Convivence is a new word in English. Its root comes from the Spanish word “Convivencia”, emerging in the 12th century. During the year 2004, the French Academy included it in its Dictionary (“convivance”). It means a situation where different communities and human groups live together, maintaining neighborliness, harmony, and exchanging relations. The United Nations General Assembly, in its resolution 72/130, declared 16 May of each year, the International Day of Living Together in Peace, (or ‘Convivence’) “as a means of regularly mobilizing the efforts of the international community to promote peace, tolerance, inclusion, understanding and solidarity”. This book explores the main issues and needs around convivence at the local, regional, national, and international levels. Our fragmented world is facing vast crises: climate change, migrations, growing inequalities, geopolitical clashes, a rise of nationalism, identity conflicts, and racism. The objective is to show that the pursuit of Convivence can be a driving ethical issue of tomorrow. Projected situations will be described in a series of scenarios, explaining what paths should be taken to make this aspiration for peace possible, for solidarity beyond coexistence and conviviality. This thought-provoking book will be of interest to researchers and students in Peace Studies, Sociology and International Relations, as well as those working in community issues in governments, NGOs and the private sector.

This thesis addresses two fundamental areas in contemporary organic chemistry: synthesis of natural products and catalytic asymmetric synthesis. Firstly, a new methodology, developed by our research group, which allows the asymmetric synthesis of lactones, a structural unit ubiquitous in natural products, was utilised in the synthesis of a number of natural product analogues that showed significant biological activity. Secondly, the development of a catalytic asymmetric synthesis of a key structural motif present in a number of natural products and pharmaceuticals was accomplished. During the course of this work we discovered dual stereo control, which is significant because it allows the configuration of a new stereo centre to be controlled by a simple change of proton source.

Knowledge has been described as being like an expanding sphere with the volume of knowledge contacting a surface on the unknown. In doing research on MS, it is not enough to know clinical neurology or neurochemistry or neuroanatomy or pathology; it is important to understand the many other areas that relate to them. This volume provides an overview of MS-related research and will benefit many investigators in the field and help to advance our efforts to cure this, thus far intractable, disease. It is now more than 160 years since the first clinical-pathological descriptions of cases of multiple sclerosis and more than 130 years since the classic clinical description and development of diagnostic criteria by Charcot, yet MS remains an enigma. After decades of intense effort to find the cause, no cause has been clearly identified and the disease remains poorly understood. Despite the introduction of immunomodulatory therapies and immunosuppressive regimens, MS remains a devastating disease. While a great deal of progress has been made, much remains to be done. Our understanding of the disease remains limited, treatments remain inadequate, and comprehensive management all too rare. This volume is an overview of the basic sciences as they relate to MS and will provide clinicians and investigators a better understanding of the basic aspects of the disease. While it is possible to find excellent reviews of almost any aspect of MS, few attempts have been made to bring these very different aspects together in a single source. This volume is a companion to Multiple Sclerosis: Diagnosis, Medical Management, and Rehabilitation, edited by Drs. Jack S. Burks and Kenneth P. Johnson. Together, they represent an attempt to comprehensively cover the field of MS from basic research to comprehensive management and to provide a broad overview for those interested in understanding the disease better or in pursuing MS research.

For years prior to the pandemic, clinical trials have shown improvement and cures of pulmonary disorders with the intravenous administration of mesenchymal stem cells. These cells are administered into the venous system, pass through the heart, and then lodge in the capillary network of the lungs where they decrease scar tissue and stimulate the regeneration of new lung tissue. The known benefits of cell therapy for pulmonary disease has been the foundation for the use of allogeneic stem cells to effectively treat (and in some cases cure) COVID-19-related lung disorders.
