Biography, Robert M. Arnold Robert Arnold is a lifetime resident of Virginia and currently the President of Eagle Eye Enterprises LLC, a company he founded in 1997. Eagle Eye Enterprises offers RADAR and LASER training, agency evaluations, and consulting to Law Enforcement agencies nationwide. Mr. Arnold developed RADAR and LASER training software that is in use nationwide, to include Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy. His training and software has raised the bar in police training and has set the industry standard to an unprecedented level. He has trained and developed NVCJA instructors in the field of RADAR. Master Police Officer Arnold retired in March of 2011 from the Prince William County Police Department after serving over twenty-seven years. He is a founding member of his department's Motor Squad that was created in 1987 and he remained there until his 2011 retirement. During his Police career he served ten years as a Special Weapons and Tactics team member, Certified DCJS Instructor in the areas of RADAR, LASER, Police Motorcycle, and Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC). He received countless commendations for his work throughout his career. He authored his department's motor squad operational and training manuals and escort protocol. He developed and implemented his motor squad's training program and provided continuous motorcycle training and retraining to all squad members until his 2011 retirement. His motorcycle training approach included a skills level evaluation program that measured individual riding levels. This program was divided into five categories of riding proficiency that proved to develop a rider's incentive to set goals to achieve greater riding skills... Shortly after attending a Virginia Instructor Development course in 1990 and successfully completing his RADAR Instructor certification through the Virginia Commonwealth University, he developed a speed enforcement training program that he managed and retained the Lead Instructor role until his retirement. His program evolved over the years and is considered an industry leading training program throughout the nation. He is considered an expert in his field and has provided expert testimony during RADAR and LASER cases in the Circuit Courts of Prince William and Madison counties. The Prince William County Police Department was the first Law Enforcement Agency in Virginia to use the speed measuring device, LIDAR. Robert is credited with its implementation and provided LIDAR training seminars throughout the state of Virginia to assist other jurisdictions during their startup phase. His efforts lead to the successful statewide expansion of this speed measuring equipment that resulted in legislation authorizing the use statewide. Robert's career roles included adjunct Instructor positions with the Prince William County and the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academies. He provided instruction to hundreds of law enforcement students in the operation of emergency vehicles and police motorcycles. He devoted his entire career to achieving expert status in his field and has shared his expertise through the training of countless Law Enforcement Officials.

The Earliest Europeans explores the early origins of man in Europe through the perspective of ‘a year in the life’: how hominins in the Lower Palaeolithic coped with the year-round practical challenges of mid-latitude Europe with its distinctive temperatures, seasonality patterns, and available resources. Current research has provided increasingly robust archaeological and Quaternary Science records, but there are ongoing uncertainties as to both the earliest Europeans’ specific survival strategies and behaviours, and the character of their dispersals into Europe. In short, how sustained and ‘successful’ were the individual phases of European occupation by Lower Palaeolithic hominins and what sorts of ‘human’ where they? Using a season-by-season chapter structure to explore, for example, the contrasting demands and opportunities of winter versus summer survival, Hosfield explores how foods and other resources would vary across the four seasons in quantity and quality, and the resulting implications for hominin behaviours. Text boxes provide the background on key issues, and the book draws on a range of supporting evidence including technology (e.g. the nature of Lower Palaeolithic stone tools; the evidence for organic tools), hominin life history (e.g. the length of infant dependency; the nature of ‘parenting’; the implications of different mating models; the Social Brain Hypothesis), cognitive studies (e.g. brain scanning research into possible planning capabilities) and potential bias in the archaeological record (e.g. in terms of what is and isn’t preserved). By testing the likelihood of different scenarios by comparing short-term, site-based insights with long-term, regional trends, Hosfield is able to out forward ideas on how our earliest European ancestors survived and what their lives were like.

a c 9 h In presenting this monograph, I would like to indicate both its orientation as well as my personal reasons for being interested in discrete iterations (that is, iterations on a generally very large,jinite set). While working in numerical analysis I have been interested in two main aspects: - the algorithmic aspect: an iterative algorithm is a mathematical entity which behaves in a dynamic fashion. Even if it is started far from a solution, it will often tend to get closer and closer. - the mathematical aspect: this consists of a coherent and rigorous analy sis of convergence, with the aid of mathematical tools (these tools are mainly the use of norms for convergence proofs, the use of matrix algebra and so on). One may for example refer to the algorithmic and mathematical aspects of Newton's method in JRn as well as to the QR algorithm for eigenvalues of matrices. These two algorithms seem to me to be the most fascinating algorithms in numerical analysis, since both show a remarkable practical efficiency even though there exist relatively few global convergence results for them.

Minimizing this dependency and promoting autonomy has become a major focus of policy and ethics in gerontology. Yet most of these discussions are divorced from the day-to-day reality of long-term care and are implicitly based on concepts of autonomy derived from acute medical care settings. Promoting autonomy in long-term care, however, is a complex task which requires close attention to everyday routines and a fundamental rethinking of the meaning of autonomy. This timely work is based on an observational study of two different types of settings which provide long-term care for the elderly. The authors offer detailed descriptions of the organizational patterns and routine practices that erode autonomy of the elderly. Their observations lead to a substantial rethinking of what the concept of autonomy means in long-term care. The book concludes with suggestions on how the autonomy of elderly individuals in long-term care institutions might be promoted.
