The Facts of Prostate Cancer 2/3 of men over age 50 have low grade tumors or potential cancer cells in their prostate. Only 10% will develop clinically aggressive prostate cancer. These non-invasive exams tell if a tumor is aggressive or not with an accuracy exceeding traditional biopsy results and correlate well with prognosis according to the latest international cancer conferences. The PSA test has a poor correlation with cancer detection. The digital rectal exam is more accurate in detecting high grade tumors than the PSA level. Biopsies are random, invasive and may spread tumor cells. New non-invasive treatments are guided by advanced radiologic imaging technologies. The therapeutic effect is serially studied by MRI and 3-D sonography. While generally successful, interval exams may document an unsatisfactory response, allowing "standard" treatments to be started, if necessary, in a timely manner.

Studies of the effects of cingulate lesions in the rat have involved the production of midline cortical damage. Unfortunately, as reported in the previous chapter, the midline cortex of the rat is not comparable to the midline cortex of other animals as defined on the basis of the fibers it receives from the thalamus. In addition, lesions of the midline cortex, whether in the rat or in other species, are likely to interfere with fibers of the neural systems in or near it. These include the cingulum bundle and the supracallosal fibers of the fornix. Norepi nephrine-containing fibers also pass through this region in or near the cingulum bundle. These fibers ascend through the anterior dor solateral septal area and turn up and back to pass through the midline regions and innervate the entire medial cortex (Morrison, Molliver, & Grzanna, 1979). Lesions in this area reduce the norepinephrine distribution throughout the rostrocaudal extent of the medial cortex. A similar problem results from destruction to the anterior cortical regions. Lesions in that region could reduce the norepinephrine sup plies of the entire dorsolateral cortex.

Whether four-legged animals or two-legged humans, trails are followed and retraced by an assortment of creatures through the centuries on the easiest paths through the landscape. They were always on some type of mission whether looking for forage, food, water or ports of call. Humans, from the 16th through the 19st centuries are most always on some military or commercial enterprise between destination points. The Old Spanish Trail was used for both purposes: Spanish traders from at least 1795 to the railroad surveys of the early-1850s. Commercially, hundreds of mules left Santa Fe carrying woolen goods for the Californios. In return, thousands of horses and mules were herded back to New Mexico and then up the Santa Fe trail to Middle America. Trail of Many Tales relates the history of the trail in south central Utah by combining first hand accounts, tribal lore, works of history, archaeology and state of the art scientific methods. Come on along and learn how large groups of animals were herded by not so many men and the identification of their trails, some 1,000 feet wide, that still can be isolated on small sections of the overland route.
