The need for guidelines for early intervention of children experiencing Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders (ADHD) was identified by the Australian Early Intervention Network (AusEinet). This document attempts to guide appropriate practice in the care of children and adolescents with ADHD. The guidelines are designed to provide information to assist decision making and are based on the best practice information available. Chapter 1 discusses the search strategies developed to retrieve articles on early intervention in ADHD including practice guidelines; cases studies; difficulties with diagnosis in pre-school; and assessment procedures. Chapter 2 considers the prevalence, diagnosis, and assessment of ADHD in preschool children. Chapter 3 looks at the evidence for treatment strategies as with parental behavior management; special classroom programs; social skills training; pharmacotherapy; and diet. Chapter 4 reviews assessments such as developmental assessment; parent-child interaction and family functioning; and functioning in other environments. Chapter 5 provides conclusions about management of ADHD in preschool children. (Contains 66 references.) (JDM)
The Australian Early Intervention Network for Mental Health in Young People (AusEinet) was established to coordinate a national approach to early intervention for mental health in young people. The approach has three streams: (1) development and maintenance of a national early intervention network for mental health in young people; (2) identification and promotion of good practices in early intervention; and (3) the reorientation of service delivery towards early intervention. This publication focuses on the reorientation stream of the project by presenting some practical models for the reorientation of service delivery to early intervention. It offers a guide to administrators and health professionals considering reorienting their own services to early intervention. Chapter 1 describes the reorientation strategies developed in each of the projects and attempts to show how reorientation was achieved in different types of agencies. Chapter 2 discusses the need for early intervention and presents an overview of the groups and individuals for whom early intervention may be most beneficial. Chapter 3 focuses on reorientation services. Chapters 4 through 12 present the model projects. Chapter 13 reviews the projects to point out commonalties and differences and considers strategies used to achieve either immediate gains or long term change. (Contains 44 references.) (JDM)
This book tackles an area of adolescent behavior that presents a significant challenge for parents, teachers and professionals the world over. Whilst much has been written on the topic of adolescent suicide we see continued high rates throughout industrialized nations. The overlap between suicidal behaviors and other forms of serious risk-taking is a relatively new avenue of research and gives insight into the motivations of some adolescents. The cognitive model developed and evaluated in this book provides further insight into the progression from early problems faced by young people to the serious outcomes of suicide and risk-taking. The model allows us to suggest points of intervention for young people and to demonstrate that whilst there are overlapping features, attempts to intervene would target different problem areas for suicidal adolescents than for risk-taking adolescents.
This literature review was undertaken as part of the National Mental Health Strategy on the development and maintenance of a national early intervention network for mental health in young people. Its purpose is to facilitate the development of innovative early intervention services across Australia by developing and maintaining a national network of mental health service providers; consumers; carers; researchers and policymakers; as well as an information clearinghouse. The review aims to critically examine the concept of early intervention for a broad audience and to explore its application in the area of mental health of young people. It seeks to provide an international review about: (1) the rationale for early intervention in mental disorder in young people; (2) the underlying conceptual framework; (3) the concept of prevention; (4) the presentation of a models of prevention; (5) research analysis; (6) an overview of evidence on effectiveness of this approach; and (7) the implications arising from the review. This project consists of three interrelated streams which aim to: (1) develop and maintain a national network of mental health service providers, and an easily accessible clearinghouse of relevant information, to facilitate the development of innovative early intervention services across Australia; (2) address challenges in reorienting service delivery in child and adolescent mental health toward an early intervention focus; and (3) promote the best practice in early intervention in priority mental disorders of children and adolescents. One of the strategies employed by the project is the conducting of a national stocktake of early intervention programs. This stocktake involves assessing the current situation by counting and valuing programs, and assessing progress and prospects. The national stocktake of early intervention programs includes identification of the population of programs to be studied by collecting information on the program type, target group, and coverage of the program. The AusEinet project team has provided some limited information to help evaluate the evidence of effectiveness provided by programs. (Contains 18 references and 5 appendixes.) (GCP)
