Connections between time, technology, and the processes of reading and writing make clear the links between experiences of what appear to be quite different phenomena. Reading and writing have functioned together in a particular way to build the world as we have known it for three thousand years. These interacting processes have now been transformed at their core and are building a different world, one where certainties of the previous era are disappearing and being displaced by what the author sees as a chronic and pervasive mode of cognitive distraction. Robert Hassan offers a perspective permeated by a sense of history, beginning with the invention of writing and the development of the skill of reading. Nitrides are used as coatings and thin films for a wide range of applications. The study and use of nitrides in the recent decades have shifted towards ternary, quaternary or even higher order (complex) nitrides. There is an interest to use ternary and quaternary nitrides for machining and thermoelectric materials, because it gives the possibility to choose composition and thereby design the materials properties. This thesis presents research results on TiAlN and and TiAlN-based coatings that are used as hard coatings for machining and on ternary scandium nitrides that are of interest for thin films for thermoelectric applications. The high-pressure high-temperature behavior of cubic TiAlN deposited on cubic boron nitride has been experimentally studied. It has been shown that the spinodal decomposition, which means decomposition into cubic domains enriched in TiN and AlN, is delayed as a result of high pressure compared to ambient pressure. No chemical interaction between coating and substrate occurs. TiZrAlN has been theoretically and experimentally studied at high temperature. The results show that the when Zr-content is decreased and the Al-content is increased the decomposition route changes from nucleation and growth to spinodal decomposition. The microstructure evolution with temperature depends on the initial composition. In the case where the decompositon starts with only spinodal decomposition the microstructure at 1100 °C consists of domains that are larger than in the case where the decomposition occurs by nucleation and growth. ScMN2 (M=V, Nb, Ta) phases have been experimentally demonstrated for M=Nb and Ta in a few studies, but have not been much investigated. In this theseis, their crystal structure, stability, elastic properties, electronic structure and thermoelectric properties have been studied. At 0 K and 0 GPa it has been shown that these three phases are thermodynamically and elastically stable. Additionally, these are narrow-bandgap semiconductors and their thermoelectric properties can be tuned by doping. Pressure has a stabilizing effect on these structures. When pressure increases from 0-150 GPa the elastic constants and moduli increases in the range 53-317 %.

This book offers a comprehensive overview of contemporary issues of regional development. It places particular emphasis on its socio-economic and socio-political determinants which accompany the problem of existing and ever-widening differences in the level of regional development in various parts of Europe. In order to diagnose the scale of those differences and to indicate the main forces behind the divergence of development, the authors propose an original systematisation of regional development factors, drawing attention to the need to consider them within the framework of present-day socio-economic megatrends. The proposed approach to the development factors is also used for the author's operationalisation of the concept of territorial capital, which is at the centre of regional place-based policy. The wide spatial aspect of the analysis (national and local) and its extensive temporal scope (2004-2019) yields unique results and creates an important element of added value for this book, which shows the regularities of the process of regional development in Europe at three spatial levels - pan-European, national and intra-regional. Furthermore, it indicates the challenges faced by regionalists who attempt to carry out research on different territorial levels with a diverse number of units (205 EU regions, 16 Polish voivodeships, 2,478 Polish local units) and extended observation periods (2004-2017). The solutions proposed by the authors, who show the potential of overcoming the barriers resulting from limited access to complete and comparable statistical data series, should be inspiring for many researchers. The purpose of this book is to help secondary school principals and college faculty fulfill their key role for continuous improvement planning of educational practices and safety at their institution. Rapid social and technological advances have motivated the consideration of student voice in schools across the United States. By merging student voice and educator expertise, an intergenerational perspective can emerge that more accurately portrays the strengths and limitations of a school. Strom and Strom began their research on student voice by partnering with adolescents and principals from several schools to identify topics they saw as appropriate for polling to improve schools. This effort led to the development of ten polls on school stress, career exploration, time management, attention and distraction, tutoring, peer support, school cheating, frustration, cyberbullying, and Internet learning. Every poll contains 15 to 20 multiple-choice items. The process model for polling includes a step-by-step procedure that educational leaders can use to plan and implement school improvement. Different methods of data analysis and ways to report overall evidence-based school results are presented by age, gender, grade and ethnicity. Student polling is distinctive from other assessment strategies because the target for data gathering is a single school, without comparison to other schools. This narrow base to assess student voice ensures poll results are anonymous and have local relevance to guide stakeholder responses. The results of polling can provide data-based evidence that can be used for continuous education improvement planning. An additional benefit is to separately assess students in special education, gifted and talented programs, and second language acquisition learners.
