After three decades of experience pursuing my mission of helping folks get to their Point B, I've learned a few axioms of life that I want to share with you: Too many folks never consider that they have control of their own destiny. As a result, they never know where they're going, and they end up taking too many dead-end trails that lead to nowhere because they never understood they had the right and the ability to choose their Point B. Too many folks procrastinate even the micro-decisions that affect their life path. As a result, they are frozen by indecisiveness when it comes to the big decisions because they never take responsibility for defining their own Point B. Too many folks consider two weeks to be long term planning. As a result, they end up making reflex decisions that get them off the right path because they never defined their right Point B past a two-week timeline. If you are already in a long-term relationship, you and your significant-other need to have a similar desired Point B destination and a shared path to reach it. If you don't share the same Point B, at some other point your paths will probably go different directions, with the result that each of you may end up going your separate ways. You and your career goals need to have a similar desired Point B destination. If you are even considering starting a company, your very first decision needs to be your definition of the right-for-you personal Point B. Not everyone is cut out to be an entrepreneur, and it may make a lot more sense for you to work for someone else. Even then, your career decisions need to be congruent with your personal Point B. The choice between starting and running a company, versus working for someone else's company will depend upon what is right for you. But either way, your personal desired Point B needs to be on the same path as your business Point B -- or you will have dragons galore that will need to be slayed on a regular basis. The politics of building dams and levees and other structures are just part of the policies determining how American rivers are managed or mismanaged. America's well-being depends upon the health of those rivers and important decisions go beyond just dam-building or dam removal. American rivers are suffering from poor water quality, altered flows, and diminished natural habitat. Current efforts by policymakers to change the ways American rivers are managed range from the removal of dams to the simulation of seasonal flows to the restoration of habitat, all with varying degrees of success. Efforts to restore American rivers are clearly delineated by William Lowry in Dam Politics as he looks at how public policy and rivers interact, examines the physical differences in rivers that affect policies, and analyzes the political differences among the groups that use them. He argues that we are indeed moving into an era of restoration (defined in part as removing dams but also as restoring the water quality, seasonal flows, and natural habitat that existed before structural changes to the rivers), and seeks to understand the political circumstances that affect the degree of restoration. Lowry presents case studies of eight river restoration efforts, including dam removals on the Neuse and Kennebec rivers, simulation of seasonal flows on the Colorado river, and the failed attempt to restore salmon runs on the Snake river. He develops a typology of four different kinds of possible change--dependent on the parties involved and the physical complexity of the river--and then examines the cases using natural historical material along with dozens of interviews with key policymakers. Policy approaches such as conjunctive water management, adaptive management, alternative licensing processes, and water marketing are presented as possible ways of using our rivers more wisely. Dam Politics provides a useful and systematic account of how American waterways are managed and how current policies are changing. American rivers are literally the lifeblood of our nation. Lowry has written a lively and accessible book that makes it clear as a mountain stream that it matters deeply how those rivers are managed.

By applying multilevel modeling to hierarchical data structures, this book illustrates how the use of these methods can facilitate social problems research and the formulation of social policies. It gives the reader access to working data sets, computer code, and analytic techniques, while at the same time carefully discussing issues of causality in such models. This book innovatively: •Develops procedures for studying social, economic, and human development. • Uses typologies to group (i.e., classify or nest) the level of random macro-level factors. • Estimates models with Poisson, binomial, and Gaussian end points using SAS's generalized linear mixed models (GLIMMIX) procedure. • Selects appropriate covariance structures for generalized linear mixed models. • Applies difference-in-differences study designs in the multilevel modeling of intervention studies. •Calculates propensity scores by applying Firth logistic regression to Goldberger-corrected data. • Uses the Kenward-Rogers correction in mixed models of repeated measures. • Explicates differences between associational and causal analysis of multilevel models. • Consolidates research findings via meta-analysis and methodological critique. •Develops criteria for assessing a study's validity and zone of causality. Because of its social problems focus, clarity of exposition, and use of state-of-the-art procedures; policy researchers, methodologists, and applied statisticians in the social sciences (specifically, sociology, social psychology, political science, education, and public health) will find this book of great interest. It can be used as a primary text in courses on multilevel modeling or as a primer for more advanced texts.
