Reproductive Biology of Teleost Fishes is the first integrated review of the reproductive biology of the bony fishes, which are the most species-rich and diversified group of vertebrates. Teleosts display remarkable variation in their modes of reproduction, and this volume is intended to provide a framework for understanding the remarkable reproductive diversity of this group. It describes their reproductive biology using, wherever possible, phylogenetic analyses and life-history theory as a means to interpret the information. The book addresses the genetic, physiological, behavioural, ecological, evolutionary and applied aspects of teleost reproduction in a comparative framework that emphasises the adaptive basis of reproductive diversity. Reproductive Biology of Teleost Fishes provides a comprehensive synthesis of fish reproduction that will be of great interest to life scientists, particularly ecologists, evolutionary biologists, physiologists and advanced undergraduates, postgraduates and research workers requiring a comprehensive overview of fish reproduction. The book is suitable for courses in fish biology and ecology, reproductive physiology and reproductive genetics. It also addresses applied questions and will be of value for courses on fisheries science and aquaculture. Libraries in all universities and research establishments where biological sciences, fisheries science and aquaculture are studied and taught should have several copies of this important book on their shelves.
For more than fifteen years the authors have been conducting research and professional development in school districts across the United States. This work has shown that the SOAR Teaching Frames for Literacy provide a unique approach to planning, implementing, and elevating instruction that drives improvement in teaching and learning. One distinguishing aspect of the SOAR work is the focus on the high-impact teaching practices that research identifies as key to student learning. A second distinguishing aspect is that the practices are presented and unpacked within the context of teaching frames. Each teaching frame is designed to help educators understand and implement the high-impact practice that drives student learning, while simultaneously enacting a set of dynamic instructional moves in support of the high-impact practice and taking the foundational planning steps needed to do this well. Detailed instructional strategies are provided as a way to help teachers understand how to implement and continuously improve these practices. A third distinguishing aspect of the work is that the teaching frames provide a common language and a set of tools to foster teacher-to-teacher and coach-to-teacher collaboration that supports professional learning and growth across schools and districts. Principals, coaches, and teachers who have participated in SOAR professional learning report that the teaching frames provide them with a lens for continued professional learning and growth"--
This new edition of Evaluation and Treatment of Myopathies is written for the clinician who sees patients with muscle disease, or the patient with complaints of pain or weakness of muscle. Like the original, this new edition is divided in to 3 primary sections: Approach to the Patient with Muscle Disease, Specific Myopathies, and General Strategies of Clinical Management, each section providing practical guidance to eliciting key histories and demonstrate findings upon examination. This new edition also provides guidance on the next steps in diagnoses as well as the latest information on pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment, in an integrated manner, so as to give trainees, practicing clinicians and others who see neuromuscular disease perspective on how to evaluate and care for patients. New and revised tables, figures, and references are selected and organized to present information of clinical importance to provide the most up-to-date resource on the myopathies.
A broad-ranging introduction to the provision, funding and governance of health care across a variety of systems. This revised fifth edition incorporates additional material on low/middle income countries, as well as broadened coverage relating to healthcare outside of hospitals and the ever-increasing diversity of the healthcare workforce today.
Thoroughly revised to reflect new advances in the field, Savage & Aronson’s Comprehensive Textbook of Perioperative and Critical Care Echocardiography, Third Edition, remains the definitive text and reference on transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). Edited by Drs. Alina Nicoara, Robert M. Savage, Nikolaos J. Skubas, Stanton K. Shernan, and Christopher A. Troianos, this authoritative reference covers material relevant for daily clinical practice in operating rooms and procedural areas, preparation for certification examinations, use of echocardiography in the critical care setting, and advanced applications relevant to current certification and practice guidelines.
An introduction to stochastic processes through the use of R Introduction to Stochastic Processes with R is an accessible and well-balanced presentation of the theory of stochastic processes, with an emphasis on real-world applications of probability theory in the natural and social sciences. The use of simulation, by means of the popular statistical software R, makes theoretical results come alive with practical, hands-on demonstrations. Written by a highly-qualified expert in the field, the author presents numerous examples from a wide array of disciplines, which are used to illustrate concepts and highlight computational and theoretical results. Developing readers’ problem-solving skills and mathematical maturity, Introduction to Stochastic Processes with R features: More than 200 examples and 600 end-of-chapter exercises A tutorial for getting started with R, and appendices that contain review material in probability and matrix algebra Discussions of many timely and stimulating topics including Markov chain Monte Carlo, random walk on graphs, card shuffling, Black–Scholes options pricing, applications in biology and genetics, cryptography, martingales, and stochastic calculus Introductions to mathematics as needed in order to suit readers at many mathematical levels A companion web site that includes relevant data files as well as all R code and scripts used throughout the book Introduction to Stochastic Processes with R is an ideal textbook for an introductory course in stochastic processes. The book is aimed at undergraduate and beginning graduate-level students in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines. The book is also an excellent reference for applied mathematicians and statisticians who are interested in a review of the topic.
Authoritative, comprehensive and definitive, Pulmonary Circulation builds on the success of its previous two editions by providing practising respiratory physicians with a highly-ordered, unique reference work on the structure, function and pathophysiology of the pulmonary circulation. New for the third edition: Thoroughly revised with comprehensive coverage from diagnosis and clinical evaluation of pulmonary hypertension, to imaging techniques, disorders and treatment A new truly global team of expert editors, authors and key opinion leaders provide a wealth of detail on the latest developments and issues New chapters, such as: paediatrics, critical care, special environments including high altitude and underwater More quality chapters, authors, illustrations with thorough and thoughtful referencing make this book a contemporary essential reference text Pulmonary Circulation remains an essential resource for pulmonary hypertension specialists and should prove invaluable in all respiratory, cardiac and intensive care units.
Convicted sex offenders released from custody at the end of their criminal sentences pose a risk for re-offense. In many US states, Sexually Violent Predator (SVP) laws have been enacted that allow for the post-prison preventive detention of high risk sex offenders. SVP laws require the courts to make dispositions that protect the public from harm while at the same time respecting the civil rights of the offender. This book describes these SVP laws, their constitutionality, and aspects of their operation. Courts hear expert risk testimony based heavily on the results of actuarial risk assessment. Problems associated with this testimony include the lack of a theory of recidivism risk, bias due to human decision-making, and the insularity of scholarship and practice along developmental lines. The authors propose changes in legal standards, as well as a unified developmental model that treats sexual violence as an "evolving" condition, with roots traceable to childhood and paths that extend into adolescence and adulthood.
