Robert Loh is at pains to make clear that he could not have survived, and indeed lived a relatively privileged life in communist China without giving in to much that he hated and despised.

Shannon faces two major threats as he heads into the perilous assignment: knowing that he is expendable, and the Triads. An ancient Chinese gang operating out of Hong Kong, the Triads are dependent on the Golden Triangle for their supply of heroin. Once they learn that their supply is threatened, they will not hesitate to hunt Shannon down for the sole purpose of eliminating him.

As Mississippi's attorney general from 1956 to 1969, Joe T. Patterson led the legal defense for Jim Crow in the state. He was inaugurated for his first term two months before the launch of the Sovereignty Commission—charged “to protect the sovereignty of Mississippi from encroachment thereon by the federal government”—which made manifest a century-old states' rights ideology couched in the rhetoric of massive resistance. Despite the dubious legal foundations of that agenda, Patterson supported the organization's mission from the start and served as an ex-officio leader on its board for the rest of his life. Patterson was also a card-carrying member of the segregationist Citizens' Council and, in his own words, had “spent many hours and driven many miles advocating the basic principles for which the Citizens' Councils were originally organized.” Few ever doubted his Jim Crow credentials. That is until September 1962 and the integration of the University of Mississippi by James Meredith. That fall Patterson stepped out of his entrenchment by defying a circle of white power brokers, but only to a point. His seeming acquiescence came at the height of the biggest crisis for Mississippi's racist order. Yet even after the Supreme Court decreed that Meredith must enter the university, Patterson opposed any further desegregation and despised the federal intervention at Ole Miss. Still he faced a dilemma that confronted all white southerners: how to maintain an artificially elevated position for whites in southern society without resorting to violence or intimidation. Once the Supreme Court handed down its decision in Meredith v. Fair, the state attorney general walked a strategic tightrope, looking to temper the ruling's impact without inciting the mob and without retreating any further. Patterson and others sought pragmatic answers to the dilemma of white southerners, not in the name of civil rights but to offer a more durable version of white power. His finesse paved the way for future tactics employing duplicity and barely yielding social change while deferring many dreams.

Herbert Henri Jasper is a scientist whose research activities have initiated and encompassed many of the major themes of neuroscience. When Super Typhoon Joan arrived in October 1970, an unofficial truce began. Air crewman faced masses of Vietnamese civilians outside their base perimeters for the first time. Could we trust them not to shoot? Could they trust us not to drop them off in a detention camp? Truces never last, but while they do, life changes for everyone involved. The “typhoon truce” stopped the war for three days in northern I Corps—that area bordering the demilitarized zone separating South Vietnam from North. Then, less than a week later, Super Typhoon Kate hit the same area with renewed fury. As the entire countryside was flooded, the people faced war and natural disaster at the same time. No one but the Americans had the resources to help the people who lived in the lowlands, and so they did. The everyday dangers they faced were only magnified by low clouds and poor visibility. But the aircrews of the 101st Airborne went out to help anyway. In this book, we see how, for a brief period during an otherwise vicious war, saving life took precedence over bloody conflict.

On first consideration, acute myeloid leukemia (AML) represents a nearly insurmountable challenge in terms of understanding it at the molecular level in large part because of its immense heterogeneity as well as its variability across different age groups. In addition, while significant progress has been made in the overall survival of subsets of patients with AML, many continue to show little progress in terms of positive treatment outcomes. Cytogenetic and initial molecular studies have resulted in the ability to stratify patients into specific risk categories that predict favorable-, intermediate- and poor-risk outcomes. However, these categories are limited in their ability to predict accurately how individual patients will respond to therapy and have not resulted in the ability to treat effectively patients with specific treatments. They have, however, resulted in excluding hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for patients with favorable-risk disease. Genome-wide analysis promises to improve both treatment and outcomes. The initial studies using whole-exon or whole-genome sequencing identified mutations in several novel genes that surprisingly were involved in regulating DNA methylation and chromatin structure. Subsequently, mutations were found in genes encoding transcription factors, signaling pathway modulators and genes involved in RNA splicing. Further analyses have identified mutations in key elements of miRNAs. Genome-wide methylation studies have highlighted key patterns that track with specific cytogenetic and gene mutations. Such epigenetic studies have led to the use of treatments directed to altering chromatin structure and DNA methylation. These treatments remain targeted specifically at specific enzymatic components of chromatin structure and function, but their key molecular consequences remain unclear and clinical responses unpredictable. RNA sequencing has led to the identification of both novel pathways of leukemia cell survival and unexpected fusion transcripts, which may ultimately be therapeutically targeted.
