society, they reveal both the pleasure and difficulties of play in the city. A central concept of the book is a new term, terra ludens, which represents the accumulated developmental support that each child receives from her or his personal play spaces. Terra ludens reflects the degree to which each child acquires an intuitive sense of how the world is by playing with it. Field research for the book was conducted in London, Stevenage New Town and Stoke-on-Trent. Neighbourhood sites were deliberately chosen to contrast and compare children’s reactions to the characteristics of ‘big city’, ‘new town’ and ‘old industrial city’ environments. The most interesting experiences were encountered with children in Stoke-on-Trent. Here, in former mineral workings functioning as ‘playgrounds’ equipped with relics from the heyday of the industrial revolution, in new open spaces reclaimed from industrial ‘wastelands’, and in older parks dating from Victorian times, children demonstrated the creative possibilities of a landscape of opportunities lacking in the other two sites. Even so, children in all three sites revealed great ingenuity in making do with whatever resources they could find to create viable play environments for themselves.

The Blount County News was established by Lawrence H. Mathews in Blount Springs as the Blount Springs News in March of 1877. In 1887, Mathews' newspaper merged with the Blount County Dispatch to become the Blount County News-Dispatch. Mathews moved his paper for the last time in 1889 when Oneonta became the new county seat. Mathews died in 1896 but his paper continued until 1903 when it succumbed to the dominance of a new paper called the Southern Democrat. Microfilmed copies of the News-Dispatch were studied page by page and within this volume are found every mention of births, marriages, deaths, obituaries, and news important to the genealogy and history of Blount County. This volume also contains a rare and complete collection of Mary Gordon Duffee's Sketches of Blount County. Hidden nuggets of information of interest to the descendants of Blount County pioneers are found within this volume.

To understand their achievement, Steedman theorizes hustling as not only a practice born out of necessity but also an inventive labor in its own right—one that can create new spaces of community by carving new entrepreneurial pathways. Through original empirical field research gathered over eight months in Nairobi, Steedman describes how female filmmakers go about trying to create their films, as well as the challenges they face in distributing those films in their local market. Along the way, she traces the history of the industry over the last fifteen years, the lack of state support for these filmmakers’ undertakings, the low social standing of the profession, and the transnational conflicts that arise when Euro-American funding is at the heart of Kenyan cinema. Gender has become a commodity. Today's economy trades in symbols and narratives as much as in objects. As such, gender can be bought and sold, produced as an object, and demands constant work. What makes the commodity object seem alien, mysterious, and even threatening, Marx tells us, is that the worker's social relations - his subjectivity - are taken away from him and stamped into the object which then appears to have a life of its own, disassociated and threatening. Gender Commodity argues that gender is a social relation made into such an alienated object. In today's situation of radical insecurity, people are reaching out and identifying with objects - including symbolic ones - that promise quite falsely that they grant stability, duration, and fulfillment, and gender has been made into one of those. Gender Commodity is an interdisciplinary study that brings literary studies into dialogue with the surrounding mediascape around issues of gender, culture, and economy. It also asks how the symbolic production of gender commodity at home informs an imagination of gender policy as it reaches out globally. As it criticizes gender-affirmative feminism for participating in the culture of the commodity, Gender Commodity also looks to feminism to imagine gender otherwise.

As with the first five books of this series, microfilm was obtained from the State Archives in Montgomery and Wallace College at Hanceville and reviewed, but the originals from the Cullman County Court House was the primary source. A page by page examination of the film and originals was conducted with every birth, death, marriage, obituary, and some news items important to the history and development of Cullman County was recorded. This book is important to any genealogist or historian with connections to Cullman County and contains many rare accounts and mentions of the earliest settlers of the region.
