By 1940, immunological mechanisms had been proved to have fundamental influ ences on a great number and variety of skin reactions, and skin diseases had brought to light a great number of fundamental immunological mechanisms that were basic to a wide range of different diseases, dermatological and nondermato logical. The preeminence of dermatological research in the advancement of immu nological knowledge should not astonish anyone. For the skin is not only the most easily accessible tissue for producing and studying immunological reactions, it is also the great organ of protection that meets the first onslaughts of inimical environmental forces and agents-potential enemies, both living and dead. And protection is in essence what immunology is all about. To get an idea of the long-established role that testing the skin and the study of its many reactions has played in advancing general immunology, one need recall only smallpox vaccination; tuberculin testing; testing with fungal extracts; skin testing in hay fever, asthma, and serum sickness; skin tests with toxins and toxoids; the patch test; the passive transfer of skin-adhering antibodies (reagins); skin sensitization by simple chemicals; and similar dermatological procedures that have exerted their influence on medical and scientific disciplines far beyond dermatology.
The diagnosis of cancer in the inaccessible regions of the gastrointestinal tract is difficult at best. Neoplasia frequently advances insidiously and largely without the patient's knowledge. Ideally, simple survey tests applied periodically to those segments of the population considered most susceptible should be available. For all practical purposes such means of diagnosis are nonexistent. Those who specialize in gastro intestinal cancer must, therefore, do the best they can. The best consists of many means, all good in themselves, but often subject to failure or misinterpretation of results. Any aid which will give even a small amount of positive information to tip the balance for or against the diagnosis of cancer in an obscure situation must be considered of value to the gastroenterologist. The material presented in this volume represents our experience with such an aid over the past eight years. The use of radioactive phosphorus (P3l!) and a miniature Geiger counter to record the differences in beta emission over tumors as compared to normal tissue now appears clinically useful in the diagnosis of gastrointestinal malignancy where the organ is available for such instrumentation. An attempt has been made to present the findings as objectively and as specifically as possible so as to provide maximum assistance to other gastrointestinal oncologists as well as others who have only a general interest in the subject.

For decades retroviruses have been riding the crest of a wave of experimental research directed toward the identification of an infectious agent of human neoplastic diseases. In the early 1970s, several scientists successfully demonstrated the presence of retroviruses in numerous animal species and proved their etiological role in some related diseases. Corresponding findings in humans were somewhat discouraging. Although financial support for this line· of research declined, a few dedicated retrovirologists survived and continued to collect more biological information and technological expertise that opened a new approach to the search for a human retrovirus. The rewards came with the discovery that the genes responsible for neoplastic transformation (oncogenes) are of cellular origin and can be shuttled about by retroviruses, and with the identification of a new family of Human T-cell Lymphotrophic retroViruses (HTLV) from patients with diseases ranging from leukemia to the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). An understanding of the role and significance of retroviruses in human pathology requires basic knowledge of the major animal systems studied. With this perspective in mind, we present here a survey that includes general overviews, minireviews on each animal system studied with selected experimental reports and, finally, a stimulating review of the field of human retrovirology by many of the pioneer scientists who created it. This book covers the results of the creation of methods for ophthalmologists support in OCT images automated analysis. These methods, like the application developed on their basis, are used during routine examinations carried out in hospital. The monograph comprises proposals of new and also of known algorithms, modified by authors, for image analysis and processing, presented on the basis of example of Matlab environment with Image Processing tools. The results are not only obtained fully automatically, but also repeatable, providing doctors with quantitative information on the degree of pathology occurring in the patient. In this case the anterior and posterior eye segment is analysed, e.g. the measurement of the filtration angle or individual layers thickness. To introduce the Readers to subtleties related to the implementation of selected fragments of algorithms, the notation of some of them in the Matlab environment has been given. The presented source code is shown only in the form of example of implementable selected algorithm. In no way we impose here the method of resolution on the Reader and we only provide the confirmation of a possibility of its practical implementation.
