The crucifixion of Christ has been richly portrayed by countless artists for hundreds of years, but it was European Renaissance styles and painters such as Kurz, Benjamin West and John Valentine Haidt that first informed American artists of the possibilities for depicting the crucifixion. This work features artists living and working in America from the mid-18th to the 21st century who depicted the crucifixion of Christ in their artwork. The 19th century saw painters like Julian Russell Story, John Singer Sargent, Vassili Verestchagin and Fred Holland break from the Renaissance tradition of the 18th century to begin a religious art revolution. The 20th century saw painters like Thomas Eakins and George Bellows continuing the traditions of the 19th until the Realist style became dominant, which lasted until the latter part of the century and the rise of Abstract Expressionism and a number of experimental styles such as Op, Pop, and Super-realism.
The portrait is one of the most pure collaborative efforts in the art world. The artist is the creator, but she or he is wholly dependent on the sitter for inspiration and stimulus. When the subject is famous, the artist must often compromise true expression for the vanity of the person being painted. Though that would seemingly make the portrait less appealing artistically, in truth the collaborative nature of the portrait often makes it artistically unique, a blending of the artist's style with the desires of the sitter. This work takes a fresh look at the portraits of 13 American women (Marian Anderson, Clara Barton, Mary McLeod Bethune, Pearl Buck, Mary Cassatt, Isadora Duncan, Marianne Moore, Georgia O'Keeffe, Eleanor Roosevelt, Gertrude Stein, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Harriet Tubman and Martha Washington) and the artists who created them. In examining the work of such artists as Abraham Walkowitz, John Graham, Betsy Graves Reyneau, Michael Alexander Werboff, and Brenda Putnam, one comes to see the unique combination of the personality of the sitter and the style of the artist.
Almost every medical faculty possesses anatomical and/or pathological collections: human and animal preparations, wax- and other models, as well as drawings, photographs, documents and archives relating to them. In many institutions these collections are well-preserved, but in others they are poorly maintained and rendered inaccessible to medical and other audiences. This volume explores the changing status of anatomical collections from the early modern period to date. It is argued that anatomical and pathological collections are medically relevant not only for future generations of medical faculty and future research, but they are also important in the history of medicine, the history of the institutions to which they belong, and to the wider understanding of the cultural history of the body. Having received the invitation from Springer-Verlag to produce a volume on drug-induced birth defects for the Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology, we asked ourselves what new approach could we offer that would capture the state of the science and bring a new synthesis of the information on this topic to the world's literature. We chose a three-pronged approach, centered around those particular drugs for which we have a relatively well established basis for understanding how they exert their unwanted effects on the human embryo. We then supplemented this information with a series of reviews of critical biological processes involved in the established normal developmental patterns, with emphasis on what happens to the embryo when the processes are perturbed by experimental means. Knowing that the search for mechanisms in teratology has often been inhibited by the lack of understanding of how normal development proceeds, we also included chapters describing the amazing new discoveries related to the molecular control of normal morphogenesis for several organ systems in the hope that the experimental toxicologists and molecular biologists will begin to better appreciate each others questions and progress. Several times during the last two years of developing outlines, issuing invitations, reviewing chapters, and cajoling belated contributors, we have wondered whether we made the correct decision to undertake this effort.
What is it about ruins that are so alluring, so puzzling, that they can hold some of us in endless wonder over the half-erased story they tell? Robert Scholten is Emeritus Professor of Geology at The Pennsylvania State University. Born in the Netherlands, he studied at the University of Amsterdam during World War II and was arrested for Resistance activities. Arriving in America in 1946, he obtained his PhD at the University of Michigan. Since his retirement in l985, he divides his time between France and the U.S. Scholten?s translations of Baudelaire?s Les Fleurs du Mal and Rimbaud?s The Drunken Boat, were published by Xlibris in 2011 and 2012.
