Robert Kindler's seminal work is a comprehensive and unsettling account of the Soviet campaign to forcefully sedentarize and collectivize the Kazakh clans. Viewing the nomadic life as unproductive, and their lands unused and untilled, Stalin and his inner circle pursued a campaign of violence and subjugation, rather than attempting any dialog or cultural assimilation. The results were catastrophic, as the conflict and an ensuing famine (1931-1933) caused the death of nearly one-third of the Kazakh population. Hundreds of thousands of nomads became refugees and a nomadic culture and social order were essentially destroyed in less than five years. Kindler provides an in-depth analysis of Soviet rule, economic and political motivations, and the role of remote and local Soviet officials and Kazakhs during the crisis. This is the first English-language translation of an important and harrowing history, largely unknown to Western audiences prior to Kindler’s study. Any consideration of ancient Mesoamerica, and more particularly the lowland Maya region, must include the great site of Tikal, Guatemala. Excavation and research were conducted at Tikal under the auspices of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology and the government of Guatemala from 1956 through 1969. The painstaking analysis of the results of those years of fieldwork continues, and the results will be published in a projected total of 39 final reports. This book is an outgrowth of research contributions and teaching experiences by all the authors in applying modern fluid mechanics to problems of pollutant transport and mixing in the water environment. Skill Acquisition and Training describes the building blocks of cognitive, motor, and teamwork skills, and the factors to take into account in training them. The basic processes of perception, cognition and action that provide the foundation for understanding skilled performance are discussed in the context of complex task requirements, individual differences, and extreme environmental demands. The role of attention in perceiving, selecting, and becoming aware of information, in learning new information, and in performance is described in the context of specific skills. In 2009, Chicago spent millions of dollars to create programs to prevent gang violence in some of its most disadvantaged neighborhoods. Yet in spite of the programs, violence has grown worse in some of the very neighborhoods that the violence prevention programs were intented to help. While public officials and social scientists often attribute the violence - and the failure of the programs - to a lack of community in poor neighborhoods, closer study reveals another source of community division: local politics. Through an ethnographic case study of Chicago's Little Village neighborhood, Wounded City dispells the popular belief that a lack of community is the primary source of violence, arguing that competition for political power and state resources often undermine efforts to reduce gang violence. Robert Vargas argues that the state, through the way it governs, can contribute to distrust and division among community members, thereby undermining social cohesion. The strategic actions taken by police officers, politicians, nonprofit organizations, and gangs to collaborate or compete for power and resources can vary block by block, triggering violence on some blocks while successfully preventing it on others. A rich blend of urban politics, sociology, and criminology, Wounded City offers a cautionary tale for elected officials, state agencies, and community based organizations involved with poor neighborhoods.
After conducting a comprehensive literature search, the authors undertook a meta-analysis to examine the association between correctional education and reductions in recidivism, improvements in employment after release from prison, and other outcomes. The study finds that receiving correctional education while incarcerated reduces inmates' risk of recidivating and may improve their odds of obtaining employment after release from prison.

In this workbook companion, we expand on the strategies presented in the book by supplying need-based practical and specific strategies for implementation of a variety of other subject matters. The book provides contributions from a mix of teacher educators and practitioners. We focus on a specific targeted group, high school age adolescents. Our targeted readers are new and experienced teachers developing curricula for this group.
There is a dynamism among current ideas on AD/HD research which is extraordinarily encouraging as we look to the future and the resolution of the problems of AD/HD. We can have more confidence than of late that we can determine and rate the problems grouped under the rubric of AD/HD (chapter 1), delineate them with respect to some prominent (if not all) related behavioural disruptions (chapter 2) and have some confidence in an inter-cultural commonality of a problem that may respond to attention from professional care-givers (chapter 4). We are standing already at the second stage of an understanding and attribution of genetic and environmentally mediated traits (chapter 3, 9 and 10): that the way forward (towards which feature(s) trigger(s) which effect(s)) may involve tens of stages is exciting - for the first results are at hand (e.g., DRD4). Which amine systems (DA, NA, 5-HT, adrenaline, acetylcholine) intervene with anomalous function is better understood qualitatively than quantitatively (chapters 5-8). Perhaps this link in the chain of understanding remains in the most primitive state, among the fields discussed in this book. synaptic bouton (e.g., vesicle transporters, and neurexins), let alone the rules for extraneuronal uptake and release in neighbouring systems (e.g. DA by NA systems)? This knowledge will determine future generations of biologically based treatments. Chapter 12 and 13 have illustrated how (in principle) we may determine, with simple neurophysiological means, for whom precisely will these work, and on what neural systems and psychological functions are they effective. The current ideas are promising, a body of knowledge is there, many details still need to be teased out, but the way forward has been indicated.
Herbert Henri Jasper is a scientist whose research activities have initiated and encompassed many of the major themes of neuroscience. He has pioneered in single unit recording, chronic neuronal studies, neurochemistry, electroencephalography, and many other disciplines. His students now hold important positions in universities and hospitals around the world. From July 21 to 23, 1986, a symposium entitled Neurotransmitters and Cortical Function: From Molecules to Mind was held in Montreal to honor Professor Jasper and to continue his pioneering efforts. The following chapters originated in that meeting. They summarize the current v vi PREFACE status of our knowledge in some of the fields influenced by Professor Jasper. They share a focus on neurotransmitters in cortical function, where we presume higher mental events originate. Professor Jasper has made contributions to the understanding of three different classes of neuro transmitters: GABA, acetylcholine, and catecholamines. It is an interest in trying to link neu rochemical events to some aspects of complex brain function and behavior that has characterized his work, and it is this philosophy that led to the present symposium to honor him.
