The bicycle has long been a part of American culture but few would describe it as an essential element of American identity in the same way that it is fundamental to European and Asian cultures. Instead, American culture has had a more turbulent relationship with the bicycle. First introduced in the United States in the 1830s, the bicycle reached its height of popularity in the 1890s as it evolved to become a popular form of locomotion for adults. Two decades later, ridership in the United States collapsed. As automobile consumption grew, bicycles were seen as backward and unbecoming—particularly for the white middle class. Turpin chronicles the story of how the bicycle’s image changed dramatically, shedding light on how American consumer patterns are shaped over time. Turpin identifies the creation and development of childhood consumerism as a key factor in the bicycle’s evolution. In an attempt to resurrect dwindling sales, sports marketers reimagined the bicycle as a child’s toy. By the 1950s, it had been firmly established as a symbol of boyhood adolescence, further accelerating the declining number of adult consumers. Tracing the ways in which cycling suffered such a loss in popularity among adults is fundamental to understanding why the United States would be considered a "car" culture from the 1950s to today. In the mid-60s, a group of studio musicians turned an Alka-Seltzer commercial into a novelty hit, "No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach's In)". Unwilling to go on the road to promote it, a new group was formed by Dan Hamilton, Joe Frank Carollo and Tommy Reynolds, who were then credited with the song. When its popularity waned, the three formed a new group using the name "Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds." Their first record resulted in the hit song "Don't Pull Your Love," and earned a Gold record, Reynolds unexpectedly left the band. Soon Hamilton, Carollo and Alan Dennison signed a contract with Playboy Records, with the stipulation they keep their original band name. They struck gold again with their first record for Playboy, "Fallin' In Love." It was Playboy's only #1 pop hit. This is the story about how this great soft rock group came to be. It looks carefully at the group's entire music legacy and explores previously unreleased songs that were discovered during research for the book.

The Chicago Tribune's Bill Dahl praised Robert Pruter's Doowop for "vividly describ ing] an enchanting time on the local music scene, when a handful of teenagers could taste rock 'n' roll stardom with harmonies they cooked up on a street corner." Pruter foraged sources from fanzines to the Chicago Defender and conducted extensive interviews in cooking up Doowop, which chronicles the careers of such legendary 1950s groups as the Flamingos, the Moonglows, the Spaniels, and the El Dorados, along with virtually every other Chicago doowop group that contributed to that era.
Nearly half of all American high school students participate in sports teams. Pruter’s work traces the history of high school sports from the student-led athletic clubs of the 1800s through to the establishment of educator control of high school sports under a national federation by the 1930s.
