ONE WITH GOD These poems are my revelation of how through spiritual intervention, change and growth overcame my life, as I became One With God. There were those who prayed for me and with me. Through those prayers and my faith I grew in my personal relationship with the Father. I became one with Him through the Holy Spirit and His divine intervention. As you read these poems, should some circumstance bring back a recollection or you feel that you have been in similar situations, it is my hope that you too will come to agree that He is truly a way maker but mostly that You cant beat Gods giving. I pray that you will find the inspiration and come to the same conclusion in reading these poems as I felt when I wrote them, and that is Nobody can love me like Jesus for His goodness endureth forever. The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) pitted conservative forces including the army, the Church, the Falange (fascist party), landowners, and industrial capitalists against the Republic, installed in 1931 and supported by intellectuals, the petite bourgeoisie, many campesinos (farm laborers), and the urban proletariat. Provoking heated passions on both sides, the Civil War soon became an international phenomenon that inspired a number of literary works reflecting the impact of the war on foreign and national writers. While the literature of the period has been the subject of scholarship, women's literary production has not been studied as a body of work in the same way that literature by men has been, and its unique features have not been examined. Addressing this lacuna in literary studies, this volume provides fresh perspectives on well-known women writers, as well as less studied ones, whose works take the Spanish Civil War as a theme. The authors represented in this collection reflect a wide range of political positions. Writers such as Maria Zambrano, Mercè Rodoreda, and Josefina Aldecoa were clearly aligned with the Republic, whereas others, including Mercedes Salisachs and Liberata Masoliver, sympathized with the Nationalists. Most, however, are situated in a more ambiguous political space, although the ethics and character portraits that emerge in their works might suggest Republican sympathies. Taken together, the essays are an important contribution to scholarship on literature inspired by this pivotal point in Spanish history.

Cantica, better known as Inno delle nazioni / Hymn of the Nations, commissioned from Italy's foremost composer to represent the newly independent nation at the 1862 London International Exhibition, served as a national voice of pride and of protest for Italy across two centuries and in two very different political situations. The book unpacks, for the first time, the full history of Verdi's composition from its creation, performance, and publication in the 1860s through its appropriation as purposeful social and political commentary and its perception by American broadcast media as a 'weapon of art' in the mid twentieth century. Based on largely untapped primary archival and other documentary sources, journalistic writings, and radio and film scripts, the project discusses the changing meanings of the composition over time. It not only unravels the complex history of the work in the nineteenth century, of greater significance it offers the first fully documented study of the performances, radio broadcast, and filming of the work by the renowned Italian conductor Arturo Toscanini during World War II. In presenting new evidence about ways in which Verdi's music was appropriated by expatriate Italians and the US government for cross-cultural propaganda in America and Italy, it addresses the intertwining of Italian and American culture with regard to art, politics, and history; and investigates the ways in which the press and broadcast media helped construct a musical weapon that traversed ethnic, aesthetic, and temporal boundaries to make a strong political statement.

Roberta Piazza's book is a linguistic investigation of the dialogue of Italian cinema covering a selection of films from the 1950s to the present day. It looks at how speech is dealt with in studies of the cinema and tackles the lack of engagement with dialogue in film studies. It explores the representation of discourse in cinema -- the way particular manifestations of verbal interaction are reproduced in film. Whereas 'representation' generally refers to the language used in texts to assign meaning to a group and its social practices, here discourse representation more directly refers to the relationship between real-life and cinematic discourse. Piazza analyses how fictional dialogue reinterprets authentic interaction in order to construe particular meanings. Beginning by exploring the relationship between discourse and genre, the second half of the book takes a topic-based approach and reflects on the themes of narrative and identity. The analysis carried out takes on board the multi-semiotic and multimodal components of film discourse. The book uses also uses concepts and methodologies from pragmatics, conversation analysis and discourse analysis.

She is an adventurer, always have been and perhaps always will be. There is so much on this earth to do and yet, after a while it becomes limited. It's not a fancy car, nor clothes, nor shoes; it's the heart that matters. She has traveled the world in an airplane. She's ridden a submarine and dived beneath the sea. She's seen the tallest mountains in the world. She spent a week in the Amazon, in the jungle and on the river. She hasn't been to outer space yet, but she's flown high in a hot air balloon. She cuddled with a koala in Australia and necked with a giraffe in Africa. She rode a camel and walked the Wall in China. She also rode an elephant in India. She went up Mt. Nebo to see the Promised Land. She always wanted to do these things, so she did them. Prior years of her life seem like a wisp of smoke. Mere days. The days whisk by now faster than ever. As you get older, you know what she means. She's had a beautiful life, past and present, but she knows this is just a shadow of what is to come in Heaven. Now she focuses on storing up treasures in the place that is really important. A place where her eighty years here is about sixty minutes there. A place where, even with all her reading, she still knows very little about, except that she is sure she wants to go there. A place where, when people ask her about it, she can only say, "Ain't been there, ain't done that yet, but I will." About the Author Roberta M. Baty has a vagabond heart and has discovered a writing talent to share her adventures in over 65 foreign countries. She grew up in Des Moines, Iowa until, at 29 she vacationed in Hawaii. She decided to move there so she could travel easily to Asian countries and the South Pacific. After ten years she returned to the Mainland to finish her career with the Telephone Company. Having worked in Engineering providing circuits for radio and television broadcasts in Iowa, special circuits for NASA space shots and celebrities like Jackie Kennedy and Elvis Presley in Hawaii, then in Missouri, drafting new subdivisions to provide buried telephone service, she retired in 1992. Each year at vacation time she would head out with a friend or co-worker to a new location in a different country to explore their culture, see the scenery, meet new people and enjoy the food. Since retirement she has volunteered for 19 years with Multiple Sclerosis patients in the swimming pool to help them improve their life capabilities. She says it has helped her too, plus she likes to bring them back small souvenirs, since they are unable to travel. Another volunteer project she enjoys is Friends of the Library book sale twice yearly. Her motto is: "Seek new horizons and you will discover the World." If you have read her first book, you'll enjoy reading "Far Away Places" too.
