To measure the impact of a minister's preaching, one must first examine the societal context in which the ministry took place. For example, what would lead a minister of the Gospel to roar from the pulpit, as did Joseph Parker of City Temple, London, "God damn the Sultan!" The first section of The Golden Age of Preaching is given to the study of the times in which nine prominent British preachers ministered. Understanding the times helps one to comprehend why crowds flocked to hear these men preach, and why their sermons were printed in newspapers on Monday. Furthermore, to assess the preaching of a man, one needs to take into account the life and manner of the man himself. The Men Who Moved the Masses includes biographical sketches of nine selected preachers: Alexander McLaren, Robert William Dale, Henry Parry Liddon at St. Paul's London, Joseph Parker, Charles Haddon Spurgeon, Alexander Whyte, Frederick Brotherton Meyer, John Henry Jowett, and George Campbell Morgan. These were men, though hampered by various medical problems and personality shortcomings, who led thousands to faith in their day. The final section attempts to answer the question, "Why?" by identifying those homiletical characteristics of their preaching which they had in common, resulting in such uncommon impact upon the masses. Those qualities are not confined to their era alone. They are perpetual, applicable to any age, to any culture. Preachers and seminarians who dare to sit at the feet and learn from these preaching giants of the past will find their own preaching power lifted onto a new plain to the benefit of all who hear them.
Robert Henry Wright, Jr., a resident of the Idaho Panhandle since 1988, has published Ten Percent Marriage, a second novel set in the Sandpoint, Idaho, area. Wright categorizes Ten Percent Marriage as a love story, an action story, and as personal relations in an outdoor setting. To escape the horror of a sadistic sexual assault that had left her with an illegitimate child and a shattered life before that life could begin, Emily has been living in a cabin at Arrowhead Point beside Lake Pend dOreille in northern Idaho. She had exiled herself there thirty years ago at age seventeen. Harvey considers himself to be one of Gods chosen losers, as he had lost at everything he had truly wanted to win: the state high school football championship; his son; and his wife. The final blow was having been presented with an early retirement package and shown to the door. Aimless and defeated, he goes to see a piece of land he had won in a bour game years before; the land is located at Arrowhead Point beside Lake Pend dOreille in northern Idaho. Emily and Harvey meet; they clash; they become attracted to each other; but there are obstacles to overcome. Harvey discovers that there are two Emilys: Ewn and Et. Ewn is the dominant personality, a passionate artist who has a well developed phobia of males. Et is fun loving, flirtatious, reckless, and has a mania for males. Amber, Bev, Chantel, Jazmyne, Faith, and Jorgina are six Indigenous women previously involved in street gangs or the street lifestyle in Saskatoon, Regina, and Calgary. In collaboration with Indigenous Studies scholar Robert Henry (Métis), they share their stories using photovoice, an emancipatory research process where participants are understood to be the experts of their own experiences. Each photograph in Indigenous Women and Street Gangs was selected and placed in order to show how the authors have changed with their experiences. Following their photographs, the authors each share a narrative that begins with their earliest memory and continues to the present. Together the photographs and narratives bring a deeper meaning to the women's lived realities. Throughout, these women show us the meaning of survivance, a process of resistance, resurgence, and growth. While often difficult to read, the narratives shared by Amber, Bev, Chantel, Jazmyne, Faith, and Jorgina are direct, explicit, sensitive, and imbued with hope and humour. They provide unparalleled insight into the lives of these women and break all kinds of stereotypes along the way."--
Created in the early 20th century to provide scientific management of the nation's forests, the U.S. Forest Service was, for many years, regarded as a model agency in the federal government. The author contends that this reputation is undeserved and the Forest Service's performance today is unacceptable. Not only has scientific management proven impossible in practice, it is also objectionable in principle. Furthermore, the author argues that the Forest Service lacks a coherent vision and prefers to sponsor only fashionable environmental solutions--most recently ecosystem management. Describing its history and failures, the author advocates replacing the service with a decentralized system to manage the protection of national forests.
